    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Nine Eagles - Youth Campground

Nine Eagles is near Lamoni, Iowa near the Iowa-Missouri border right off of Interstate 35. I camped here with my son and his Boy Scout troop in the youth group part of the campground. I can't speak for the rest of the park's camping facilities, but the youth group site is a large open space surrounded by tall trees. The grass is well maintained and the campsite is clean and beautiful. There are not any bathroom facilities at the campsite which is why I give it four instead of five stars, but the park is beautiful and a peaceful place to camp. I wish I would have had my camera with me to take some pictures to share.

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Nicely shaded spots.

We stayed for two days in spot #92. Many of the spots have a good amount of room, but there are some that looked tricky to level. 92 was fine for leveling. The only downside is that the spots, while larger, are fairly open (in the area around 92). I prefer a spot that has a tucked away fire pit and table, but this worked OK for us. Bathhouses were clean and there is a great 3.75 mile paved loop around the lake if you have dogs that enjoy long walks.

    Pony Express Lake Conservation Area

Great spot on the west side of the lake

We drove by the east side campsite and it was packed. We ran into a local and he told us about a spot on the east side of the lake. An old boy scout camp. It wasn’t maintained but there was nobody there. Our dogs ran free and that was what we were looking for. We ran our generator at night because we had no neighbors. We were a mile from the lake so we drove around and had access to the lake.

    Hamilton City Lake

Peaceful, Shady, and Right on the Water – Great Free Spot!

We stayed at Hamilton City Lake in early summer and really enjoyed the peaceful, low-key atmosphere. There are two known dispersed sites, and while they’re basic, they’re free and offer a great natural setting. We had plenty of room to spread out without worrying about noisy neighbors—it wasn’t crowded at all, and we were the only campers overnight.

The site is shaded with lots of trees, which helped keep things cool, and it’s right next to the lake. We were able to fish right from our spot and caught some bluegill and a big crappie. Another visitor reeled in a bass. We also saw several turtles swimming around, which was a nice bonus.

A few things to note: there’s only one picnic table, and the site is fairly close to Highway 36, so you can hear some road noise. Still, the tranquility of the spot overall and the lack of campground crowding more than made up for it.

Highly recommend if you’re looking for a quiet, simple place to camp with great access to fishing.

    Wallace State Park Campground

    Wooded Hosted Campground

Best value on a trip across country. Not far off of RT 36 going East through Missouri. Cost only $13 with hot showers. Nice campsite with table and fire pit. The night of our stay the ranger did a naturalist talk about stream life. Host was very nice and we were able to pay with a debit card. The Missouri State park system is automated and accepts credit cards.

    Greatest hot dog roast ever

    Pershing State Park Campground

    Surprising

Pershing SP was a surprise to us. While the campground was small, (39 sites) the park packs a punch. There features a wet land prairie that offers a diverse scene that you would not expect in Missouri. The park has a dated shower house, playground for the kids, a several little lakes that you can fish in. The hiking is fantastic and I would recommend the boardwalk trail to experience what this park is all about.

Guide to Jamesport

Countryside RV Park welcomes pets from April to October at its Jamesport location, part of several pet-friendly camping options within driving distance of the small Missouri town. The park provides electric hookups, sewer connections, and water hookups for RV campers bringing their dogs. Nearby, Dockery Park in Gallatin offers free camping with both water and electric at sites overlooking a pond, where campers can bring pets without paying a nightly fee. The bathrooms are well-maintained, though campers note the RV spots are visible from the rest of the park rather than sheltered. Both Country Charm RV Park in Hamilton and Crowder State Park in Trenton maintain strict cleanliness standards while accommodating pets, with the latter featuring shaded sites and clean shower facilities.

Hiking trails at Crowder State Park provide pet exercise opportunities on 1,900 acres of wooded terrain, though dogs must remain leashed at all times. The 18-acre lake offers limited water access, with some campers noting it resembles a large pond rather than a true lake. Most campgrounds in the region enforce typical pet policies including leash requirements, waste cleanup, and quiet hours to prevent excessive barking. Honey Grove Campground receives excellent ratings from visitors and accommodates pets at its tent sites with fire rings for evening relaxation. Pony Express Lake Conservation Area provides a free alternative for budget-conscious pet owners, featuring basic amenities including picnic tables and vault toilets but no hookups.
