    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Nine Eagles - Youth Campground

Nine Eagles is near Lamoni, Iowa near the Iowa-Missouri border right off of Interstate 35. I camped here with my son and his Boy Scout troop in the youth group part of the campground. I can't speak for the rest of the park's camping facilities, but the youth group site is a large open space surrounded by tall trees. The grass is well maintained and the campsite is clean and beautiful. There are not any bathroom facilities at the campsite which is why I give it four instead of five stars, but the park is beautiful and a peaceful place to camp. I wish I would have had my camera with me to take some pictures to share.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Overall nice park

Nice park, a little run down, but there's a new park ranger in town who is trying to fix it up. New rental cabin almost finished, clean beach, boat ramp and fishing. Clean spacious bathrooms, nice playground for the kids and a really cool equestrian section. No store, no wood so get what you need before you get here.

    Wooded Hosted Campground

Best value on a trip across country. Not far off of RT 36 going East through Missouri. Cost only $13 with hot showers. Nice campsite with table and fire pit. The night of our stay the ranger did a naturalist talk about stream life. Host was very nice and we were able to pay with a debit card. The Missouri State park system is automated and accepts credit cards.

    Wallace State Park Campground

    Rain camping

We came here fully expecting rain and we got it. Only problem was we planned to tie up some tarps to sit under but we didn't know that it was against the rules to tie to the trees at these sites. luckily we made it work tieing to the roof of the table and a stump. As far as the camp ground its self, rules aside, it is amazing. All the tent sites are separated by trees and bushes so you get plenty of room to your self but they are close enough you can still connect with other groups if you want. Another great part about it is that there are walking paths through the woods from each site that meet up at a central restroom. The main bathrooms and showers are over by the office and are super nice but it is good that there are a couple stalls close for the middle of the night situations. Tons of walking trails are around and a decent playground for the kids as well. Overall loved this place.

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Fantastic area close to KC

Watkins mill SP is located a short distance from Kansas City off I-35 near Kearney. The park has a large lake that you can fish and boat as well as multiple hiking options. The historical site is a neat step back in time to the 1800'. The campground is broken up into 3 different areas with plenty of space for campers, RV's and tents. Park features include an updated showerhouse, large playground for the kids and helpful and friendly park staff. Thanks to the staff for giving us an heads up on the raccoons that are bold! Reservations are recommended on holiday weekends.

    Nicely shaded spots.

We stayed for two days in spot #92. Many of the spots have a good amount of room, but there are some that looked tricky to level. 92 was fine for leveling. The only downside is that the spots, while larger, are fairly open (in the area around 92). I prefer a spot that has a tucked away fire pit and table, but this worked OK for us. Bathhouses were clean and there is a great 3.75 mile paved loop around the lake if you have dogs that enjoy long walks.

Guide to Jamesport

Jamesport, Missouri sits in rural Daviess County, with surrounding terrain characterized by gentle hills and flat river valleys between 900-1,100 feet elevation. Seasonal temperature fluctuations significantly impact camping conditions, with summer highs regularly reaching 90°F while winter overnight temperatures often drop below freezing. Nearby conservation areas provide primitive camping with limited amenities compared to established state parks.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Nine Eagles State Park offers a quiet lake environment for anglers seeking bass and panfish. "The campsite is clean and beautiful. There are not any bathroom facilities at the campsite which is why I give it four instead of five stars, but the park is beautiful and a peaceful place to camp," notes Matt S. about the youth camping area.

Trail exploration: Wallace State Park provides varied hiking options through wooded terrain. "The trails around Wallace are fantastic. From a casual stroll around the lake to a more vigorous hike up the hill this park provides it all," explains Chad K., who recommends planning ahead as "this park fills up quickly on the weekends."

Historical attractions: Watkins Mill State Park combines camping with educational opportunities. "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," recommends Josh P., who appreciates that despite being close to urban areas, the park maintains a natural setting.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Wallace State Park maintains exceptional sanitation standards. "Sparkling clean showers and lovely grounds," reports Kevin S., who appreciated being able to switch campsites to find a more level location that "abutted woods" for increased privacy.

Private camping spaces: Many campers value the secluded feeling at Wallace State Park sites. "I love how many of the basic sites are secluded or at least mostly separate from other sites. Many have treeline surrounding so your site is closed off from others, ensuring some privacy," writes Erin P., who also enjoys "the lake and nature trails."

No-frills environment: Bonanza Conservation Area provides free camping without amenities. "Multiple campsites available along the highway, but the marked site is one of the best, right by a great fishing lake. Very quite, no amenities," explains Lloyd W., who rediscovered this location after visiting during childhood.

What you should know

Camping restrictions: When seeking horse campgrounds near Jamesport, Missouri, understand that Bonanza Conservation Area has specific rules about where camping is permitted. "It is against their rules to camp anywhere but on a gravelly parking lot. We camped just off the road and got a citation. It's not really disbursed camping," cautions Kevin C.

Water availability varies: Seasonal changes affect water access at some campgrounds. At Nine Eagles State Park, Uhura G. discovered: "We opted to pay the extra money for an electric site - based solely on the fact that the water wasn't turned on in the basic site loop (we later discovered it was also off at the swimming beach)."

Supply limitations: Come prepared when visiting more remote camping areas. At Nine Eagles State Park, Lauri C. advises: "No store, no wood so get what you need before you get here," while noting the park is "a little run down, but there's a new park ranger in town who is trying to fix it up."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Wallace State Park offers recreational options for children beyond natural attractions. "The shower house is new and they have a updated playground for the kids," mentions Chad K., making this location suitable for families seeking both outdoor adventure and structured play areas.

Quieter weekday visits: For families preferring less crowded experiences near Jamesport equestrian campgrounds, consider weekday scheduling. At Nine Eagles State Park, Uhura G. observed: "Though it was definitely busier come Friday night not all the sites were full and most seemed to be retired or semi-so with grandkids. No party atmosphere."
