      Neshoba County Lake

      Questionable

Can anyone tell me about the primitive camping? My husband and children are planning a camping trip for this weekend over Mother’s Day, we are new to the neshoba county area. I see that fishing has great reviews, but what other amenities are there? Are pets allowed (on leash of course), kids friendly?

      BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

We stayed for 2 nights in site 83, which is on the lake. Kayaking, boating, swimming, and fishing! Beautiful grounds, nice level site. Some sites weren't as pretty. This one has a view of the lake, very spacious site, and lots of shade trees. I don't recommend the bath house, too many spiders!!! Cabins available, but they didn't appear to be in the best of condition. No store. Pets are welcome.

Thanks dyrt for pointing us here. For 30$ a night u get a level gravel drive thru spot electric, sewer, water, and wifi, laundry facilities and bath house very very clean. Very quiet all thru the day and night. Friendly people all round. 5 min to walmart, tractor supply, and many restaurants and gas stations. Spacious lots so you arent right up on each other. Theres rental lots and cabins by the night, week and month. Theres saved spaces for those who just want a pulling over night. Theres big rigs here and small ones. Vintage and brand new. These are friendly people you can sit a chair or 2 outside and not have someone pounding on your door at 7am yelling about a toy or a chair left out all night. This is our face in canton so far. Lovely place with country atmosphere. Pet friendly and spacious. All u need is right here. Thank you ms. Kay and staff.

      LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground

      Beautiful but noisy

This park is literally in the middle of Jackson, Mississippi in a beautiful setting. The lake was lovely and we saw herons, cranes, turtles and deer. The sites are right on the lake and the shower house was convenient and clean. It’s also secure; you have to have a code to enter and exit the park. The only problem was the sounds of the city. We heard sirens all night (it was Halloween night) and there is a recycling plant nearby and the sounds of crushing metal were really loud until about 11. In our tents we had to resort to earplugs. Great location. Picnic tables and fire rings.

      Marathon Lake Campground

      Great for an overnight

This campground is great for an overnight or quick weekend trip. My boyfriend and I brought the dogs and had a great campground spot on the lake. There is a short walking path around the lake, which was relaxing. We were able to swim in the designated area as well. Not much more to do, so it's great for a quick trip.

    Guide to Thomastown

Thomastown camping areas sit within Mississippi's central region at approximately 400 feet elevation, characterized by rolling hills and pine forests intersected by the Pearl River watershed. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, while winters remain mild with occasional freezing temperatures. Most campgrounds in this area feature shade trees that provide natural cooling during the warmer months.

    What to do

Fishing on Pearl River: Coal Bluff Park offers excellent fishing access with a boat ramp directly behind the campground. "The river and sand bar are literally right behind the CG," notes one camper at Coal Bluff Campground. Anglers catch bass, catfish, and perch throughout the year.

Disc golf courses: Several parks near Thomastown maintain disc golf courses for campers seeking recreational activities. At Timberlake Campground, one visitor appreciated this amenity: "Disc golf course was a huge plus since I love disc golf."

Water recreation: Roosevelt State Park provides diverse water activities beyond just fishing. "Hiking, boating, pool, water slides," reports one camper about the available options. The park maintains a swimming area separate from the boat launch for safety.

Nature trails: Multiple campgrounds offer hiking paths through native Mississippi woodlands. "There are trails close by that were nice to walk on," mentions a Roosevelt camper. Most trails are rated easy to moderate and suitable for all skill levels.

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds provide well-separated sites with ample room for setup. "The sites are spacious and level. Has easy access to the Pearl River and Ross Barnett Reservoir," notes a visitor at Goshen Springs Campground.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathhouses and common areas. "The bathhouse is up on stilts/pillings it was clean and made of logs," reports a visitor at LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground. Many campgrounds also provide laundry facilities.

Wildlife viewing: The natural setting allows for wildlife observation opportunities. "Had my morning coffee and watched a 7ft gator swimming and paying us no mind. Most amazing thing I've seen," shares a LeFleur's Bluff camper. Bird watching is also popular in spring and fall.

Dog friendly environment: Several campgrounds near Thomastown welcome pets with designated areas. "Pet friendly and spacious," notes a visitor at Movietown RV Park, one of many dog friendly campgrounds near Thomastown that accommodate four-legged companions.

    What you should know

Summer heat considerations: Mississippi summers bring intense heat and humidity. "During summer months, early morning walks are recommended to avoid heat stress on pets," advises a park ranger. Campgrounds with water access provide cooling opportunities.

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds near Thomastown require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. "You can just roll in, find a spot and let the office know you're there, or better yet, reserve a spot and make sure there is room for you," explains a Timberlake camper.

Varying site conditions: Site quality can differ within the same campground. "The concrete pads were badly broken & uneven, garbage littered the whole area," warns one Timberlake visitor about certain sections, while others report excellent conditions in different areas.
