Swimming, fishing, and lakeside sites draw campers to Choctaw Lake, a US Forest Service campground set within Tombigbee National Forest outside Ackerman, Mississippi. Most sites sit directly on the water, and several reviewers single out sites 3 through 12 as the spots closest to the lake. The campground runs from early March through late November, with nightly rates ranging from $20 to $40.

Tree cover is lighter here than at many forest campgrounds, which means less shade but also more breeze and fewer insects than campers sometimes expect. A small beach area gives swimmers a designated entry point, and a boat dock serves those who bring their own watercraft. Anglers should note that fishing from shore tends to be slow. As Maddox H. puts it, "fishing is quite slow/inactive unless you're on a boat, rather over fished." Cell signal is limited regardless of carrier, so plan accordingly before arrival.

Full hookups, including electric, water, and sewer, are available at each site, with a maximum RV length of 55 feet. A dump station sits at the entrance. Reviewers consistently note clean bathhouses with showers. Tent campers should be aware that tent pads are rocky rather than grassy, which is worth factoring in when packing. Those looking at camping near Tombigbee National Forest will find this one of the more amenity-rich options in the area. Reservations are available and worth making for lakeside sites, especially on summer weekends.

Guests frequently mentioned the lakefront sites, clean facilities, and family amenities like the playground and beach. Some concerns about limited tree cover and close site spacing, but most found it well-maintained for RV camping.

Great spots by the water, although quite humid on hotter days, camp neighbors are welcoming and the camp host is a charm

Stayed a night and the next day up until two o’clock, (you’re required to check out &pack up before 2pm on leave day) the stay was great, campsite occupants were nice and even gave me and my lady fire starters when we forgot fluid for our coals when we planned on grilling LOL.. we stayed on site 8, it was a nice spot by the back end lake and its quite nice during the day. Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you’re equipped for it i’d say this spot is great for beginners or family trips. Fishing is quite slow/inactive unless you’re on a boat, rather over fished.

Dump Station!

This is a great place to dump your tanks. Only one problem and we expect it to be resolved soon. The charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay! The sign claims you can pay in the park, the dump is outside the park, at the entrance or exit. Afterwards we continued to “in the park” to pay with our 53’ rig with car in tow. We looked for a place to pay we gave up and had to try to turn around running over the curb with Motorhome and car we thought we should just mail the fee. A BOX AT THE DUMP STATION SEAM TO BE A SIMPLE FIX.

Beautiful

This campground was amazing. Our site was right off the lake. The scenery was beautiful, it was quiet, the sites are pretty spread out. Camp sites 3-12 is where you want to be. There is a playground for kids, a boat dock if you have one, or you can just fish right off your site. The camp host was a very helpful and sweet man. We loved this campground and will definitely be back.

Quiet and peaceful

Sites 5 and 8 are our favorite. Really, any site on the small lake is great. Those are the smaller number spots. Almost always one available. Large hands in the smaller lake. I haven't even had a bite in the larger lake. This is our local campground and we go a few times a year. No WiFi and very little cell signal, as camping should be. We love it.

Made for RVs

If you get a spot on the lake it is definitely worth it but it is more like an RV resort not really made for tent camping. Very well maintained, excellent for fishing. Hardly any cell signal with ATT but better than nothing.

Not for Tent Camping

Pros: Very nice campground. Clean bath houses with showers, beautiful lake with a small beach. Access to mountain bike trails. Verizon cell reception for those going completely out of touch.

No's: Campsites are on top of each other with very little tree cover. Also, tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their "tent pads." (jagged rocks). I asked the camp host if any sites had actual tent pads instead of rocks and was told no.

National Forest lakeside camping

Nice cozy campground on the lake. The campsites are almost all right next to the water, but there isn’t too much tree cover despite very large campsites. This may help a little with increasing breeze since we didn’t have as many bugs as we expected. Yay: Nice little beach for swimming, boating and fishing. All quite clean, water and power at each campsite, great showers. Simple but all you could want.

**Nay: Nice hiking trails around the lake, and other great trails nearby.  **

Surprise:  Saw eagles and some cute little red birds we couldn’t identify :) There is a disc golf course nearby (but we don’t play).
