Campers exploring the Clinton area will find a mix of RV parks and state-managed campgrounds within a 30-mile radius. Clinton sits at approximately 358 feet above sea level in central Mississippi, with camping options spanning from the Pearl River basin to Ross Barnett Reservoir. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons.
What to do
Wildlife viewing at lakes and ponds: LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities where campers can spot native species. "We just stayed overnight but it was very nice. Easily accessible from highway but felt like we were not in the middle of the city. Went for a nice walk this morning and saw a gator," reports Courtney B. from LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground.
Water recreation on Ross Barnett Reservoir: Timberlake Campground offers direct lake access for boating and fishing. "We have camped the last 2 years for the local half Ironman race (Deep South Triathlon) and it's more than just convenient, it's perfect for what we want. This campground is right on the reservoir," notes J K. from Timberlake Campground.
Disc golf courses near camping areas: Roosevelt State Park features multiple outdoor activities beyond standard camping. "Lot's to do here. Hiking, boating, pool, water slides," shares Jason R., highlighting the diverse recreational options at the park.
What campers like
Spacious waterfront sites: Many campers appreciate the lake views and generous spacing at Wendy Oaks. "We stayed in spot #1 and had a beautiful view of the lake, nice fire pit and picnic table. Our kids and babies loved feeding the ducks and walking around the lake," writes Whitney S. from Wendy Oaks RV Resort.
Quiet natural settings minutes from urban areas: Despite being near Jackson, several campgrounds maintain peaceful environments. "This MS state park is smack dab in the middle of Jackson, MS. It is snuggled in the woods along a river. The bathrooms and sites were clean. Every site has a beautiful view," explains Leslie E. about LeFleur's Bluff State Park Campground.
Access to walking trails: Askew's Landing provides natural areas for daily walks. "We took a drive thru the park and stopped and spoke with some guests who just happened to find the park due to its close proximity to I20. They were eager to discuss how well they were enjoying their visit. Even tho closely situated to a busy interstate, the noise is non-existent at the park," notes Hollie C.
What you should know
Summer heat and insects: Mississippi summers require preparation for high temperatures and bugs. "There are gnats...and more gnats...and more gnats so be prepared for that. We got to see alligators and a beaver though while there," warns Kelli S. about her experience at LeFleur's Bluff.
Bathhouse conditions vary significantly: Facilities range from excellent to problematic across area campgrounds. "This campground looked wonderful on the surface. Parts of it is very well cared for & maintained, but a large area needs serious attention," cautions Joy R. about Timberlake Campground.
Late arrival protocols: Many campgrounds accommodate after-hours check-ins with specific procedures. "We got in late so we registered at the closed office door by putting our $27 payment in an envelope in the door slot. How convenient! Close to Hwy 55, clean and quiet," shares John N. about Movietown RV Park.
Tips for camping with families
Dog-friendly campgrounds near Clinton: Askew's Landing RV Campground welcomes pets with dedicated areas for exercise. "On site, there are 2 dog parks for your furry friends to run free, a full service laundry, 2 bathhouses, a swimming pool, a large open grassy area for anything your heart can imagine," explains Hollie C. from Askew's Landing RV Campground.
Proximity to museums and educational sites: Some campgrounds offer educational opportunities nearby. "The trails are lovely, easy walks through cypress swamps and dry forest. One way the trail leads to a dam with old structures and great fishing opportunities, the other fork leads you to the museum of natural science! My children loved that!" shares Leslie E. about LeFleur's Bluff.
Pet-friendly hiking trails: Several area parks allow leashed pets on designated paths. "There's a nature trail on site. Two boat ramps one gives access to Pearl River. Campground located next to Mississippi Museum of Natural History, a Children's Museum, Ag Museum and a golf course too. Great location to explore Jackson MS," reports Janet H.
Tips from RVers
Site selection for level parking: Choosing the right site can prevent leveling issues. "The site we had was right next to the lake which had an active fish population, two gators, and several kayaks. The bathhouse is up on stilts/pillings it was clean and made of logs. the electric service looked new and the water pressure was good," shares Nick W. from Roosevelt State Park Campground.
Navigation challenges for night arrivals: Some campgrounds have complex layouts that can be difficult in darkness. "Pretty difficult to navigate at night since the layout is atypical. RVs are mixed with mobile homes and you just pick a spot if you are late arrival," warns Lisa E. about Springridge Mobile Estates & RV Park.
Proximity to services: Many area campgrounds offer convenient access to necessities. "This is just off of I-20. RV Parking lot in the middle of a quiet mobile home park. Easy access. Full hookups. Stores and restaurants nearby," notes Deborah about Springridge Mobile Estates.
