Seasonal winter camping: Unlike many Michigan campgrounds, several sites remain open year-round. "Had the pleasure of visiting first weekend in February, on the coldest weekend of the year! Privacy levels vary significantly: Some campgrounds offer more secluded sites than others. "This campground was what we needed for squirrel hunting, however, it is very open and not very private. It is another one of those 'parking lot campgrounds' where you can see all of your neighbors at all times," noted a camper at Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.
Clean facilities despite rustic settings: Even basic campgrounds maintain good standards. "The sites are generously sized, with room to stretch out. The vault toilets were about as clean & tidy as you can ask a vault to be. Generously sized buildings that seemed regularly checked on. Hand sanitizer pumps were installed and full, and toilet paper was always available," reported a Green Lake visitor.
Variable shade coverage: Tree density differs between camping areas. "We stayed during very hot weather at the beginning of July 2020. Our site backed up to trees and I can't recall seeing our neighbors to the left or right. Because we didn't get any shade from the nearby trees we had to run the ac," explained a camper at Sleepy Hollow State Park.

Bug preparation is essential: Mosquitoes can be particularly intense in certain areas. "The camping area sits on an inaccessible lake with a marsh area. When we rolled in the first thing we noticed was that everyone had screen houses set up. We didn't have anything but our tent and a hammock with a big net so everyone got bitten up while cooking and hanging out by the fire," warned a visitor to Brighton Recreation Area.
Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds require advance planning while others allow more flexibility. "I would recommend getting a reservation before showing up. They have laminated signs posted on the campsites to let you know which ones are taken. When I showed up I found site 13 open for only one night," advised a Green Lake camper.
Electrical access challenges: Power connections aren't always conveniently located. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension," noted a Sleepy Hollow visitor.
Site levelness differs: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds and specific sites. "Our site wasn't level, so we were rolling around a bit. If I went there again I'd try to find a spot towards the end of the loop by the exit. These sites were higher and some of them were private," shared a Brighton Recreation Area camper.
Tips for Camping with Families
Beach and swimming access: Several locations offer family-friendly water activities. "We spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the the playground," reported a visitor to Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.
Playground availability: Many campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "Nice campground. Bathroom facilities could use some updating. Rangers are great. Nice lake to kayak in," noted a Bruin Lake visitor about the recreational facilities.
Consider site locations carefully: Some family-specific areas provide better experiences. "Nice flat campsites near the beach area. It has a very nice play area for the children and clean bathrooms. The boat launch was near our camp site which was nice not having to leave the campground," shared a camper at Hell Creek Ranch.
Seasonal activities: Special events occur throughout camping season. "We have been to this campground twice now. The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms," reported a visitor to Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.

Site size considerations: Not all areas accommodate larger vehicles. "Nice beach but super busy on the weekend. Site was a little small for our 38foot - we had to go sideways which opened us up to other campers," warned a visitor with a larger RV.
Access road conditions: Some campground entry points present challenges. "First of all, if it's rainy or muddy, you might want to think twice about entering the rustic camping area. We have a 4Runner, so it was no problem but a few little cars did slide around and have trouble on the hill by our site," cautioned a Brighton Recreation Area visitor.
