    Thousand Trails Bear Cave

    Great Campground

This is a nice, family friendly campground. Lots of very friendly other campers, a heated pool, playground for the kids, nice size lots with fire pits, picnic tables, electric& water (including at tent sites). Pool has an ADA lift chair. 2 shower/bath houses, camp store, a real bear cave you can tour in (free), a creek that meanders through it. The resort sits on the St. Joseph river & this park has a boat ramp & dock for fishing. There is a gate that campers need a code to get into so it keeps out unwanted’s. Nice staff. Yolanda is a great manager. Security, a ‘honey wagon’. Laundry center. Quiet hours are 10p-8a. It’s near Buchanan Michigan and the RED BUD Motor Cross track. Very friendly people, always stopping and talking.

    Shamrock Park

    Hidden Gem

The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There’s WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing. There’s also all sorts of activities for kids-ping pong, basketball, cornhole and more. It’s also a quick walk to a grocery store and restaurants. There’s no grill on the fire pit, so plan accordingly.

    Kal-Haven Outpost

Great place to bike to, spacious cabins, amazing staff

A group of us bike from Kalamazoo to South Haven every year using the Kal-Haven trail. We usually tent camp but tried a cabin here this year. It was the perfect option as the campground is right off the trail. They provide linens and have basic supplies (including firewood that they will deliver to your cabin) right at the general store. We also met a group that had hiked in to the primative sites and were using the trail to train for the Appalachian Trail. Everything is well-made and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful (they even let us check-in early when we biked in ahead of schedule). Highly recommend for those looking for a place close to the trail and to South Haven. The cabins have three queen beds and a sofa sleeper so they can comfortably hold up to eight people (we had five in our group and I never felt crowded). There's a large table inside and two chairs on the porch. There's also a large picnic table outside, a fire pit, and a grill. They are hoping to expand and add cabins sized for couples in the near future.

    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

    Elkhart RV Resort by Rjourney

    Very pleasant

Hope, the owner, is always so friendly & helpful. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean. You can get an entire 4 wheeler dump load of wood for $20. It’s nice dry wood. When we’ve camped in the past during April & October, we got free firewood those months. There’s a nice little camp store. We were given a nice welcome packet at check-in with visitor guides for the area. They recycle also. Pool and small miniature golf course. We really enjoy camping here. We’ve camped on several different sites here. We’ve stayed on the deluxe patio sites a couple of times when they were available. They have patio table & chairs on extra wide concrete pad, gas grill, fire pit & seating area in back.

    Covert/South Haven KOA Holiday

    Our first KOA

We weren’t sure what to expect given this was our first visit. But overall it was a good experience. Delivery service of food and firewood was great. Trash pickup was appreciated. WiFi reception was a welcomed surprise. Showers and bathrooms were clean. If you go, be sure to reserve one of the sites with the paved patio, pad and provided grill. Very nice. Most importantly, it was very quiet after 9pm when everything closed.

Downside - sites are a little cramped and the pool was very crowded.

    Potato Creek State Park Campground

Big, clean and plenty to do

The park itself is rather large, and the camping area is pretty expansive as well. Bathrooms are cleanish…but they start getting a little wild as the weekend wears on. Perpetual mud and slop from the showers, but functional. The sites are roomy enough but they are a little close together. Some sites are shaded, some are open…hard to tell when booking. Not many trees to set up a hammock on site. General store was well stocked and the staff across the board were very helpful.

Guide to Marcellus

Camping near Marcellus, Michigan offers diverse outdoor experiences within the gently rolling terrain of southwestern Michigan, where summer temperatures typically range from 70-85°F. The area sits within the St. Joseph River watershed, providing access to multiple lakes and waterways for recreation. Winter campers should prepare for average snowfall of 70 inches annually when considering off-season yurt camping options.

What to Do

Water recreation access: Shamrock Park provides direct river access for kayaking and fishing. "The ranger was awesome. You can buy firewood and ice on site. There's WiFi, electricity, showers and bathrooms. The campground is right on the water-perfect for kayaking or fishing," notes Ken from Shamrock Park.

Hiking trails: Fort Custer Recreation Area offers extensive hiking paths with wildlife viewing opportunities. "We hiked on a multi-use trail that the ranger suggested. The blue trail goes around a couple lakes and was wonderful. We did miss a sign or two and ended up turning our 4 mile trip into a 6.5 mile one but there are plenty of spots to rest and enjoy the time," shares Art S. from Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Climbing dunes: Warren Dunes State Park features massive sand formations for climbing. "Mt. Randall is the high dune to climb but not for the faint of heart!!! And beware, the sand does get HOT midday," warns Heidi S. from Warren Dunes State Park.

What Campers Like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms. "The bathrooms/showers are NICE! And it's only 10-15 minutes from the beach in south Haven-beautiful!" reports Melissa B. from Covert/South Haven KOA.

Fishing amenities: Specialized facilities for anglers make fishing trips more convenient. "What impressed me most was that they have a building specifically for cleaning fish, with scales, cutting boards and sinks. Another nice feature is the outdoor sink at the shower & restroom building for campers to wash dishes," explains Brian O. from Shamrock Park.

Family activities: Campgrounds offer organized events for children. "There are a lot of lodging options, tons of kids activities, both free and for a small fee, great pool, cafe and store! Lots of sports equipment to loan as well," notes Melissa B. from Covert/South Haven KOA.

What You Should Know

Site privacy varies: Some campgrounds offer more secluded options than others. "We've stayed at both sites listed. 161 you do have neighbors pretty close, but we just stayed at 51 and it is extremely secluded! We had an amazing time tent camping it was so quiet!" shares Hannah from Fort Custer Recreation Area.

Reservation timing: Peak season requires advance planning, particularly for yurt camping near Marcellus, Michigan. "We stayed for a 'glamping' weekend in 2019. All women camping weekend... sounded amazing for our group of girls!" mentions Melissa V. from Ebys Pines.

Alcohol policies: Some parks prohibit alcohol. "One setback was that you can't bring alcohol into the park. I wasn't planning on getting tanked or anything, but it would've been nice to drink a beer around the fire. And if you think the rangers don't enforce that rule, you're wrong," warns Dave E. from Warren Dunes State Park.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playgrounds available: Multiple play areas keep children entertained. "We enjoyed our stay at this campground. The gift shop met most of our needs and the owners were very friendly. The kids and dog really enjoyed the playground, swimming in the lake and jumping off the floating pad," shares Jennifer G. from Cranberry Lake Campground.

Extra amenities cost: Budget for additional activities. "Stayed here for a weekend. The campground was clean sites were all very nice and pool was really clean. The dog park was a nice added bonus," notes Ray R. from Ebys Pines.

Shower costs: Some facilities require quarters. "Nice campground, Judy (the main lady there) was fantastic very nice and easy to work with. Also don't forget quarters for the shower house!! The lady that runs the shower house was nice enough to give me some but it is a dollar for 9 minutes witch seemed to be plenty of time for a camp shower," advises Mitchell S. from Melville 7 Lakes.

Tips from RVers

Hookup options: Various electrical services available for different RV needs. "Elkhart Campground is great - Clean, easy access, lots of pull through sites with full hook up - pool, Close to big lake too!!!" reports Barbara E. from Elkhart Campground.

Site leveling: Check site details before booking. "We were placed in the rear section, which was just ok. Site needed leveling, had no shade at all and was close to major hwy. The front and side sites seemed nicer and had ample shade with some concrete sites," notes Deb K. from Elkhart Campground.

Extra fees: Budget for additional costs. "Stayed here 3 nights in October campground has most of the attractions (pool etc) closed as expected but still charged visitors $5 per person per day. And charged $5 per device per day for WiFi," warns Sean H. from Ebys Pines.
