Within Waterloo Recreation Area, this modern campground sits on a hill above Portage Lake, offering electric hookups and year-round access. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources manages this established site, which accommodates RVs, tents, and walk-in campers through multiple access options.
Most campsites feature paved pads with adjacent grass areas for tent setup. "Lake is down the hill from the campground," notes Debra B., and many sites include trees for natural shade. The campground operates two bathroom facilities within the loop plus an additional restroom at the beach area. Staff members regularly walk the grounds to inform campers about daily activities and programs.
Portage Lake provides the main recreational draw with a sandy beach, fishing pier equipped with benches and tables, and boat rentals available on-site. A handicap-accessible vista walkway connects the campground directly to the beach and concession area. The lake supports swimming and various water activities, though some visitors report seaweed and mucky conditions near the shore during summer months. A disc golf course operates within the recreation area, and the Waterloo-Pickney trail system offers hiking opportunities.
The campground experiences heavy use during peak season, with families and day-use visitors creating a busy atmosphere. "Like all the state park this is very clean and well maintained," observes Raul O.. Sites fill quickly on weekends, making reservations essential for summer stays. Winter camping remains available with limited snow removal to select sites only.
For additional camping options in the area, nearby Oaks Campgrounds and Holiday RV Campground provide alternatives. This location works well for campers wanting lake access with modern amenities in southern Michigan.
