Fishing access: Sterling State Park Campground offers excellent fishing opportunities with multiple fishing piers and a kayak launch. "There is a boat launch which is extremely popular and the bass and walleye fishing can't be beat. No boat, no problem. The park has several fishing piers as well as a kayak launch into a small inlet which is navagatable all the way to the beach, approximately two miles," notes Frances V.
Birding trails: Maumee Bay State Park Campground is a prime spot for bird watching enthusiasts. "We came up from North Carolina to attend the Magee Marsh Birding Festival. This is a really nice park and campground. The park is often very crowded during the tourist season, so make a reservation," shares Brian M.
Island exploration: Take a short ferry ride to explore the Lake Erie islands. "We stayed at one of the primitive tent sites at South Bass Island State Park and had the most enjoyable time. The site was on a cliff overlooking Lake Erie. The campground was very well kept and clean," says Jeremiah M.
What campers like
Private sites: Many campgrounds near Luna Pier feature sites with natural barriers. "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private. My grandparents were in the site next to me in their camper and I had to walk a ways to see their spot," says Kayla H. about Maumee Bay.
Beach access: The proximity to Lake Erie's shoreline is a major draw. At Sterling State Park Campground, "Sites are nice and large paved slabs, most trees are immature offering little shade. Beach is kept fairly clean and raked often. Bathrooms and showers are good," reports Nicole A.
Yurt camping options: For those interested in yurt camping near Luna Pier, Michigan, several parks offer these accommodations. "There's a yurt and cabins too," notes Dan N. about Maumee Bay. East Harbor State Park also provides yurt rentals among their accommodation options.
What you should know
Water conditions: Lake Erie algae blooms can affect swimming. "Swimming if the lake is not with bloom (which happens a lot) but is close to sites. Normally I am not very comfortable letting my kids swim here due to the water pollution and bloom)," warns Heidi S. about Sterling State Park.
Ferry logistics: When visiting island campgrounds, plan ferry timing carefully. "Access is via ferry. If you chose to leave your car on the mainland (free parking there) & pack in there are multiple sources for golf cart & bike rentals. For a quiet visit camp Monday thru Thursday; if you like crowds & parties reserve weekend time in advance," advises Blythe J.
Weather preparedness: Even summer evenings can get cool near the lake. "My only tip would be to bring plenty of bug spray in the summer, there are lots of bugs that come off the lake. Also make sure you bring jackets and blankets, even in the summer it can get pretty cool in the evening," recommends Kayla H.
