Several locations within a short drive of Elkridge, Maryland provide cabin accommodations for visitors seeking more shelter than tent camping. Cherry Hill Park in College Park offers cabin rentals with electricity and comfortable furnishings, while Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area in Catonsville provides more rustic cabin options. According to one visitor at Patapsco Valley, "The best part of this campground are the neat mini cabins. Small one room cabins that have electricity and heat. They are a nice touch for those that want to camp, but not completely 'rough it.'" Washington DC/Capitol KOA in Millersville and Ramblin' Pines in Woodbine also maintain cabin rentals with varying amenities.

Rustic log cabins and more modern furnished units are available depending on the location. The Olive Green cabin, operated by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, represents the more primitive end of the spectrum with a visitor noting it as "a two floor primitive cabin near Frederick, Maryland... a log cabin that was built around the mid-1860's." This historic cabin includes "various cookware (including cast iron), bed frames, tables, chairs, books and games" but lacks modern amenities. In contrast, Cherry Hill Park provides more contemporary cabin accommodations with a camper describing their stay as having "a level pull-thru site with picnic table on a paver patio, iron table and chairs, clean gravel surface, grill, and fire pit."

Most cabins require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and personal items. Cooking facilities vary significantly between locations - primitive cabins like Olive Green feature wood-burning stoves while others offer more modern kitchen setups. Pet policies differ by location, with some cabins specifically designated as pet-friendly. Little Bennett Campground in Clarksburg and Elk Neck State Park in North East both offer cabin options with varying amenities. Reservations are essential, particularly during summer months when cabins book quickly. Nearby towns provide access to groceries and supplies, though some campgrounds maintain on-site stores with basic provisions.

      Artillery Ridge Campground

Great campsite. Fire pit, picnic table, swimming pool ( not open), miniature golf course, laundromat, bathrooms, showers, dump station, gathering areas for groups, playground, and even a horse area and stalls for horses. Dog friendly. Staff was very helpful and curious.

      Hurricane camping

You just can't beat a pennsylvania park. This one is not an exception. Nice clean restroom, plenty of room. Now, what cost a star. Yes, it rained like hell. When we broke camp and go dump. The dump station was overflowing with sewer. Go to the guard shack to tell them, and find another site. None there. Can I go to an unused full hookup to dump? No! I would have to pay for the site. Two hours later, we found a place to dump for $10.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Gambrill State Park Campground

      Great Camp Spot

This is a great camping spot. The sites aren’t too close together and the hosts are very friendly. The only reason I gave it four stars is because we are near a highway so you can hear cars throughout the night. But the crickets make up for it by being as loud as possible. With the fees, it cost $25 for a non-electric site and with access to showers after a long trek I was happy to pay.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

      Susquehanna State Park Campground

A little noisy - park stuff, not campers

A beautiful, well maintained park with lots to do, great bathroom facilities and extremely nice people. The electric sites aren't all together, so you don't have RV's lined up but maybe annoying for folks who are tent camping. Avoid the locations in the mid-30's by the dumpster, both staff and campers start shaking the lid around 6:30. Between 5 AM and noon staff were driving big trucks and ATV's around with loud reverse horns, and slamming the fire pit grills, which they store sideways. Overall I had a really wonderful time, but that's largely down to good sound reduction inside the van. Almost zero cell service. I was able to get a couple of text messages in and out, but seemed to be a fluke.

      Elk Neck State Park Campground

      Great for families

This campsite was amazing for our first tent camping experience. The park was a godsend for keeping our toddler occupied and we felt very safe overall. While the beach is pretty, be careful about the water condition. We were warned before entering and informed of the risks. They were very clear on the condition of the water that day which was a yellow, slight risk. But normally it should be okay. We would definitely camp here again.

    Guide to Elkridge

Cabin accommodations near Elkridge, Maryland range from rustic structures to modern units with electricity and heating. Seasonal variations affect availability, with most park cabins open from April to October, while year-round options exist at locations like Ramblin' Pines and Cherry Hill Park. Winter cabin camping requires additional preparation with temperatures averaging 25-40°F from December through February.

    What to do

Swimming and water recreation: At Elk Neck State Park Campground, visitors access both river and beach areas. According to one camper, "In summer there is a beach on the North East River for swimming and the Turkey Point Lighthouse is nearby." During warmer months, families can also enjoy pool facilities at several locations.

Nature observation: The parks surrounding Elkridge provide multiple wildlife viewing opportunities. A visitor at Susquehanna State Park Campground noted, "This is a state operated park with camping and primarily draws Eagle watchers and photographers." Birdwatching is particularly productive during spring and fall migration periods.

Historical exploration: The region contains numerous historical structures and interpretive sites. One reviewer mentioned Susquehanna State Park has "a historic area in the park, with a working grist mill, mansion and other little buildings to view. Not really my thing, but was pretty neat." Most historical buildings maintain limited hours, typically 10am-4pm on weekends.

    What campers like

Park accessibility: The cabin camping areas maintain convenient locations to major metropolitan centers. According to a guest at Cherry Hill Park, "Proximity to DC and surrounding areas can't be beat. Uber, Lyft, bus, shuttle. It takes about a half hour to get downtown to the monuments." This central position makes weekend cabin stays practical for urban residents.

Varied accommodation types: Cabin options range substantially in size and amenities. A visitor to Washington DC / Capitol KOA shared, "After a peaceful protest, my sister, nephew and I stayed in a cabin for 1 night. We all slept well in the clean and comfortable cabin. The campground is a safe place for families." Many cabins accommodate 4-6 people comfortably.

Natural settings: Despite proximity to urban areas, cabin sites maintain natural surroundings. A camper at Little Bennett Campground commented, "The sites are quiet, very spacious, level, and heavily wooded with 50A service, water and sewer hookup." Tree cover provides shade during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 85°F.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Advance planning is essential, particularly for weekend stays. A visitor at Little Bennett Campground reported, "Reserved 137 days prior to arriving." Many parks open reservations 6 months in advance, with holiday weekends filling immediately.

Amenity limitations: Cabin facilities vary significantly between locations. A camper at Ramblin' Pines noted, "The camp has a pool, jump pillow, mini golf, fishing pond, barnyard with goats, and multiple playgrounds." Not all parks provide the same recreational options or facilities.

Accessibility considerations: Some cabin areas present terrain challenges. A Patapsco Valley visitor shared, "We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm and it was very wet even after the rain died down." Drainage issues can affect certain locations, particularly after heavy rainfall.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Many cabins provide convenient access to play areas for children. One visitor to Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area observed, "The Hilton entrance of Patapsco Valley Park is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park."

Activity planning: Family-friendly programming varies seasonally. A Cherry Hill Park guest mentioned, "Just can't be beat. Mini golf, two pools, arcade, 24 hour laundry, a store and office open early!! And late!!! Wow! Just awesome!" Most organized activities operate primarily on weekends and during summer months.

Safety considerations: Park layouts affect family comfort levels. A camper at Codorus State Park Campground shared, "The camp road was minimally hilly and would be safe and easy for little kids to ride their bikes, unlike some of the campgrounds that have pretty decent hills." Terrain and traffic patterns should factor into cabin selection for families with young children.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Cabin locations within campgrounds vary in quality and access. An RVer at Codorus noted, "There is a wide variety of sites so finding one that you like should not be difficult, there are some in wide-open park-like settings, and some that are treed." Most parks provide site maps with specifications online.

Utility considerations: Hookup availability differs between cabins. A camper at Cherry Hill Park described, "We had a level pull-thru site with electric hookups that can accommodate various amp requirements." Some cabins provide external utility connections for those bringing additional equipment.

Seasonal preparation: Weather impacts vary by season. A Washington DC/Capitol KOA visitor observed, "The sites were clean and well maintained. The grounds were clean and well maintained." Winter cabin camping requires additional planning, with nighttime temperatures frequently dropping below freezing from December through February.
