RV parks in Maryland and Virginia around Chaptico provide full hookup options for recreational vehicles across several state and private facilities. Prince William Forest RV Campground offers electric hookups, water, and a sanitary dump station with primarily pull-through sites that accommodate big rigs. Thousand Trails Harbor View in Colonial Beach features full hookup sites with 50-amp service, while La Grande RV Resort in Leonardtown has electric and water connections with fifty-amp capability. Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp provides sewer hookups with designated big-rig friendly spaces. Westmoreland State Park Campground maintains seasonal availability from April through October with thirty-amp hookups on gravel pads. "The site was level and the full hookups all worked fine. Beside our gravel site, there was a small brick patio with cafe table and chairs in addition to the picnic table, fire ring, and grill."

Navigation to several of these parks requires careful planning as some have narrow interior roads with limited maneuvering space. Between April and November, Goose Creek Recreation Area provides thirty-amp electric service without water hookups at individual sites. Cell service varies significantly by carrier, with reviewers noting spotty connectivity at Prince William Forest but good coverage at Bull Run Regional Park. Most facilities welcome pets with designated pet-friendly loops. Dump stations are available at the larger parks, though not all offer on-site sewer connections. A visitor commented: "Gravel site pad could definitely use some maintenance and fresh material added. Had to put down boards to park our travel trailer because about a third of the pad had just turned into mud." Advance reservations are essential during summer and fall foliage seasons when occupancy reaches capacity, particularly at parks within 40 miles of Washington DC.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Burke Lake Park Campground

      Amenities good

The park is very well maintained, and the campsites have clean fire pits and cooking grills. The restrooms are clean, spacious, and well maintained, and my campsite was large enough to comfortably fit a 6-person tent and a canopy.

However, there were a few concerns during our stay. Despite the campground’s quiet hours policy starting at 10:00 PM, many campers continued to make noise well past that time. I did not notice any campground staff or maintenance personnel making rounds to enforce the quiet hours.

I also felt concerned about security. One of my neighboring campers, who was visiting from South Carolina, told me that his generator had been stolen during the night. He reported the theft to the police, and an official report was filed. Incidents like this made me feel unsafe while camping.

I recommend increasing staff or security patrols, especially during the evening and overnight hours, to enforce quiet hours and improve the safety and security of campers and their belongings. With better enforcement and security, Burke Lake Campground would provide an even better camping experience.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Joint Base Andrews Military FamCamp

Could be a great campground but......

There are some good things about this Famcamp. It's like a diamond in the rough. If the military would spend some time and money on it, it could be a great campground. One of the greatest points about this campground is its location. You are so close to downtown D.C.! Every RV site (as far as I saw) was a level concrete pad. All sites, except for tent sites, have full electricity. Most sites have sewer and water. Sites 12-18 should be mainly used for the smaller travel trailers. I had an interesting time getting my 35' 5th wheel into the site. Even though I got my RV into the site, I don't have much room for my truck. My site has a picnic table, fire pit, and a grill. Everything is rusted beyond repair. My grill was filled with cigarette butts and my fire pit had trash in it. There is some shade. My site has two trees at the front of the pad on both sides of the RV. My bedroom stays nice and cold and I have a good view for my Starlink in the rear. The sites are close to each other, but there is some space. The good thing is that we are surrounded by the golf course. You don't get much noise from the base, because of the location, and because the FamCamp is surrounded by trees. You can hear the busy road outside the fence but I don't hear it much inside the RV. Every once in a while you'll hear an aircraft... but this is an air base, it's expected. We were told the community laundry was not working and to use the base laundry mat. Finally, one of the best parts about the campground, is the lady at outdoor rec that is in charge of the Famcamp. She is very nice and helpful. She will try to assist you with anything you need from directions to useful tips.

    Guide to Chaptico

RV parks near Chaptico, Maryland offer a variety of camping experiences within 40 miles of the Potomac River watershed. The region features elevations ranging from near sea level to approximately 300 feet, creating a landscape of rolling hills dotted with waterfront camping opportunities. Most campgrounds in the region experience high humidity in summer months with temperatures averaging 85°F during peak season from June through September.

    What to do

Fossil hunting at beach access points: Westmoreland State Park Campground provides unique paleontological opportunities along the Potomac River. "We came from Pa/De and wanted to look for sharks teeth. It was beautiful here so we decided to stay the night," notes camper Sara A. The park features two beach areas—one accessible by car and another requiring a hike.

Military history exploration: Located near several historical sites, campers can access regional military museums and monuments. "DC just up the road. National Marine Corp Museum just around corner," reports Kenneth H. about Prince William Forest RV Campground. The campground serves as a convenient base for exploring area battlefields and monuments.

Water recreation on the Potomac: Multiple waterfront access points allow for kayaking, fishing, and swimming opportunities. "There is a pier out into the river to fish on. The outdoor recreation center has bait, snacks, and drinks," writes Jack R. about Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp. Several campgrounds rent kayaks and canoes for exploring the river system.

    What campers like

Clean shower facilities: Bath houses receive consistently positive reviews across multiple rv parks near Chaptico. "Bathhouses are always SO clean and heated in the winter. So appreciate the recycling bins," comments RL about Westmoreland State Park. Another camper at Bull Run Regional Park stated, "I'll go again just for the showers...locking doors, individual stalls. Hot dog. Best camping showers I've ever had."

Campground community events: Some parks organize regular social gatherings for campers. "They have Saturday night communal bonfires, but we didn't go check that out," mentions Ariel F. about Thousand Trails Harbor View. Staff at these locations frequently create opportunities for camper interaction.

Accessibility to nearby towns: The proximity to Colonial Beach and other small towns provides convenient shopping options. "Nearby Colonial Beach is a cute area that has nice waterfront access," notes Ariel F. Most campgrounds are within 15-20 minutes of grocery stores and restaurants, though selection may be limited in more rural locations.

    What you should know

Seasonal water quality concerns: Water conditions in the Potomac watershed can vary by season. "At the time of my visit a couple of weeks ago there was a bit of algae in the water that could cause irritation to stomach and skin, so just be mindful of this," warns RL about Westmoreland State Park. Water quality alerts are typically posted at beach access points.

Site drainage issues: Several campgrounds experience drainage problems during heavy rain. "Had to put down boards to park our travel trailer because about a third of the pad had just turned into mud," reports Nick E. about Thousand Trails Harbor View. Another camper at Goose Creek Recreation Area noted, "Rained while we where there and the ground was very saturate so the puddles where quite large."

Cell service variability: Coverage differs significantly between campgrounds. "I work full-time remote and the Verizon service was perfect with our hotspot," states Ariel F. about Thousand Trails Harbor View. At other locations, connectivity may be limited, as one camper reports, "If you have allergies, avoid spring. EVERYTHING outside was covered in a light haze of pollen."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Consider campground layout when selecting sites with children. "Only draw back is that there's only one playground that's awkwardly located," mentions Yvonne B. about Bull Run Regional Park. Some campgrounds feature centralized play areas while others have more distributed recreation options.

Nature programs: Several parks offer educational activities for younger campers. "They did have great trails, a lot of scheduled events for all ages, a pool and boat rentals and competitive prices," shares Rachel A. about Westmoreland State Park. Many parks provide junior ranger programs during summer months.

Space between sites: Family groups should check site proximity when booking. "The sites are extremely close. Tent campers are an absolute afterthought here, as the sites are in the back and the bathhouse is in the front," writes Jocelyn B. about Thousand Trails Harbor View. Military Park Fort AP Hill Champs Camp RV Park offers better spacing, with one camper noting, "Level lots. Clean facilities."

    Tips from RVers

Leveling considerations: Many RV parks around Chaptico require additional equipment for proper setup. "Our site wasn't fully level, so bring plenty of leveling blocks," advises Thomas about Fort Belvoir Travel and RV Camp. Several campgrounds feature gravel pads that may settle unevenly over time.

Utility connections: Electric service varies widely between locations. "They also have up to 50amp full hookups. All of them looked well maintained," reports Megan K. about Prince William Forest RV Campground. Campers should verify available amperage when booking sites for larger RVs with high power requirements.

Interior road navigation: Some campgrounds present challenges for larger rigs. "The site was level and nice size but getting in and through the park was difficult. Some turns were sharp and trees were very close to the road," notes a camper from 1 Acre campground, which despite its small size offers "50AMP and sewer hookups for a convenient stay."
