Tent campsites in the Easton, Maryland region provide primitive camping opportunities with varied access to the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding natural areas. Sandy Point State Park offers youth group tent camping from March to October near Annapolis, while Lacy Oasis Campground provides six tent-specific sites with basic amenities. Calvert Cliffs State Park also maintains youth group camping areas accessible via multiple routes including hike-in and boat-in options, operating seasonally from late March through October.

The primitive tent camping areas generally feature basic amenities with varying levels of services. Fire rings and picnic tables are common at established sites, though campers should verify fire regulations as restrictions may apply seasonally. Most tent-focused campgrounds provide vault toilets or portable facilities, though Redden State Forest Campground in nearby Delaware offers more rustic backcountry tent camping with pit toilets and self-service firewood. Sites are typically set on natural surfaces ranging from packed dirt to forest floor, with minimal site preparation. Water access varies significantly between locations, with Sandy Point offering drinking water while more remote tent sites require bringing your own supplies.

Tent campers seeking solitude can find secluded backcountry camping experiences particularly at locations like Redden State Forest, where the primitive setting creates an authentic outdoor experience. Sites are generally shaded by forest canopy, providing natural relief during summer months. The coastal locations offer unique opportunities for fossil hunting, fishing, and beach access not typically found at inland campgrounds. According to one visitor at Redden State Forest, "The campground is beautiful, secluded, clean, and peaceful. I think it's a best kept secret." Areas near water typically fill quickly during peak summer season, with Sandy Point experiencing significant crowding between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

      Redden State Forest Campground

Quiet primitive campsites with slight road noise. We didn’t hear any train during our stay. We stayed at site 10 on the left branch where the newer gravel tent sites are in the pines. The potalet is nearby. It’s was dark at our campsite when we arrived. Nice and level gravel pad with plenty of room - sites are large enough to pull into and k turn if needed (although we saw the sign saying to park parallel to the site entrance in the morning- we have a roof top tent on our vehicle). When I put my headlamp on there were all these tiny sparkles on the ground out among the pine trees surrounding our campsite. When I walked up really close to one and shined my lamp on it, I saw that they are pretty big spiders. A little unnerving but also pretty? Told my brain I was in a glittery fairy forest and slept fine. 🤣

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

      Woodlawn Campground is a gem!

Manager is very friendly and helpful. Lovely, peaceful place to spend a few nights. Plus it's reasonably priced and convenient to dining and shopping.

    Guide to Easton

Tent camping near Easton, Maryland offers diverse options within the coastal plain region where elevations rarely exceed 100 feet above sea level. The Eastern Shore's moderate climate features humid summers with temperatures averaging 85°F and mild winters, though campers should prepare for seasonal jellyfish in bay waters during late summer months. Water access camping sites require different preparations than inland forest locations.

    What to do

Fossil hunting along beaches: At Calvert Cliffs State Park Youth Group Camping, visitors can search for prehistoric shark teeth and other fossils. "It is a very nice walk about 2 miles to the beach where you can hunt for fossils. The beach has gotten smaller over the years however the trail has gotten much better," notes Anthony S.

Fishing and crabbing: Endeavor Point provides excellent access to water activities with pier facilities. "The pier was perfect to fish or crab off of and the beach had great views of the sunrise," reports Ally S. Crabbing licenses allow up to a bushel of crabs per person according to Maryland regulations.

Beach swimming: Waterfront access varies significantly between sites. "There are wonderful views of the water and swimming at the beach, pavilions for social gatherings, showers and bathrooms that are kept pretty very clean," notes Rachel S. about Sandy Point State Park, though swimming conditions are best before August when jellyfish become prevalent.

    What campers like

Secluded forest settings: Redden State Forest Campground offers a quiet retreat with natural surroundings. "Secluded. Spacious sites. Firewood available. No facilities. Quiet," says Fern B. The campsites feature fire pits, picnic tables and self-service firewood for $5 per bundle.

Private tent sites: Lacy Oasis Campground provides dedicated tent camping areas separate from other accommodations. "If you are a nature lover, a person who loves peace, serenity, and tranquility, or just need some respite, Lacy Oasis is the place to be," shares Terrance D. The campground maintains six specific tent sites with basic facilities.

Waterfront sunrise views: Tent campers at Matoaka Beach Cottages enjoy premium coastal camping spots. "I just showed up and got a perfect camp spot with a view of the sunrise and access to the private beach," explains Michael. Tent sites with Chesapeake Bay views fill quickly during summer weekends.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements vary: Some campgrounds require advance planning while others allow walk-ups. "This is no longer a first come, first served campground. Reservations must be made in advance at bookyoursite.com, only 3 days consecutive allowed," explains BA K. about Redden State Forest.

Seasonal crowds affect experience: Campgrounds near water become extremely busy during summer holidays. "Extremely over crowded in the summer. The park closes daily very early as it hits capacity. The best times to go are winter, spring, and fall," advises Tony P.

Facilities differ significantly: Toilet and water facilities range from well-maintained bathhouses to primitive options or none at all. "The campsites are small and close together. A total of 7 campsites. Firewood, fire pit, grill, and park bench available," notes Tiffany M. about Blackbird State Forest. "There are a few tent camping spots as well as cabins. Just call ahead," advises Michael about Matoaka Beach Cottages.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Patapsco Valley State Park-Hilton Area offers extensive child-friendly facilities. "The Hilton entrance of Patapsco Valley Park is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park," shares Angel G.

Safe swimming areas: Sandy beaches with gradual entry points work best for families with young children. "My family and I have been coming to Sandy Point my entire life. It is a great little spot on the Chesapeake river. Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth," notes Angel G.

Weather preparedness: Summer thunderstorms can create challenging camping conditions. "One negative was that when it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm," warns Alexandra T. about Patapsco Valley.

    Tips from RVers

Size restrictions apply: Many tent campgrounds near Easton strictly limit vehicle sizes. "Travel trailers, pull behinds, motorhomes are not allowed. Tents, cars, overlander SUVs, minivans and small Class B camper vans are allowed. Nothing over 25 ft allowed," explains BA K. about camping regulations at Redden State Forest.

Limited hookup availability: Most tent-focused sites offer minimal RV amenities. Military Park United States Naval Academy FamCamp provides one of the few exceptions with electric hookups and water connections. "Military campground. Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap," notes Ginny L.

Parking logistics: Tent campgrounds often have specific rules about where vehicles can park in relation to sites. "Apparently you're not supposed to pull onto the gravel with your vehicle, just park parallel to the road alongside it," advises Evan C. about Redden State Forest, where the designated tent pads are set back from parking areas.
