"Surrounding the campground are miles of biking and hiking trails that are easily accessible from your campsite. There is a six-mile loop that takes you along the beautiful rocky coast with views of lighthouses, islands, forests, and wetlands," explains Nancy W. The Schoodic section provides a quieter alternative to the main Acadia sections.
Swimming options: Several campgrounds offer swimming facilities for when hiking gets too hot. At Narrows Too Camping Resort, a visitor noted, "There is a swimming pool, horseshoes, volleyball, laundry, and bathrooms." For lake swimming, Patten Pond Camping Resort provides "a small beach at the lake where you can swim and kayak (for rent)," according to Mara S.

Waterfront sites: Campers consistently mention the value of water-view accommodations. At Bar Harbor Oceanside KOA, one visitor shared, "Our waterfront site 344 was terrific - gorgeous view, and one of the larger waterfront spots. We could launch our kayaks directly from the site." These premium sites typically cost more but provide direct water access.
Proximity to Acadia without crowds: Many visitors appreciate cabin locations that offer National Park access without the congestion. "This campground is in a good location to access Acadia National Park. Some nice sites, but definitely at a premium," notes Katie about Narrows Too Camping Resort. Most cabins are within a 15-30 minute drive of park entrances.
Island Explorer shuttle access: Several campgrounds near Otis provide connections to the free Island Explorer bus system. At Hadley's Point Campground, one reviewer mentioned, "The campground is on the Island Explorer bus loop, which is the bus that takes you all around Mount Desert Island, to Acadia, and Bar Harbor. We used the bus almost every day, and it was super helpful because you do not want to try and find parking in Acadia in the peak season."
