Wildlife viewing, shoreline walks, and ocean overlooks draw campers to Megunticook Campground in Rockport, Maine. A short path from the sites leads down to the rocky coast, where picnic tables and chairs are positioned facing the water. Reviewers mention spotting porpoises and seals from this area, and the eastward exposure makes it a reliable spot for watching the sunrise. The campground runs from May 15 through Columbus Day, with the pool reportedly still open as late as October 1.
Sites are wooded with shade trees, and many accommodate two vehicles. As Mark C. notes, "for a private campground the sites are a decent size with some trees." Spacing between sites is reasonable, though several reviewers flag that sites are close enough together to limit privacy. Road noise is a known issue: the campground sits near a busy road, and most sites pick up traffic sound. Reviewers specifically point to sites 84 through 87 and cabins 8 through 10 as the quietest options worth requesting.
The bathhouse earns consistent praise for cleanliness. Amenities include full hookups with electric, water, and sewer, along with a dump station, laundry, a pool, horseshoes, a playground, and trash pickup at each site. The camp store is well stocked. WiFi is available for an added fee, and cell coverage has been noted as inconsistent by multiple visitors. The campground sits between Starlight Lodge at Rockport Harbor and Island View Inn, giving campers nearby alternatives if the campground is full.
Pricing warrants attention before booking. A tent site runs around $50 per night, and several optional add-on fees can increase the total: a site lock fee to guarantee a specific site, a weather cancellation guarantee, WiFi access, and a dump station fee. Rates quoted by phone have varied from what some campers saw listed online, so confirming the full cost breakdown before arrival is worth doing. Reservations are accepted and pets are allowed. Those exploring campgrounds near Rockport will find this one a reasonable base for day trips to both Camden and Rockland.
Megunticook Campground suits RV travelers and families who want full hookups, organized activities, and quick access to the Maine coast, and works less well for campers prioritizing seclusion or road noise separation.
