Penobscot Bay is the deepest body of water in the Gulf of Maine…and I live at its shores with my husband Steven, father Zaven, a flock of sheep and goats, three hives of honey bees, extensive gardens and lots of space to make art and good food. Together we run a family campground that was established in 1965 and steward the land…we provide a place for people to come and relax, wander through the organic gardens, explore the beach and re-connect with themselves and others. We’re proud to be part of the working waterfront of Maine where recreation, fishing and shipping ply the same waters and provide a sense of purpose for all sorts of people.

    AMC Gorman Chairback Lodge

    Pampering in Maine's 100-mile wilderness

General: One of three AMC (Appalachian Mountain Club) lodges in Maine’s 100-mile wilderness. This one is located on Long Pond and has 12 cabins plus a bunkhouse. One of the cabins is ADA-accessible. There is a lodge with a living room, dining hall, games, and small store.

Cabin Quality: Eleven of the cabins are very basic with varying amounts of sleeping arrangements. The ADA-accessible cabin has two bedrooms, electric outlets, and a bathroom with a shower.

Bath/Shower house: If you are staying in the bunkhouse or a non-ADA-accessible cabin, the bathrooms and showers are in the main lodge. There is also a sauna.

Activities/Amenities: Three meals per day are included. A hearty breakfast and dinner plus a bag lunch. Dietary restrictions are honored. When there is a small group of guests, meals are served family style; for larger groups, they are served buffet style. Rowboats, kayaks, and paddle boards are available at no additional charge, but the wind was too strong for us to get on the water when we were there. In the winter months, snowshoes are available. You can also cross-country ski from but need to bring your own skis. The hikes are awesome! I hiked the Third Mountain Trail directly from the lodge. Signage was excellent. I also hiked the Gulf Hagas Trail, but this requires a drive to get to either of the two trailheads. Don't even try for cell service!

Note that this lodge and cabins are accessible by an approximately 20-mile dirt road from the west and 15 miles from the east. Your fee includes a hefty parking/road use fee. The staff was very present and provided excellent service during our two-night stay.

    Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA

    Bar Harbor/ Oceanside KOA Holiday

The KOA staff were very friendly and helpful, the facilities were very clean, and the store was well-stocked. The sites were a bit close, but the neighbors I had during my stay would be out and about during the day if I didn't happen to be out and about in Acadia NP or Bar Harbor myself... so that kind of made up for it. The first few nights of my stay was spent in the "Premium" section where we were on the other side of the road from the "Oceanfront" sites--it almost felt like Oceanfront sites when Big Rigs weren't blocking the view. The next 5 nights we were at an "Oceanfront" site, which was really great and worth the extra money to watch the seals, birds, and easy access for kayaking. HOWEVER--despite knowing privacy isn't really something you can find at most KOAs, it was SHOCKING to me the lack of social awareness some people have at sunset. Despite being next to the public oceanfront area (where lovely chairs and tables are provided) people would literally walk to the Oceanfront campsites and stand there snapping photos or just hanging around at sunset, even if my husband and I were sitting down at our picnic table eating our dinners and trying to enjoy the sunset together. (Picture provided [with blocked faces) of just one of the couples one evening standing right next to our firepit... maybe 10ft from where we were setting up dinner on our picnic table.) So... be prepared with how to handle that if it's something you think may bother you, too.

    Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA

    Great location, super crowded

The Bar Harbor KOA delivered what it promised, but I am not sure we’d return.  The staff was very friendly and helpful.  They deliver nicely bagged firewood and have daily garbage pickup.  The bathrooms were clean and camp store well stocked.  The Island Explorer bus for Acadia stops at the campground.  There are rv, tent, and cabin options.  Our waterfront site was terrific - gorgeous view, and we could launch our kayaks directly from the site.  The fire pit was big and sturdy.  There were great sunrises and sunsets.   The location is an easy drive for downtown for Bar Harbor, North East Harbor and South West Harbor.

My challenge with the KOA is the sites were so close together.  Everyone was really packed in, with no buffer between sites.  The 339 - 342 sites were literally bumper to bumper.   It is a very busy campground.   If  you are looking for privacy, this is not the place to go.

Good place to see the surroundings

The reception at this campground is very friendly. Pitches are fairly spacious, but still a bit close together. Garbage is picked up in the morning, which is very nice.

The sanitary facilities are quite outdated and, in addition, could definitely be a bit cleaner.

The pool is clean, but everything around it also looks very outdated and worn.

We had a pleasant time here and would definitely recommend this place for a few days.

Good option to access Acadia, but some downsides

This campground was in a good location to access Acadia National Park. Some nice sites, but definitely at a premium. No extra amenities. We were given a site along the highway, and I was very unhappy there. The site isn’t even in the main campground area. I would have stayed somewhere else if I knew that’s where our site was located. No privacy and it lots of road noise. I did not want to sit outside. Our picnic table was in shambles and chunks of the table fell off when my son tried to sit there. It was in usable to us.

    Nice place

Overall, this was a nice place to stay. The laundromat was helpful. The bathrooms were fairly clean. We had a beautiful view from our campsite! Not all campsites had full hookup and we were told that one of the dump stations worked, but as we were leaving, we realized it didn’t.

Perfect for Retirees and Couples Near Acadia

The location of this campsite couldn't be better. It's just a short drive from Acadia National Park, Ellsworth, and numerous other hikes and coastal attractions, making it a perfect base for exploring the area.

However, I would primarily recommend this campsite for retirees and couples without children. The park doesn't offer many kid-friendly amenities beyond the pool, so families with young children might find it lacking in entertainment options.

On the upside, the serene and tranquil atmosphere is ideal for those seeking a peaceful getaway. The facilities are well-maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Overall, it's a great spot for those looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the region in a convenient location.

    10/10 experience!

The owners were so incredibly nice and helpful! They not only surprised our girls with picks of their own antique dolls on arrival but they gave us their own brochure with hidden gems all around the area. We got to hike some of the best spots without the crowds and even got to catch starfish at a spot nearby. The sites are a bit crowded but the view we had more than made up for it. This Campground Has A Drinking Water Issue!

The two staff encounters we had were friendly and the staff had a desire to please. The grounds were pleasant. We visited when there were not a lot of campers and the weather was dry. Two of the four clothes washers were inoperable. We did not use the washrooms or laundromat. Upon arrival we were advised that the recent hurricanes caused water issues, but that the water was tested daily and everything was ok. During our set up process the water that came out of the tap was terrible & disgusting (see photo). We talked to the office and demanded bottled drinking water and that the poor water quality from the faucet be addressed. After 'checking with management', we were allocated two gallons of bottled water per day. Staff later stopped by in the process of flushing the water lines in our section of the campground and ran the water until it was acceptable(but not totally clear). Our water problem, was reportedly a new problem, not the hurricane problem. Bottom line after reading other reviews, some from a year or two ago, MT DESERT NARROWS CAMPGROUND HAS A DRINKING WATER PROBLEM and apparently, ownership has so far elected not to address the problem with a treatment system. Most frustrating- they were not entirely forthright about the issue.

    Nice Quality and Convenient Campground

We had a great experience here. Our tent site was wooded and level, not too close to neighbors. Checkin was easy and staff was friendly. The bathhouse near us was large, modern, and extremely clean. Campground is close to Acadia and it was easy to head back for a nap when the park got too crazy busy.

The check-in couple were awesome! Chatted for a while and made us feel welcomed. The campgrounds were very nice, and our tent site was the largest site on the grounds.

The loss of one star is the pricing. I guess the campgrounds were bought out by some corporate conglomerate last year, and the current pricing shows. We paid $75 for one night. There was water to the site, but no electricity.

Our 1st fave on our x country trip

LOVED it here. We had a great spot with front row views of the water, just steps to the Adirondack chairs. Neighbors were regulars and had great tips for area musts. We slid on on a cancellation. The little shop at the front has the best gems. Family owned and operated, helpful and friendly staff, and steps to awesome lobster rolls and clam chowder. Close to everything. The weather was perfect. There was one super loud lady on our last night (maybe slightly over served or angry??) but nothing headphones couldn’t cure…I was surprised it went on for as long as it did with quiet hours starting at 9, but it was the only “downside” of our stay. That bad apple didn’t ruin it for us though. Would definitely come back anytime!

    Amazing Stay, Terrific New Ownership

Sennebec Lake Campground provided a blend of relaxation and adventure for the kiddos and the campground's commitment to modern conveniences is evident, with amenities that bring together comfort and wilderness living. During our stay, remarkable service provided a seamless experience. We have a 35ft RV, and we faced no issues  getting in and out of the property and the sites across the water were level, with no extra leveling needed.

The campground's location was a highlight, offering easy access to the towns of Camden, Rockport, and Rockland, each having with their own unique New England charm. Sennebec Lake Campground is a sanctuary for families seeking a serene escape without sacrificing modern comforts.

    Great KOA!

My family and I stayed at this KOA this past week. It was agreat experience! That staff was awesome and over the top accommodating. We had a pull through site with full hook up right across from the on site Lobster Trap Cafe. The site was spacious and comfortable. The whole campground was neat and clean. Staff members pick up trash throughout the day at all of the sites. The Lobster Trap had a good menu, and great customer service. They are mainly open in the evenings but also appear to serve lunch and breakfast on the weekends.

The camp store was well stocked also. There is also an island shuttle bus stop right at the entrance to the campground. There is a gas station and take out restaurant ( Island Take Out) right across from the entrance as well. There was a nice dog park as well. Cell service with AT&T was great. Cell service with T-Mobile was spotty. We did not try the campground wifi. The only down side to the trip was gnats and mosquitos, but that was all over the island and no fault of the KOA. This was one of the best KOA's we have visited and we will definitely stay there again when we visit Acadia.

    Nice campground!

Beautiful sunsets over the water and proximity to Bar Harbor & Acadia NP make this campground a must visit.

Be advised many sites do not have dump stations, so be sure to know what you’re signing up for when reserving your spot.

Most spots are on uneven to very uneven ground, come prepared with whatever method you have to level out your setup. We could’ve used an extra set of the camco yellow leveling pads.

Showers are a little small but clean and hot. Washer/dryers work great.

    Not Impressed

I would’ve given only one star but the view of the water is lovely. However the campground itself is less than thrilling. Next to no maintenance that I can tell. Our site (91) is very unlevel, the grass is 8 inches high, there are ruts and a sinkhole that you need to navigate carefully or twist an ankle. And although it thankfully remains empty - the site beside us is a ‘pull in’ meaning is we do get a neighbor, we will face each other and share literally less than 10’ in total. We will return to Acadia but not this campground
