    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Buena Vista Farms Campground cabins overlook a stocked pond where campers can fish alongside their pets. This established campground welcomes pets across all accommodation types including tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and modern cabins. The camping area features basketball courts, a play area, and outdoor games, making it family-friendly while accommodating four-legged companions. Crazy Horse Campground maintains similarly pet-inclusive policies with both electric and full hookup options available for RVers traveling with animals. The owners are fantastic, friendly and caring, keeping the grounds in great shape while ensuring pets and their owners feel welcome. ['Waverly Lake City Park provides a more primitive camping experience for pet owners, with limited amenities but peaceful surroundings.'] Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area offers multiple pet-friendly camping options including primitive sites and cabins, though campers should be prepared for mosquitoes and wildlife encounters.

Hiking trails throughout these campgrounds provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with Jim Edgar Panther Creek offering extensive outdoor recreation areas suitable for leashed pets. The primitive campground at Jim Edgar features seven well-spaced sites along the tree line with plenty of shade, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and three-sided shelter accessible to campers with pets. Prairie Lake Campground within the same wildlife area has electricity with centrally located water access and a boat dock with approximately six slips, making it ideal for pet owners who enjoy water activities with their dogs. Spots like site #78 offer valuable shade trees during summer months when the open areas can become quite hot. Campgrounds in this region tend to be less crowded during weekdays, though hunters with dogs may fill spaces during appropriate seasons. Each location enforces standard pet policies requiring leashes and proper waste disposal to maintain clean grounds.

The Double J Campground and RV Park

This place has a great location

The bathrooms here were heated and sparkling clean. Our Starlink had zero obstructions worked lightening fast. We LOVED having a dog park to exercise our dogs daily!

Great location, close to all the Springfield attractions and Slauterhaus Brewing in Auburn, IL (this is the best brewery nearby, better than Buzz Bomb or Obed & Issacs in town!).

      Country Bend Campground

      Great family friendly campground

Great place to stay and feel part of the community.  Pretty scenery to walk around.  Plenty of lakes/ponds to fish.  We couldn't boat while there due to COVID but look forward to going back and taking our kayaks.  Attentive and Friendly camp hosts. Pet friendly. Close to town if you've forgotten anything or want to have a restaurant dinner. Close to the highway for easy access.  Full hookup available. Monthly or Season also available.

Lincolns New Salem Historic Site Campground

      Great area

We loved this campground. Was all paved sites and roads. Pretty level sites. Utilities harder to get to but all in all a great family campground. Pet friendly. Not 5 stars since we had to leave a day early due to weather. Not their fault but sites became a lake and couldn’t even step outside. Barely any AT&T service. Couldn’t use phone as hotspot at all.

      Great experience!

Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

      McCully Heritage Project

      A nice getaway

A friend discovered this gem a while back and we now frequent it. Super inexpensive for the space that you get. Free firewood. We have only stayed at the largest site as it has good fishing and a place for us to launch our paddleboards and kayaks. We easily fit a dozen people over the 4th of July. Nice hiking trails near. Watch for ticks. Don’t be alarmed if you see cats or the neighbors dogs roaming around the site. They are friendly.

      Pere Marquette State Park Campground

The bonus is the fried chicken

Great little campground just outside of Grafton, Illinois, on the Mississippi River. The campground is located in an open grove of old trees. There were owls when we were there. In winter there are a lot of eagles feeding in the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers which meet at the park. The Lewis & Clark expedition started nearby. Most of the sites were fairly level, but I didn’t see any pull through sites. Lots of hiking trails, and the lodge has one of the best fried chicken dinners around on Sunday.

    Guide to Woodson

Woodson, Illinois sits at approximately 640 feet elevation in central Illinois amid gently rolling terrain. The area experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly reaching 90°F and cold winters that can drop below 20°F. Most campgrounds near Woodson remain open from April through October, with limited winter access at select locations.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Buena Vista Farms Campground, guests can fish in the stocked pond. "They offer kayaks, canoes, and peddle boats free to campers," notes Sarah S., who enjoyed the modern cabin amenities.

Water recreation: Sangchris Lake State Park Campground offers excellent kayaking on its scenic lake. "I took a trip alone with my tent for 4 days in May. The place is as pristine as it was when I was a kid- perfect bathhouse, beautiful lakeshore, and cozy tent camping," shares Jessica N.

Disc golf course: Pittsfield City Lake features a disc golf course along with other recreational facilities. "It's a county park, so you have basketball courts, soccer field, disc golf course, and a beautiful reservoir," explains Dave N., making it a versatile destination for outdoor activities.

    What campers like

Spacious, private sites: At the primitive campground in Jim Edgar Panther Creek, visitors appreciate the layout. "There are 7 sites well spaced with a picnic table, fire ring, trash can and three sided shelter in each site. Pit toilets are in the middle. Each site is along the tree line with plenty of shade," reports Amanda C.

Clean facilities: Crazy Horse Campground maintains well-kept grounds and facilities. "The owners are fantastic, friendly and caring. They keep the grounds in great shape and always have fun activities to participate in," says ELLYN P.

Lakeside camping: Waverly Lake City Park provides peaceful waterfront sites. "My wife and I really enjoy this campsite," states Darren D., who found the location quiet and pleasant despite noting that "mosquitoes are BRUTAL. Come prepared."

    What you should know

Seasonal crowds: Campgrounds in the region fill up differently based on time of year. At Sangchris Lake State Park, one camper advises, "If you want a lake spot, make a reservation way in advance," according to Rhonda W.

Limited connectivity: Cell service varies widely between campgrounds. At Double J Campground and RV Park, campers can access WiFi, though one visitor noted, "WiFi is about the speed of dial up, for the price you should be able to do more with it."

Weather considerations: Summer heat can be intense in open camping areas. Some sites provide valuable shade: "Our spot, #78 sat under a tree with great shade," mentions Jennifer K. about Prairie Lake Campground, an important feature during hot Illinois summers.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming access: Only certain campgrounds offer swimming. Crazy Horse Campground includes "a small beach area with volleyball," according to Sarah S., making it suitable for families looking for water activities.

Playground facilities: Illinois State Fair Campground provides more than just camping spots. "Take time to walk around the fairgrounds as they are pretty. The 4H building has a lovely garden out front," suggests Faith J.

Budget-friendly options: Tent camping at Pittsfield City Lake offers good value. "Real nice campground with bathrooms and showers. Only $5 to tent camp here!" reports Whiskey B., though they warn about mosquitoes.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Buena Vista Farms, sites vary in noise level. "If you don't want to hear traffic I suggest getting a spot in the back. The part is a decent size we really didn't hear it until the morning," advises Sonia Nathan B.

Electric service reliability: During peak usage times, electrical systems can be strained. At Sangchris Lake State Park, one camper reported, "The electricity couldn't meet the demand and a transformer blew," though they added that "the campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation."

Hookup locations: Check your electric cord length before setting up. "The electric and water hookups on some sites, at least ours, was at the back and on the wrong side. Our electric cord just reached the post," shares Ray & Terri F. about their experience at Pittsfield City Lake.
