Best RV Parks & Resorts near Woodson, IL

Several RV campgrounds near Woodson, Illinois provide full hookup options for motorhome travelers. The Double J Campground and RV Park in Chatham offers year-round access with both 30 and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer connections on spacious pull-through sites. "Nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere," noted one camper about the sites at Double J. Country Bend Campground in Litchfield features full hookup sites with 30-amp service, operating from April through November, though some reviews indicate tight spacing for larger rigs. Kamper Kompanion RV Park provides seasonal camping from March 15 to October 31 with electric, water, and sewer hookups in a location convenient to Interstate 55.

Most RV parks in the region require advance reservations, particularly during summer weekends and fall foliage season. Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds, with Springfield KOA offering reliable AT&T coverage while Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area experiences inconsistent connectivity with speeds between 0.15 to 0.75 MB/s. Dump stations are available at most parks, though Illinois State Fair Campground's facility lacks a hose hookup for rinsing tanks. Pet-friendly policies are common throughout the area, with Kamper Kompanion specifically mentioned for having a dedicated dog yard. Many campgrounds feature level gravel pads, though several reviews note deceptively uneven sites requiring significant leveling for larger motorhomes, particularly at state park campgrounds.

    Pere Marquette State Park Campground

    Great Terrain for Illinois

This park has great hiking for Illinois. The campground has 88 sites total1-85 are either 30 amp or 50 amp electric sites. These are the class A sites $20 a night, they also have about 15 Class C sites for tents with no electric for $8 a night. The campground is doing some upgrades as of October 2017 and probably will be adding more 50 amp, water and sewer to some sites. There is also intel that says they are adding more sites plus more tent camping sites.

I camped in a motorhome and did not try to fight the crowd for the shower house. It is a busy campground, but I did visit in the summer busy season, so it may have less traffic in the fall. There are great hiking trails and the scenic drive to the park by the Mississippi and Illinois rivers is worth the trip alone.

I will return here for hiking for sure! I had some good luck fishing in the river near here too.

    Country Bend Campground

    Great experience!

Big things happening at Country Bend Campgrounds in Montrgromy Co, IL. This beautiful campground has many things to offer and is only a few minutes from the local drive in movie theater in Litchfield Illinois. It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf, and so much more. This family run business is under new management and is welcoming new seasonal campers and day campers with competitive pricing. This beautiful campground is nestled in a scenic area in the country and is pet friendly. It has clean shower houses with warm water. We just purchased our seasonal campsite earlier in the season. Come check out this amazing campground and all it has to offer! Our rough collies will be joining us at this dog friendly campground! There is always something to do here and the owners strive to make it a family place by providing many activities on the weekends. The owners have done an amazing job on this campground and have made it one of the best campgrounds around to create that lasting experience with our children before they grow up!!!

    Country Bend Campground

    GO ELSEWHERE

Our motorhome is a big rig a 42 foot diesel pusher.. They squeezed site was 7 ft wide with little gravel mostly wet grass and mud.Our 40000 lb RV was 8 1/2"ft wide. We were put in a spot by Country Bend Campground not large enough for our vehicle. Not much gravel all mud. Due to a huge tree no satellite service yet the owners stated was good for our 42 ft diesel pusher motorhome and no obstacles. We were sandwiched between two living full time people right next to us. We waited 3 hours to come in since they charge$5 an hour extra for early arrival. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!$$$$ is their goal. They want you to rent their golf carts because everything is so spread out. We have been full timing for two years. This is the worst experience we ever had. No water hookup. We called Kate Tuxhorn the owner and she said sorry i forgot to tell you that you have to tap in your neighbors water. Her husband Jeff Tuxhorn has many bad reviews too.Leaving we hit that huge tree that we had no way to turn. Thousands of$ damage.

The Double J Campground and RV Park

    Beautiful place!

Beautiful place! We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the next two nights. Arrived just before the office closed at 5:45pm. The campground area past the office is electronically gated and registrants receive a scannable card for entry. Once we had scanned and entered through the gate they escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site. The campsites are nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Our site had a picnic table and a small fire ring. Full hookups worked fine.

The campground is next to a large corn field that has recently been cut; I suspect during the growing/harvest season there may be dust and noise from equipment, and perhaps overspray from any chemicals that are dusted on it. This time of year it was nice and quiet. The noise from the highway bordering both cornfield and campground, however, was loud and constant.

Bathrooms were clean and aerated by large fans which were loud but effective.

We would definitely stay here again.

    Pere Marquette State Park Campground

The bonus is the fried chicken

Great little campground just outside of Grafton, Illinois, on the Mississippi River. The campground is located in an open grove of old trees. There were owls when we were there. In winter there are a lot of eagles feeding in the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers which meet at the park. The Lewis & Clark expedition started nearby. Most of the sites were fairly level, but I didn’t see any pull through sites. Lots of hiking trails, and the lodge has one of the best fried chicken dinners around on Sunday.

    Great River Road Campground

    Good enough for an overnight

No frills camping on the edge of the fairgrounds, there are campsites mostly for RV’s (full hook ups- 50 amp and 30 amp, and sites with sewer), and space for tents on the margins (might be why tent “sites” are free). The bathhouse was locked when I passed through, and no one was camping here, but there is an emergency number to call, so I guess if I had wanted to camp here I could have had someone come out and unlock the bathhouse for me. The town is a short walk away with a convenience store and not much else, but still cute. Don’t expect any privacy or shade here as there are no trees.

Lincolns New Salem Historic Site Campground

    Great area

We loved this campground. Was all paved sites and roads. Pretty level sites. Utilities harder to get to but all in all a great family campground. Pet friendly. Not 5 stars since we had to leave a day early due to weather. Not their fault but sites became a lake and couldn’t even step outside. Barely any AT&T service. Couldn’t use phone as hotspot at all.

    Springfield KOA

    Very quiet

This KOA is in a rural area. The signage to get there was very good, plus we had our GPS to help out. This area is QUIET! No trains, no interstate noise. It was great after a long day traveling. Bathrooms/showers are very clean& decorated nicely. Staff was courteous. Our site was fine. This KOA has many family activities, including a pool, mini golf, jumping pillow& a huge field for the kids to play. Cell service was fine.

Only bad thing- While checking in, the lady told me we couldn't use our sewer. She said the whole row was backing up. Since the dump station was also in this line, we couldn't dump. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I talked my husband out of dumping when we left the state park we were at because we were going to a KOA with a full hookup site! We camped at Springfield KOA Journey in a Travel Trailer.

Guide to Woodson

Camping near Woodson, Illinois offers several recreational options beyond standard RV sites. Located in central Illinois's prairie region with elevations ranging from 600-700 feet, the area experiences distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters. Most campgrounds operate from April through October, though the Double J Campground remains open year-round for campers seeking winter accommodations.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Prairie Lake at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area provides excellent shore fishing. "Nice warm bath house had push button showers with locks on the stalls with a dry space to dress inside the stall. Lake has boat dock with about 6 slips," notes one visitor to the wildlife area.

Mini golf and games: Several campgrounds offer recreational activities beyond hiking. "This beautiful campground has many things to offer and is only a few minutes from the local drive in movie theater in Litchfield Illinois. It has a pool, swing sets, playground, cabins, ponds with stocked fish, beautiful walking trails, camping, welcome center, baseball field, volleyball, games, horseshoes, paddle boats, miniature golf," shares one camper at Country Bend Campground.

Visit historic sites: The Springfield area offers significant Lincoln historical attractions. "Short drive 2.5 miles to Lincoln home. 1 mile from Lincoln's Tomb," explains a visitor to Illinois State Fair Campground, making it convenient for history enthusiasts.

What campers like

Quiet locations away from highways: Many travelers appreciate secluded campgrounds for overnight stays. "Just off the highway, but minimal noise. Clean. Well maintained. Pleasant staff. We had a long pull through, but there are a limited number of those," notes a camper at Kamper Kompanion RV Park.

Well-maintained facilities: Clean bathrooms consistently receive positive mentions. "Very clean and quiet. There is a lot of shade in the main part of the park. It has a huge pool, putt-putt golf, and washer and dryers," reports a visitor at The Double J Campground and RV Park.

Lakefront camping: Water access ranks high among camper preferences. "We are enjoying our stay at Hickory Point Campground Lot 23 at Sangchris Lake State Park. Sites are spacious and campground is quiet and leisurely during the week. Beautiful shoreline lots," shares one reviewer at Sangchris Lake State Park Campground.

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the region close during winter months. "We camped here in June of 2017," notes a visitor to Pere Marquette State Park Campground, highlighting the importance of checking seasonal availability.

Advance planning for premium sites: Lakefront spots fill quickly during peak season. "If you want a lake spot, make a reservation way in advance," advises a camper at Sangchris Lake State Park Campground.

Variable site quality: Be prepared for potential leveling challenges at some locations. "The campground has 2 loops. Clean bathrooms with showers. Choice of full hookup or just electric on outer perimeters of each loop," explains a visitor at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area.

Dump station limitations: Some facilities lack complete dump station setups. "The dump station does not have hose hook up for water. There is water but you can't hook a hose to it. That needs to be fixed as you can't wash down your spills or rinse your tank," notes a camper at Illinois State Fair Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Activities for children: Select campgrounds with specific child-friendly amenities. "Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes," shares a visitor to Springfield KOA.

Cabin options: For families new to camping, several locations offer cabins. "We rented two cabins for the weekend and loved the place. Cabins were modern and clean overlooking the pond. They offer kayaks, canoes, and peddle boats free to campers," notes a visitor to Buena Vista Farms Campground.

Safety considerations: Many campgrounds feature regular security patrols. "Clean, beautiful urban camp. Great thick grass carpet spots if you want. Great level paved pads if you want. Friendly checking, friendly security driving around all night," reports a camper at Illinois State Fair Campground.

Tips from RVers

Site access challenges: Some campgrounds have narrow entrance roads. "Lots of wonderful signs directing you to the campground once you exit the interstate. The roads leading to the campground are narrow, luckily we didn't encounter someone coming the other way!" warns a visitor to Springfield KOA.

Hookup reliability: Check for seasonal limitations on water access. "Electric only but water available and nice dump station. All sites at Hickory Point very close to lake. Several fishing docks in campground," explains a visitor to Sangchris Lake State Park.

Pricing considerations: Rates vary significantly between state and private campgrounds. "For the price you should be able to do more with it," mentions a camper at The Double J Campground regarding WiFi service, highlighting that amenities don't always match the higher rates at private rv campgrounds near Woodson, Illinois.
