Campgrounds near South Elgin, Illinois range from forest preserves to lakeside recreation areas within a 30-mile radius. Paul Wolff Campground at Burnidge Forest Preserve offers tent and RV sites with electric hookups and water access just minutes from town. Other established options include Blackwell Family Campground in Warrenville and Camp Reinberg in Palatine, which features cabin accommodations alongside traditional camping areas. Most campgrounds in the region operate seasonally, with the majority open from May through October when weather conditions are most favorable for outdoor recreation.

Reservations are required at most developed campgrounds in the area, with booking windows opening several months in advance through county forest preserve district websites or the Illinois state reservation system. Electric hookups are common at established sites, though amperage varies between campgrounds. Water access points are typically shared, and dump stations are available at larger facilities. The camping season generally runs from spring through fall, with few year-round options available. Weather considerations include hot, humid summers and occasional severe thunderstorms. A review of Blackwell Family Campground noted, "They have discounted rates for Dupage county residents and have electric at all sites and great prices for firewood. Sites are level and clean and they have modern bathrooms."

The forest preserve campgrounds provide a natural escape despite their proximity to suburban areas. Big Rock Campground offers year-round access with electric hookups and water, though reviews indicate limited shade in some areas. Camp Reinberg receives high ratings for its cabin options and proximity to hiking trails. Campers frequently mention the convenience of these locations for weekend getaways from Chicago. Several visitors note the contrast between the developed nature of these campgrounds and the surrounding suburban landscape. As one camper described Paul Wolff Campground, "This is a typical Illinois state park. Not well taken care of. Positive is the lake." Water features are consistently highlighted as key attractions, with fishing opportunities available at several locations including Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area, which one reviewer called a "wooded oasis in the midst of corn patches."

      Rolling Oaks Campground

Old-School Camping with a Whole Lot of Personality

Rolling Oaks is one of those wonderfully old-school Midwestern campgrounds that feels less like an RV resort and more like a little summer community that has been evolving for generations out here in the rich corn patches of central IL. Family-run since 1969, the sprawling, shady property sits along the Fox River with its very own lake and a decidedly RV-centric personality, where curb appeal is just as important (if not more) than the actual mobile confines people are living in. A substantial portion of the campground is occupied by long-term and seasonal residents, complete with patios, sheds and occasionally elaborate outdoor entertaining spaces, which gives Rolling Oaks an unusual neighborhood feel rather than the transient atmosphere of most CGs.

While my earlier review goes into considerably more detail, I thought I’d revisit this campground with a quick topline of HIGHS and LOWS along with a fresh batch of photos.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Water is the star here, with a swimming lake, pool and direct access to the Fox River making this particularly appealing if you bring kayaks, canoes or tubes; (2) Plenty of shade and a mixture of full-hookup, partial-hookup and pull-through RV sites plus tent camping accommodate just about every style of camper; (3) Playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoes and a game room give kids plenty to do without leaving the property; (4) Summer weekends have an almost throwback campground-community atmosphere with dancing, cart rides, farmers’ markets, spaghetti dinners, corn boils and pig roasts; and (5) Being only a few miles from the village of Sandwich makes supplies easy while putting you in prime position for the enormously popular Sandwich Fair (if you manage to time your stay here to coincide with this annual attraction).

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The large population of seasonal and long-term campers means portions of Rolling Oaks can feel more like a permanent RV neighborhood than a campground; (2) All that community activity means summer weekends aren't exactly designed for campers seeking solitude and P&Q; and (3) The CGs sprawling layout means the experience can vary considerably depending upon where you land with front sections feel busier and more transient, while areas farther back become increasingly more residential.

Insider’s Tip: For the best balance of scenery, shade and quiet, head toward the far side of the lake, away from the busiest weekend activity. And if you're thinking of bringing a kayak or canoe, definitely bring it as direct Fox River access is one of Rolling Oaks' biggest advantages.

      Happy Camping!

      Pearl Lake

      Late night party central

The park is beautiful. The water is beautiful. They say it's a gated community, but it's open to the public 9 to 5 daily. At twenty five dollars per person. And then on friday and saturday night, the locals that park here for the summer start their party central including karaoke at the camper next door, and several others. I've never had a camcround with that loud of parties. And it's a weekend event. I like hearing and seeing people having fun but when the manager extends the curfew for the parties she's at (they kind of party hop), it starts to affect the enjoyment of the park. If we had to stay, we'd stay in the S## sites in the back, where you don't hear so much of the partying. And then during the day, the rules began. Kind of like the soup nazi.

Prairie View — Chain O' Lakes State Park

      A lot to do.

There’s a lot of things to do out here. We did some hiking with our boy. The site we were at was maintained. It’s a nice place to go camping.

Honeysuckle Hollow — Chain O' Lakes State Park

Lively Little Campground Beside Turner Lake

There’s something wonderfully EZ about camping where the kids can wander down toward the water and suddenly the whole weekend seems to slow down ... and that’s the entire charm of Honeysuckle Hollow. Here at Chain O’Lakes State Park, Honeysuckle Hollow is the largest and most wide open of the park’s camping areas, with electric sites geared particularly well toward RV families, although the tradeoff is noticeably less shade and almost zero privacy between nearly every campsite, compared with neighboring Fox Den, which offers up much more seclusion and shade. The greatest asset here is undoubtedly the direct access to Turner Lake (although you could also have direct access over at Turner Lake South), giving families an EZ place to fish, paddle or simply explore the shoreline, while electric hookups, picnic tables, grills and a nearby restroom/shower building keep the actual camping comfortably simple. We especially loved those unhurried moments when the boys could wander toward the lake while dinner was getting started and everyone seemed perfectly happy just being outside together. The shower facility here is convenient, although we found it just slightly more dilapidated conditions than the bathhouse located closer to Fox Den. From what we saw, I’d choose one of the better-spaced sites toward the Turner Lake side of the campground, where EZ water access helps compensate for Honeysuckle’s limited privacy. I’d recommend Honeysuckle for families who value electricity, lake access and a lively campground atmosphere, particularly if having Turner Lake practically in your backyard matters more than having your neighbors hidden behind the trees.  One point to note is that the pier was in an advanced state of disrepair and so we were not able to fully maximize this particular amenity - so if accessing Turner Lake is important to you and your family, we would recommend calling ahead to verify the condition of the pier.

Rock Cut State Park - Staghorn Campground

Perfect for an overnight stop when travelling through I-90 & Rockford Ill

We are traveling mid week in September so did not make advanced reservations. The registration booth attendant assigned us site 506. (We were not permitted to drive through to pick our own location before registering). Our site was grassy and a bit muddy after some significant rains, but it was cozy with trees and tall brush on all sides. Pit toilets at each loop with a shower building just 5 minute walk away. You can hear the din of the highway about .5 miles away, but an easy place to stay if you are traveling through. Electricity on site, water spigots nearby and dump station near the entrance.

      Cross country travelers

Last minute online reservation...They only have. 4 or 5 RV sites...full hook ups...about $60+-...right near gas pumps but any noise did not bother us weary travelers...Only downside was showers were not included....For the price certainly an included shower should be part of the deal...easy check in and check out.,..We used the Love's site due to its location to visit family and the fact that electric was available...We have medical equipment that requires a recharge at night plus it's just nice to have the AC if needed.

Adeline Jay-Geo Karis Illinois Beach State Park

      Simple and local

Simple campsite. We should have brought some leveling blocks, But otherwise my wife and I enjoyed the site for our rental RV. Short 10 minute walk to Lake Michigan. The camp store is fairly robust with friendly people working there. I appreciate that there are 2 lanes for dump/fill stations. My wife and I would absolutely stay here again.

      Escape to Nature

      Simply Lovely

We had a truly enjoyable stay and would’ve stayed an extra day if our travel schedule would’ve allowed. David was a wonderful host. Greeted us with a smile and escorted us to our site. We had our choice of 2 spots, both lovely. Picnic table and plenty of FREE firewood to keep us cozy. Wild turkeys roamed the grounds as well as the friendly ducks. All in all, a very peaceful evening and a special place.

      Thousand Trails Pine Country

      A Nice, Quiet RV Park

Stayed with Thousand Trails. It's mostly an annual park, but they've got about 20 TT sites. They've got a clean pool, good size. And a clubhouse that's open til 9pm. Laundry & trash dumpsters nearby. Full hook ups. We enjoyed our stay.

    Guide to South Elgin

Camping sites near South Elgin, Illinois operate within a continental climate zone characterized by humid summers and cold winters, with most rainfall occurring between April and September. The surrounding area features rolling terrain with elevations ranging from 750-850 feet above sea level. Seasonal flooding can affect campground access, particularly in spring when Fox River levels rise following snowmelt.

    What to do

Hiking diverse trails: Thomas Woods Campground offers varied terrain for all skill levels. "The trails through the grounds are varied and long--you can find something to suit just about any preference for suburban midwest hiking. There are plenty of paved trails as well as dirt, lots of fun little off-shoots into the woods, creeks run throughout, and there's even a little up-and-down thanks to ice age glaciers," according to Kristy G.

Kayaking on multiple waterways: Camp Bullfrog Lake provides rental equipment right on site. "The kayaks are $15 and hour and include life vests. The lake is pretty small but it was fun to putter around," says Layla P. The calm waters make this spot ideal for beginners or families.

Mountain biking trail networks: Several campsites connect to dedicated biking paths. "What's great about this location is the access to the miles and mile of MTB and hiking trails just out the front step of your campsite," notes Josh M. from Camp Bullfrog Lake. "We live 15 minutes away so like to take midweek camping trips to break up the work week."

    What campers like

Large, accessible sites: Big Rock Campground provides spacious camping areas with good amenities. "Nice campground with big, level sites. Even though they don't take reservations, there is plenty of space and availability," writes Melissa C. The campground operates year-round with water and electric hookups.

Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and common areas. "The shower facilities were clean and the staff very friendly," notes Laura Z. about Camp Reinberg. Others mention the attention to detail: "The bathroom/shower/laundry rooms were all very clean and well maintained," says Rose F.

Weekend accessibility: Many sites operate with limited schedules but provide quality experiences. "Limited to weekend camping, but spread out private-like tent sites. Camp hosts are super engaged and seem to love being caretakers," reports Marisa A. about Thomas Woods Campground. "Hand pumps for water and well-kept pit toilets. Hiking galore!"

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking. "This campground is very well maintained with all the amenities you could need... Cook County residents get a nice discount, as do veterans. Rates go up on the weekends. A one week limit for all stays unless you get approval from higher-ups," explains Kelsey G. about Camp Reinberg.

Shade limitations: Newer campgrounds lack mature trees. "This is a pretty new camp site, so the trees need some time to get big enough to provide some shade," notes David W. about Big Rock Campground. "The flush toilet building was very clean, but there was no TP in the ladies' room. And I have to wonder why you would build a new campground without showers?"

Water access varies: Paul Wolff Campground has specific requirements for water hookups. "We like this campground because its close to home and its clean/large campsites. But there aren't any showers and you need to pay with cash or check. No credit cards," states Tara M. At other sites, the distance to water can be challenging: "The water hookups are kind of far from the individual sites (make sure you have extra hose)," advises Rodney D.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Blackwell Family Campground offers dedicated recreation areas. "The grounds include a lake for boating, hiking trails, and bike paths. There is also an archery range, and some ranger programs. Very nice," shares Jen E. These activities help keep children engaged throughout your stay.

Weekend programming: Several campgrounds offer scheduled activities. "Staff was very friendly. Easy access to nice hiking trails. Bathrooms and showers decent," reports Nomad Nurse Z. Another camper mentioned special events: "Free firewood and you can purchase more for just $5," notes Leo V. about Camp Reinberg.

Group camping options: Blackwell has designated areas for larger parties. "Each group site has a nice cooking area and open space for tents. We had a group of about 20 kids plus moms and dads, so we grabbed three sites in the same area. This made for a great private space for our pack: three areas to prep meals or crafts and plenty of space on the perimeter for tents, leaving open room to play," explains John R.

    Tips from RVers

Electrical considerations: Rock Cut State Park offers various hookup options. "RV spots are concrete, flat, and easy to get into," reports Kelsey G. However, some campers note infrastructure challenges: "The water hookup is far behind camping pad - bring extensions!"

Price variations: Costs depend on residency status and amenities. "It's expensive, for what is there, if you are not a Kane County resident. There appears to be some equestrian space and trails," says Jeff G. about Big Rock Campground. Non-residents should budget accordingly for higher fees.

Winter camping availability: Several sites remain open year-round. "We camp here at least 5 times a year. It's only 8 miles from our home. Many trails and not too expensive. They have sites with electric and sites just for tents," explains Kevin C. about Rock Cut State Park, noting the "only negative is no drinkable water."
