Dense woods surround the tent sites at Thomas Woods Campground, where many spots require a short walk from parking areas through the trees. The McHenry County Conservation District operates this seasonal campground within Marengo Ridge 5, offering both electric and water hookups for RVs alongside walk-in tent platforms.
Campers consistently note the privacy created by the thick forest canopy, though Scott N. observes that "some people think if they can't see you, you can't hear them." The tent sites feature raised gravel platforms that keep campers level, though the small stones can track into gear. Site 30 sits less than a tenth of a mile from parking, while other walk-in spots offer even more seclusion deeper in the woods.
Multiple trail systems wind through both wooded and prairie sections of the preserve. The 3.5-mile paved H.U.M. Trail provides forest views, while dirt hiking paths offer nearly two hours of exploration according to visitor reports. An equestrian trail system accommodates horseback riders, and winter skiing is available when conditions permit.
Hand-pump water stations distribute iron-heavy well water, and pit toilets serve the campground rather than flush facilities. The one-way road system requires driving through the entire loop to return to sites after visiting the dumpster near the entrance. Firewood delivery to sites costs $5 per bundle through advance reservation. Mosquitoes reach intense levels during summer months, making bug spray essential for any outdoor activities.
The campground operates weekends only from early May through late October, with reservations available online. For those wanting full-service amenities, Chicago Northwest KOA provides showers and additional facilities six miles southeast.
