Randolph County State Recreation Area's clean campsites provide tent and RV options with full pet accommodation across 1,101 acres northeast of Chester. Both Pine Ridge and main campground loops allow pets with standard leash requirements, though sites are notably close together with limited privacy between neighbors. The park features electric hookups, water fill stations, and a dump station for RV campers with pets. Campers describe the grounds as well-maintained with nicely mowed grass and tall shade trees throughout the pet-accessible areas. Fort Kaskaskia State Park Campground similarly welcomes pets with 32 electric sites and stunning Mississippi River views. Lake Campalot and Perryville RV Resort round out the nearby pet-friendly options, both providing full hookup sites and pet-friendly policies for campers with dogs.

Paved walking trails throughout the recreation areas provide excellent pet exercise opportunities. The trail at Kaskaskia Lock and Dam is wheelchair accessible and leads to the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers, making an ideal spot for dogs needing daily walks. Fishing access points allow campers to bring leashed pets along while enjoying the water, though swimming areas typically prohibit dogs. Camping with pets during fall offers particularly scenic experiences with colorful foliage around Fort Kaskaskia. Sites fill quickly during summer weekends, especially at Randolph County where the limited availability of shaded, pet-accessible sites means advance reservations are recommended for RV campers traveling with dogs. Most campgrounds maintain standard quiet hours, helping ensure barking doesn't disturb neighboring campsites.

      Randolph County State Recreation Area

      Nice quaint campground

This is a great little campground with a fishing lake. Sites are gravel but well maintained. Sites are fairly close with most shaded. Getting around is a little right for bigger rigs but still doable as long as you’re careful. Make sure you fill up at the dump station before you get to the campground because there’s no easy way to turn around if you miss it. It’s approximately a mile before the campground on your left. Be aware that there are no showers though, only bathrooms. Fifty-one Class BE campsites, 95 Class C campsites, an equestrian site with eight stalls for horses, and four Class D (primitive) campsites are available throughout the area. A group camp area has its own shelter, stone fireplace, electricity and tables. Some campsites at Randolph County SRA can be reserved online through Reserve America at www.reserveamerica.com Randolph County State Recreation Area is a mecca for outdoor recreational activities. Marion Campground & RV Park

Would come back as a last resort...

This is a stop-over type of campground. The sites are very close together with no privacy. There are some pull-thru sites, which is convenient. It is right next to interstate 57, so unless you're inside your camper, you'll definitely be listening to the highway. This is a pet-friendly campground, and they have a little dog park. They have a shower/laundry facility which is also convenient, especially if you're out on a big trip. Overall, it's certainly not a bad campground, but the highway noise really bothered us.

Good place for a quick stop

Not a bad place for a stop between destinations or a couple days at the lake would be fine. Roads and sites were well maintained. The dog park gets muddy quick, it’s mostly moss and dirt. It’s close to the Interstate; we’d stay there again.

      St. Francois State Park Campground

      St. Francois

We had a beautiful campsite with soft grassy ground. We did have a mole or something burrowing around so you had to watch for loose dirt clods but that was NBD. The site had a picnic table and fire ring. There were pit toilets, no showers. Spigots throughout the area. Within walking distance of the river and trail access. Beautiful hiking on the bluffs above the river. The hosts were really friendly. There was also a very cute and very friendly kitty running around the area hunting grasshoppers. He hung out for some pets and cuddles then wandered off for some more adventure. I kind of want to be that cat. ^_^

      The Landing Point RV Park

Real nice RV Park with easy access

Real nice RV park orientated toward rigs of all sizes. Easy to navigate the roads, with every site level concrete. ATT & Verizon both worked fine. Wifi & cable included in the price. 10% discount for Good Sam, military & seniors. Right off a hiway (W) and a bit noisey, but all in all a nice park, especially for a night over. Sites are reasonably spaced, many with large trees. Not real far off 55. Would stay here again for a nioght ofer and even an extra night. They also have a dog park area.

      Nice little lake

This campground is located on a small lake in Southern Illinois and managed by the department of natural resources. Good place for Camping, fishing, hiking, picnicking and boating. Cahokia RV Parque

Nice close park to St. Louis

Pet-friendly, full hookups, space for our larger rig and parking around for extra vehicle. Laundry and propane on site. Spaces were a little close together, but minutes from downtown St. Louis, and staff was friendly and accommodating. Also, fantastic restaurant right on site -- Sawmill BBQ!

      Washington State Park Campground

      The perfect park

We absolutely love this park. It’s just under an hour from St. Louis, with river access, amazing hiking trails & great views. Very clean campsites with lots of shade for tent campers & nice level lots. There is even a swimming pool if the river isn’t your thing & a couple playgrounds too. There is a dollar general right outside the park entrance which is super convenient if you forget something or your lighter runs out of fluid like us lol. They have cabins to rents as well as Camper spots and basic lots. Pet friendly! Highly recommend this park. The whole family enjoyed staying here.

    Guide to Chester

Randolph County State Recreation Area sits on 1,101 acres of rolling hill country in southern Illinois about five miles northeast of Chester. The recreation area features a 65-acre fishing lake completed in 1961, with camping options located across well-shaded grounds. Camping near Chester provides access to both Mississippi River views and wooded sites, with temperatures averaging 78°F during summer camping season and 40°F during spring and fall.

    What to do

Hiking accessible trails: The paved trail at Kaskaskia Jerry F. Costello Lock and Dam offers wheelchair-friendly walking with river views. "This trail is paved for walking, bicycles and wheelchairs. There is a hiking trail through the woods that ends at the confluence of the Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers," notes Susan D. from Kaskaskia River Lock and Dam Recreation Area.

Fishing in multiple locations: Anglers find good catches near Chester, particularly at Turkey Bayou where the water access is convenient. "This simple, FREE campground is in a beautiful location by the Big Muddy River... What this campground does have is beauty, a lake, and the Big Muddy River nearby," writes Shari G. at Turkey Bayou Campground. Seasonal fish include catfish, crappie, bass and sauger.

Playgrounds for children: Multiple recreation areas feature kid-friendly play spaces within walking distance of campsites. At Randolph County State Recreation Area, "Easy walk to the lake with a gorgeous view, 2 different playgrounds walkable distance from campground," reports Shirlee A.

    What campers like

Affordable camping options: Several campgrounds offer low-cost or free camping within 30 minutes of Chester. "This campground provides large spots, drinking water, vault toilets, dumpsters, picnic table, lantern hook, fire ring, and contactless check in. I also appreciate the value of these sites. It really is a reasonable rate for forest camping," says Tabitha R. from Johnson Creek Recreation Area.

Historical features: Fort Kaskaskia State Park Campground offers access to significant historical sites. "Fort Kaskaskia State Historic Site is located on the remains of historic Fort Kaskaskia, constructed by the French in the 1700s to defend the town of Kaskaskia. Founded in 1703, the town was a central commercial center," explains Joel R. The historic cemetery and overlook areas provide additional points of interest.

Seasonal color changes: Fall camping provides exceptional natural beauty in the region. "Stayed here last fall and really loved the fall colors and views this park has to offer... Suggest checking it out in the fall when the leaves are changing as it was absolutely gorgeous," recommends Gonzo A. about Fort Kaskaskia State Park.

    What you should know

Water access varies: While many campgrounds advertise water access, swimming options are limited. At Turkey Bayou, one camper notes, "Great place near water (I wouldn't swim in it lol)." Most water access is primarily for fishing and scenery rather than recreation.

Highway proximity: Some campgrounds near Chester are situated close to major roadways. "The highway is also extremely close and can be heard at all times," reports Jamey W. about Perryville RV Resort.

Seasonal variations: Hawn State Park Campground offers different experiences depending on when you visit. "Hawn is a one of the best fall campgrounds close to the St. Louis area. There are a number of hiking options around the campground in the park and nearby nature reserve," writes Cody S., highlighting the benefits of off-peak visits.

    Tips for camping with families

Book weekday trips: During peak summer months, campgrounds fill quickly on weekends. Weekday camping provides more space and quieter conditions. "Mid week stay. Great pads for our little tear drop, easy access. Pit toilets could have been cleaner, but fine. Quiet. Clean," shares Helena and Kyle R.

Consider private options: For families needing additional amenities, Perryville RV Resort By Rjourney offers more developed facilities. "The property itself is beautiful. Spots are intermingled in the trees and it is spectacular in the morning. The pool is better then most hotels and the giant trampoline looked like it would be my daughters favorite thing," notes Jamey W.

Watch for wildlife: Multiple pet-friendly campgrounds around Chester feature animal sightings kids will enjoy. "The nature is beautiful and cute little forest bunnies running around!" mentions Shirlee A. about her experience with toddlers at Randolph County State Recreation Area.

    Tips from RVers

Site spacing challenges: Many campgrounds near Chester feature sites placed close together. "The RV sites are very close together, so don't expect privacy or quiet days/evenings at least in the Pine Ridge campground—not sure about the other campgrounds," warns Rachael G.

Access considerations: Several campgrounds have challenging access roads or entrances. "Getting around is a little right for bigger rigs but still doable as long as you're careful. Make sure you fill up at the dump station before you get to the campground because there's no easy way to turn around if you miss it," advises J K. about Randolph County State Recreation Area.

Reservation options: For RVers seeking pet-friendly camping near Chester, Illinois, the reservation systems vary by location. At Lake Campalot, the staff makes site selection personal: "The staff (Sharon) was so helpful. She took us to several sites she had to make sure we were happy with our spot," shares Amy H.
