South Marcum Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing, boating, and swimming on Rend Lake draw campers to South Marcum Campground, a US Army Corps of Engineers facility near Benton, Illinois, with more than 100 reservable sites spread across multiple loops. Some sites sit directly on the water, while others are tucked into wooded sections farther from the shoreline. Site 56, noted by several visitors, occupies the tip of a point with open sightlines over the lake and reasonable separation from neighboring sites. Campers looking at places to camp around Rend Lake will find South Marcum among the larger and more developed options in the area.

The layout gives most sites enough space that neighbors don't feel immediately adjacent, and RV pads are paved and generally level, though site 49 has been flagged as difficult to level without extra blocking. Hookup availability varies by site: some have full electric, water, and sewer, while others, including sites 86 and some in certain loops, have electric only. AT&T cell service runs at roughly two bars LTE, which is workable but not reliable. Matt M. notes the bathrooms are "nice and clean," an observation repeated across multiple reviews.

One consistent trade-off is highway noise. I-57 runs close enough that traffic sound carries overnight, especially on still nights. A train line and occasional aircraft add to the ambient noise. The campground road crosses the dam on the way in, where deer sightings are common. The Whispering Pines loop includes a playground, and bathhouses with hot showers are available throughout the property. Pet-friendly camping near Rend Lake is the norm here, as pets are welcome throughout South Marcum.

Nearby alternatives worth considering include Spillway Group Area to the west and Benton KOA to the south, which suits campers who prefer a private campground setup. South Marcum's season runs from late March through early November, with nightly rates from $16 to $44 depending on hookup type. Those with a federal senior pass can access sites at half price. Reservations are available and worth making early for lakeside sites, particularly on summer weekends.

Great

Full hook up. Level. Parked in large trees. Concerned we might not be able to get our slide out, but it was okay. Shaded. Great water views. Lots of boat activity. Gave we “party cove” vibes. But family friend party cove.

Great place

Lovely lake. If you have an E-bike, you can ride MILES around the lower portion of the lake.
We were in spot 57. Spectacular views of the lake. Lots of trees. Large spaces. Nice concrete picnic table. But boy oh boy was this space unlevel. We were down 13 inches low in the back. The best we could get it was 6 inches off. A camper may not be as much an issue… but a class A, it’s rough.

Beautiful lake views

This is a beautiful campground with sites right on the lake. Each spot has an extra parking spot. The sites are very wide and there are many loops. It is an Army Corp campground so the price was only $22, but if you have a senior pass it is $11. Very quiet, but you can occasionally hear the expressway.

If I was in any other spot this would probably be a 4/5, but spot 56 has a crazy lake view and is on the tip of an outlook with pretty nice privacy!

Great Campground

Only $26 a night for full-hookups is amazing. Cell service for AT&T is marginal at 2 bars LTE. Only issue that I have is that site 49 is very hard to get level in, make sure that you bring extra leveling blocks if possible

Convenient to I-57

South Marcum Campground is a Corp of Engineers campground just of I-57 in southern Illinois with over 100 reservable campsites. Sites have 30 & 50 amp Electric hookups. There is a dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, and drinking. Also a playground in the Whispering Pines loop. The campground is on Rend Lake with swimming, fishing and boating. Most sites are level. Some are pull-through. The sites are set up to provide some privacy, and are not right on top of each other.

Pretty but..

I really enjoyed the drive in for this one- crossed the dam, saw tons of deer, fairly large so lots of sites but descent space between them. The view off the lake at sunset was beautiful! However, our site didn’t have water hook up which I though let it should (some did, some didn’t so maybe just missed on my end). Our site was pretty trashed from the people prior and the fire was actually still burning. And heard the highway sounds all. night. long. I thought we were far enough away but not the case. Also had a train, some planes, and neighbors were up very early. It was a pretty campground for sure but overall not an enjoyable experience.

Pretty Nice Lakeside CG

This is a very nice Corps of Engineers campground. The RV sites are paved and pretty level. Tent sites look nice too. Bathrooms are nice and clean. Didn’t use the shower facilities. The lake has a lot of boats flying around, but it’s placid after dark. Bugs weren’t bad at all.

No water or sewer hookups on Site 86.

Have fun!

Looking forward to a return trip

We only spent one night on our way back home, but can’t wait to go back. The campground gives campers plenty of room to spread out, lots of open space for the kids to play, and not crowded when we stopped by late July. We are looking forward to a return trip to do some more exploring around the lake.

Best campground on Rend Lake!

This is hands-down the nicest campground on Rend Lake. With hundreds of sites to choose from with some being tucked into the woods and others sitting right on the lake including some walking intense fights this campground is one of the nicest that you’ll find in Illinois. Plenty of bathrooms and bath houses as well as playgrounds and spacious campsites for larger RVs and plenty of access to the lake.

Nice and quiet

These sites are pretty run of the mill average camping sites. They're very close to the Illinois state fair grounds. There are tent sites as well as RV sites that are very close to the lake.
