Silver Creek West Access Area

Sitting alongside Silver Creek just off Highway 20 near Picabo, this free dispersed camping area is managed by Idaho Fish and Game and draws anglers, overnighters, and travelers using it as a staging stop before Craters of the Moon. There are no designated sites, but several rock fire rings are scattered across flat, mostly level ground, and a vault toilet is on-site. Access is via a dirt road with some bumps but no significant potholes, and at least one reviewer towing a 30-foot toy hauler had no trouble getting in and out.

Camping directly next to the creek is possible, and dogs are permitted. Mosquitoes can be intense, particularly in summer, so come prepared. Cell coverage is workable on Verizon and AT&T, though data speeds on the latter have been reported as spotty. Starlink users have noted fast connectivity. The area sits far enough from the highway that road noise is not a significant issue.

No potable water is available on-site, and while trash service is listed as an amenity, multiple earlier visitors noted the absence of it, so packing out waste remains the safer assumption. "Availability, quiet, kept washrooms," notes Zoe C. in a concise summary of what the site delivers. Nearby alternatives include Hayspur Hatchery to the west and Picabo Angler Silver Creek RV Park a short distance southeast. This spot makes the most sense for anglers, free-camping regulars, and travelers needing a no-cost overnight with creek access.

Silver Creek West

I pull a 30 foot toy hauler. This place was easy in and easy out. Dirt road with bumps but no potholes. We were lucky and got the site in the middle next to the restrooms right on the river! Dogs had a blast and we got an awesome view!

Great place for a free stay

We stopped as a overnight prior to Craters of the Moon. Off Hwy 20 enough that there is no road noise. Gravel parking areas that are mostly level. Pit toilet on site.
Fire rings in most sites.
Have ok Verizon coverage and super fast Starlink.
Definitely worth a stay.

Beware mosquitos

Great place to stop if you are interested in fishing or sightseeing. The camping area itself is not that awesome, and the mosquitos are intense.

Free camping not far from Craters of the Moon

We stayed at Silver Creek West when we were unable to get a campsite at Craters of the Moon.  Silver Creek is a disperse camping area as no established sites are in the area, but their are several rock fire rings in the area.  The site does have a vault toiler.  Camping is free.  Plenty of flat ground for your tent.  We were visited by a moose as we packed up camp in the morning.  No water or trash service so come prepared.

Solid Little Fish Camp

This is not a fancy campground but a solid place to set up a fish camp next to Silver Creek.  The entire area was clean and the placement of the campers that were already there were fairly dispersed.  There is a single pit toilet available but really no other amenities.

I was able to connect on AT&T (two bars) but the data speeds were fairly low and spotty at times.
