Fishing draws most visitors to Hayspur Hatchery, and the site delivers on that front in two directions. A small fishing lake sits within the campground grounds, well-suited to families with younger anglers, while the nearby preserve gives fly fishers room to work. The hatchery itself is walkable from camp, and several reviewers made a point of stopping in to see the fish up close. Birdwatching is another draw, with open grassland and field views across the property.
The campground is run by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and costs nothing, though a donation box is on site. Sites spread across an open field, with a row of trees along one edge where most RVs tend to park for shade. Two vault toilets sit at either end of the camping area. Bring your own toilet paper. The setup is straightforward: fire rings, picnic tables, and enough open space that crowding is rarely an issue. Cell service is available. Bugs can be significant near the water, particularly in summer.
Laura S. notes the vault toilets are "not the cleanest or freshest I've used, but not the worst," which sets reasonable expectations. RVs are limited to 15 feet. Travelers passing through on routes toward Craters of the Moon or Yellowstone have used this as an overnight stop. The Silver Creek West Access Area is nearby for anglers wanting additional water access, and those looking at camping near Picabo will find a handful of other options in the area. Pack insect repellent if visiting between June and August.
