Skidaway Island State Park anchors the camping landscape around Skidaway Island, Georgia, with spacious, wooded campsites nestled among Spanish moss-draped live oaks. The area features a mix of developed campgrounds, including Fort McAllister State Park Campground and River's End Campground & RV Park on nearby Tybee Island. Accommodations range from primitive tent sites to full-hookup RV spots, cabins, and glamping options. Little Tybee Island offers dispersed camping for those seeking a more remote experience, accessible only by boat or hiking in. Most established campgrounds provide electric hookups, water, showers, and sanitary dump stations, with many sites accommodating both tent and RV campers.

Campground availability remains consistent year-round in this coastal region, with most facilities operating throughout all seasons. The mild Georgia climate makes camping possible even in winter months, though summer brings higher humidity and temperatures. "We absolutely loved Skidaway Island State Park. The campsites are spacious, bathhouses clean, and the trails are kept very manicured. It's a small state park but the perfect size to tuck away for a week," noted one camper. Proximity to Savannah is a significant advantage, with most campgrounds located within 15-30 minutes of downtown. Several campgrounds require reservations, particularly during peak seasons and holidays. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the area, and most developed sites offer WiFi access. The terrain is predominantly flat, making most campgrounds accessible without specialized vehicles.

The natural setting receives consistent praise from visitors, with maritime forests, salt marshes, and coastal views creating distinctive camping experiences. Campers frequently mention wildlife sightings, including deer, birds, and fiddler crabs. One reviewer described Skidaway Island State Park as having "huge campsites, gorgeous bike and walking trails, big playground, friendly staff, state of the art welcome center." Mixed-use campgrounds in the area balance natural surroundings with convenient access to urban amenities. Several campgrounds feature hiking trails that showcase the region's unique coastal ecosystem, with boardwalks extending over marshlands. While waterfront sites are limited to specific campgrounds, many offer water views or access to nearby beaches, rivers, and creeks. The combination of natural settings with proximity to historical sites, beaches, and urban attractions makes this region particularly appealing to campers seeking varied experiences.

      Skidaway Island State Park Campground

Stone’s Throw to Savannah for Live Oak Shaded Camping & Salt Marshes

Just a short drive SE of downtown Savannah, Skidaway Island SP Campground offers a peaceful escape immersed in marshes, maritime forests, and Spanish moss-draped live oaks. Set along Georgia’s Intracoastal Waterway, the park feels remote while still easily accessible not just to civilization, but arguably one of the greatest little cities in the entire South, making it perfect for folks who want to grab a pristine slice of nature without having to sacrifice comfort and / or quick access to shops, restaurants and more salt water taffy shops on the Savannah riverfront than you can imagine.

The campground hosts some 87 tent, trailer and RV sites, many of which include water and electric hookups (usually 30/50 amp), and about 17 premium spots with full hookups. Sites are gravel, shaded, and include a picnic table, fire ring and grill making it ideal for gathering around the campfire. On-site you’ll find incredibly well-kept and clean restrooms with flush toilets, hot showers, a laundry room, dump station and an excellent CG store near the front of the property (near the entrance) for staples like firewood, snacks, ice and souvenirs. There are 3 yurts that the SP will rent you offering enhanced comfort with A/C, heat, kitchens, bathrooms and screened porches - perfect for those seeking a bit more luxury. Pets are allowed in campsites but not in the cabins. Additional features include three pioneer group campsites, a group shelter, laundry facilities, playgrounds and even outdoor fitness equipment with Wi-Fi available at the park office.

What sets Skidaway Island apart from other SPs is, yes, its proximity to an exquisite city, but very much so, the wildlife you'll discover here with deer, fiddler crabs, raccoons and egrets being frequent sightings, which you’ll encounter while experiencing the six miles of hiking trails weaving through salt marsh and maritime forest. The boardwalk and observation tower over the Skidaway Narrows offer scenic glimpses of birdlife and nature. Engaging ranger programs, geocaching and an interpretive center deepen the experience. While close enough to Savannah, if you are not familiar with the area, you should definitely check out Tybee Island (about 30–40 minutes away) to easily combine camping with beach day-trips.

Insider Tips? Oh yeah, I’ve got quite a few for you: (1) For big rigs, book one of the premium full-hookup pull-through sites as they’re roomy and easier to access, although the low-hanging Spanish moss can be tricky to maneuver but will give you tons of shade and creates a peaceful vibe; (2) Even if you’re not staying in a yurt, stop by and check them out as they’re very well made, cozy and well-equipped; (3) Take the Big Ferry and Marsh Trail to the observation tower for sunrise or sunset wildlife viewing where you’ll be richly rewarded, but be sure to bring either that double-walled thermos of coffee for early AM sipping or that cocktail shaker set pre-loaded with your favorite elixir for proper sun-downers; (4) One of the biggest ‘pro tips’ I could give anyone coming to Skidaway is LOAD UP ON FIREWOOD *** BEFORE *** you arrive as every imaginable place that sells firewood within a 20 mile radius was completely out – and while the CG store has a firewood box in front of the store, it was either always locked or out of wood by the time we stopped by; (5) Another huge ‘pro tip’ is given the very close proximity to Publix, which is literally right outside the CG, you don’t really need to load up your coolers too much as you can simply go there whenever you need something, so let Publix keep your supplies cool and save yourself some packing!; (6) Beware of ant infestations – the little guys were literally EVERYWHERE, so I was grateful that I remembered to pack 1 can of ant spray from another bad camping experience, so we sprayed a perimeter around our tent and we were fine; (7) You will also want to be mindful that the black-eyed furry bandits (racoons) were INCREDIBLY aggressive and would actually come straight up to our picnic table and grab things WHILE WE WERE EATING and tried to run away with our bags, food and even a small pot!; and (8) When you grow weary of conjuring up that next meal from your cooler and want to try out some local fare, these are some nearby joints I'd recommend: Castaways, Sandfly BBQ where you’ll want to definitely gnosh on the smoked chicken, baked beans and cole slaw, Crystal Beer Parlor for old school cheesburger’s in a century’s old grocery store and Loc’s Chicken & Waffles, but if you want something truly transformation, venture into Savannah for fantastic dining at The Grey with its sizzlin’ smoking pig and Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House for succulent fried chicken – both of which require advance reservations and likely a better outfit than the one you might be camping in – and finish an excellent bit of dining with some of the best ice cream in the universe over at Leopold’s Ice Cream Parlor.

      Happy Camping!

      Skidaway Island State Park Campground

Gates close at 10, otherwise great

Expensive for a campground in general but not for the region, and I was able to find a discount code online. Staff went out of the way to accommodate arrival after the office closed. Hard refusal to allow entry after 10 to preserve quiet hours, no idea what happens in emergency. Place is big and beautiful, well landscaped with lots of mostly level sites and Spanish moss everywhere. Cell service is sufficient. Proximity to Savannah is a huge deal, it's a nice enough park on its own but this is the best option if you're visiting the city and need power at night.

Red Gate Farms - RV Resort

Great place! Plan to visit again.

We loved this place. We only stayed 1 night but have it on our future list to spend a long weekend when it’s cooler outside. We snuck in a late horseback riding session for the kids. The site was on gravel but fairly level. All the staff were great.

      Legacy RV Resort

One to Watch Along the I-95 Corridor

If your family enjoys discovering new places before everyone else does, Legacy RV Resort is a campground worth keeping on your radar. Located just minutes from historic Darien and surrounded by the beautiful marshlands of coastal Georgia, this newer RV resort offers spacious concrete sites with full hookups, immaculate bathhouses, excellent laundry facilities, dependable Wi-Fi and some of the nicest picnic tables we've encountered anywhere. While many of the resort's signature amenities, which include the pool, playground, clubhouse and nature-focused attractions, were still under development during our visit, the peaceful setting, abundant birdlife and welcoming atmosphere left us excited to see what Legacy will become. One of my favorite memories was watching great egrets and herons glide across the nearby marsh as the evening settled in, reminding us that sometimes the surrounding landscape is every bit as memorable as the campground itself. Some campgrounds are finished, while others invite you to be part of their story from the very beginning. From what we experienced, Sites 18–23 along the eastern edge of the resort offer the greatest sense of privacy while minimizing highway noise. We would recommend Legacy RV Resort for families traveling through coastal Georgia because of its spacious sites, outstanding modern facilities and convenient location, but if amenities like the pool, playground or clubhouse are important to your trip, I'd recommend calling ahead to confirm which features have been completed before making your reservation.

    Guide to Skidaway Island

Camping spots near Skidaway Island, Georgia range from waterfront locations to forested retreats within a 30-minute drive radius. The coastal region sits at near sea level with salt marshes dominating the landscape, creating habitat for fiddler crabs and shore birds. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 40°F, making year-round camping viable with January and February offering fewer crowds but occasional rain.

    What to do

Hiking island trails: Fort McAllister State Park has several paths showcasing coastal ecosystems. "Really nice campground. Great hikes. Very close to a Publix and two convenience stores. My kids loved the playground and the fort tour!!" noted one visitor to Fort McAllister State Park Campground.

Kayak to secluded camping: Little Tybee Island offers primitive camping accessible only by boat. A camper at Little Tybee Island Dispersed shared, "The 'bone yard' as it's called by locals is an area of fallen, uprooted trees on the eastern side of the island that is absolutely gorgeous (and fun to climb through). Bonus is that there's never a shortage of firewood!"

Fishing opportunities: Several parks offer fishing access, from freshwater lakes to tidal creeks. "The campground is beautiful and well-maintained. The area is convenient to downtown Savannah and not too far from Tybee Island. There are some easy nature trails we really enjoyed," reported a visitor to Skidaway Island State Park.

    What campers like

Spacious, private sites: Campers repeatedly mention the ample space between sites at Skidaway Island. One reviewer at Skidaway Island State Park Campground wrote, "Big sites with lots of trees and privacy. Well maintained campground that is convenient to Savannah and other sightseeing spots. Lots of great hiking within walking distance of the campsite."

Wildlife viewing: The coastal ecosystem supports diverse wildlife viewing opportunities. "We had no problems getting in and the trails/sites are large and clean. Deer and other wildlife are seen every day," shared a camper at Skidaway Island State Park.

Farm-like settings: Some campgrounds offer pastoral settings with animals. A visitor to Red Gate Farms - RV Resort described it as "beautiful property. I would recommend. I would come back," while another added, "We enjoyed walking around the grounds and the staff was friendly throughout our visit. They have multiple locations set up with swinging chairs to take in the views. Visiting with the horses, goats, and peacocks during our walks."

    What you should know

Insect preparation: Sand flies and mosquitoes can be abundant, especially at dusk. At Little Tybee Island, one camper advised, "Bring insect repellent, long shirt and pants. I got bit up pretty bad by sand fleas while playing on the beach, and had itchy red spots all over my legs for about a week."

Tidal awareness: Tides affect access to some areas, particularly boat-accessible camping. "The tides are extreme so choose your campsite carefully, and check tide tables before kayaking in or out (it is best to head out with the receding tide, and head back with the rising tide)," warned a camper about Little Tybee Island.

Wildlife precautions: Local campgrounds have alligators and other wildlife requiring caution. One visitor to Lake Jasper RV Park noted, "Located on a wildlife park, I saw a few alligators in the lake. Fairly peaceful, besides the fact we were right next to the pool so it got loud at times."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play areas for children. A camper at Skidaway Island State Park reported, "This place is Great! I went there with my family about a month ago, they have hiking trails, bike trails, a nature center and plenty of room for kids to ride bikes."

Water activities for kids: Pools and splash pads provide entertainment options. A visitor at CreekFire RV Resort shared, "Campground is super clean and friendly staff. Love having the resort like pool/lazy river/splash pad. Sites are packed in pretty well, but they do a good job dividing them off from one another so it doesn't feel too cramped."

Educational opportunities: Many parks offer learning activities for children. "My kids loved the playground and the fort tour!!" mentioned a Fort McAllister visitor, while another noted the "Visitor Center was really interesting and the staff were very knowledgeable and helpful."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Back-in sites often offer more privacy than pull-throughs. At Red Gate Farms, a reviewer suggested, "See B1-B3 on the map. These are good for trailers plus a vehicle, you won't have a lot of neighbors, and there's a bit of a water view with no one in front of you."

Urban access options: Several campgrounds offer transportation to downtown Savannah. "You can catch a trolley to downtown Savannah," noted a Red Gate Farms visitor, while another mentioned, "Close to shopping for food, restaurants etc."

Utility considerations: Power reliability varies between campgrounds. A visitor to River's End Campground & RV Park advised, "Sites had full service hookups. Sites were level. Bathroom and shower were very clean and spacious. Close to downtown and walkable to beaches."
