      Cedar Break RV Park

A great find to hang your hat for the evening. New owners look like they are doing amazing up grades. Our site 57 didn’t have a picnic table or fire ring but I’m sure they are working on it. Fairly quite and we would for sure come back and give it a 5 star when their done on the remodel.

      Stone Mountain Park Campground

Welcome center is nice, but the roads and asphalt sites are crumbling. We had a back in site that was fairly level. No real privacy from neighboring sites.

      Bald Ridge Creek

Not ideal for the primitive camper …

Way too many rules to have to abide by. It’s not a day use area, so you HAVE to camp over night or else they threaten to ban you from all FoCo campsites. Normally not a big deal, but there was supposed to be rain during our visit and that had me paranoid. We camped out, the rain held off, it was nice. Then day 2, I wasn’t feeling it anymore, but I didn’t want to be banned from camping 🙄 so we stayed the night and packed up at 5:45am the next day. No coffee or chilling. I just wanted to get out of there! I love camping out in the wilderness…no rules, no stress, no people, no RVs. Just nature.

      Raven Cliff Falls

      Off Grid and Creek Side

Very large dispersed campsites along the White Oak Gap Road. Very rugged road, AWD recommended but possible in some smaller vehicles. Creek crossings in some areas. Access to Dukes Creek Trail and Raven Cliffs Trail towards bottom of road. Vault toilets near trailheads. Great for large groups, our party slept 8 tents and several hammocks and there was still plenty of space.

      Amicalola Falls State Park Camping

Site 18: Don’t let the “hardest site to back into” reviews scare you! There’s a trick.

We stayed at Site 18, which has a reputation for being one of the hardest sites to back into. There’s definitely a trick to it! Pull your truck forward along the site, then pull out toward the site across from you, making an S-turn. From there, line it up and back in. It's tricky, but doable!

We loved this area and packed a lot into our stay. We visited BJ’s Apple Orchard, stopped at Burt’s Pumpkin Farm (where I somehow ended up with a 150-pound pumpkin 😂), had dinner at Cascades Restaurant, and took the easy way to see the falls.

The fenced-in sites were a huge plus, especially with our pups. It gave them more room to roam. The bathrooms and showers are individual rooms, which was nice, and the welcome center is one of the nicest we’ve come across.

And then there’s THE HILL. I was born and raised in the Smokies, so I’m no stranger to mountain roads, but the incline is no joke! The reviews are absolutely not exaggerating when they say it’s steep. Come prepared!

I have T-mobile and husband has Xfinity and we both have great service. Wifi in the campground gets the job done for Netflix at night.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. Beautiful area, plenty to explore, dog-friendly sites, and a campground we’d visit again. 🏕️🥾

Beautiful views with lake front camping

Campsite was the perfect lake front spot for our dog’s last camping adventure with us. The resort felt super safe for 2 females traveling with their dog and all campsites and bathrooms were super clean.

      Fort Yargo State Park Campground

      Lakefront Overlook

We stayed at Site #45, and it quickly became one of our favorite campsites because it felt more like a wooded overlook, perched above the lake. The breeze coming off the water kept us comfortable enough to enjoy a campfire even on a hot August evening.

The site fit our 14x10 tent comfortably, but I wouldn’t recommend anything larger. There isn’t a true tent pad, and you’ll notice the slope while sleeping—but the view from inside the tent was priceless. We experienced a four-hour thunderstorm and didn’t have any standing water at our site afterward.

⚠️ The slope becomes much steeper near the shoreline, so I wouldn’t recommend this site for toddlers or anyone with mobility concerns.

🛝 Our 7-year-old loved fishing from the shoreline and thought the steep slope made the perfect slide to get back down to the water. Built-in slide + dirty shorts = happy camper. 😂

🔥 The site includes a clean fire ring with an adjustable cooking grate and a separate standing charcoal grill.

🦟 We didn’t have any issues with mosquitoes during our stay.

🚰 The shared water pump wasn’t working during our visit.

🚽 The bathhouse was spacious, clean, and only a short walk away.

🚗 A community wagon is parked near the bathhouse for campers to use when hauling gear between their vehicle and campsite. Loved that!

      A few tips:

🪵 The Visitor Center sells $6 bundles of firewood and has a nice selection of souvenirs.

🐜 Plenty of flies and large ants, so keep your food put away and your tent zipped.

🪲 Cicadas were loud at night. I loved it, but our 7-year-old slept with his wireless headphones on. If you’re a light sleeper, you may want to pack earplugs if you’re camping here June-August.

🎣 We caught more bluegill fishing from our campsite than we did from the fishing dock.

🌅 If you’re looking for one of the best views in the campground and don’t mind sleeping on a slight incline, Site #45 is well worth considering.

The surrounding mixed pine and hardwood forests provide varied terrain for camping from lakeside beaches to wooded ridges. Rainfall averages 4-5 inches monthly during summer camping season with afternoon thunderstorms common.

    What to do

Hiking trail exploration: Amicalola Falls State Park Camping features multiple hiking options with varied difficulty levels. A camper shared, "The hiking trails are amazing. The falls are beautiful. It was very busy parking was a bit of a challenge but worth it." Another visitor mentioned the wildlife viewing opportunities: "My teens loved it. They found all kinds of insects they had never seen even a Luna moth."

Kayaking and paddleboarding: Lake access points at multiple campgrounds allow for non-motorized water activities. At River Forks Park & Campground, one reviewer noted, "We tent camped here...we were up on a steep hill, but it was beautiful! Deer were roaming thru the campsite... so many!" The campground provides convenient lake access with "plenty of access and views of Lake Lanier."

Fishing from your campsite: Many lakefront sites allow fishing without leaving your site. A reviewer at Sawnee Campground described it as having "wooded lots" that make it "the perfect relaxation spot for RV & Tent campers. With a lake view at almost every turn, the campsites are roomy and comfortable."

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Stone Mountain Park Campground receives consistent praise for maintenance. As one visitor explained, "We spent a weekend here in section O. It was a nice, spacious campsite with a nice picnic table and partial view of the lake even though we didn't have 'lake view' site."

Shaded sites: Many campers appreciate the forest cover at Shady Grove Campground, with a reviewer noting, "Very shaded sites with many being waterfront. We were in site 15, 14, and my parents used the Georgia glamping company in site 16." Another camper shared, "Shady Grove is a wonderful gem of a campground. It is owned and run by Forsyth County and is beautifully maintained."

Waterfront access: Several campgrounds offer direct lake access. At Bald Ridge Creek, a camper reported, "Stayed three times August-October with kayaks. Two times had nice lake proximity/view. Beach is nice for the kids." Another camper mentioned, "Very pretty area. Right on the lake."

    What you should know

Alcohol policies vary: Some campgrounds strictly prohibit alcohol. A camper at Shady Grove shared, "When I met the ranger, I soon realized that he may have been taking his job too seriously... The ranger was telling us full grown adults that we had to throw away all of our alcohol." Check individual campground policies before bringing alcoholic beverages.

Reservation essentials: Most popular sites fill quickly, especially waterfront locations. At Don Carter State Park Campground, a camper advised, "If you are wanting to check out a rental of a canoe make sure you call in advance, these are only available during certain times."

Terrain considerations: Many campsites have sloped or uneven terrain. At River Forks, a reviewer noted, "Many sites have precarious/dangerous sloping driveways for RVs to get into. Newly installed sites are near completion but they make sites very close together."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. At Margaritaville, one camper reported, "My wife and I went here for a week back in June. I've been to many campgrounds in my day and I can say this one by far is the best. Clean campsites, fun amenities and great golf."

Beach areas for swimming: Designated swimming areas provide safer options for children. A visitor to Bald Ridge Creek noted, "Rangers were very nice, beach is cool, nice lake front sites. We had a fun time here, especially the kids. They loved riding their bikes around in this great family friendly campground."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Many campgrounds offer chances to see local fauna. At Sawnee Campground, a visitor mentioned, "We are at spot 97... The view is fantastic. We brought 2 dogs which they enjoyed the scenery. They are firm on making sure pet owners have their leash on and do not free roam. A lot of deer just walking around."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Many RVers recommend checking site maps carefully before booking. At Red Top Mountain State Park Campground, a camper warned, "Heavily wooded sites that are not well maintained. Very narrow roads in the campground with lots of pot holes. Not the easiest state park to pull a travel trailer in."

Hookup configurations: Some campgrounds have unusual hookup placements. At Don Carter, a reviewer noted, "Site 7 is separate from the others and has the whole point except there is a trail behind the site. No easy, sandy water access unless you go to the nice beach they have."

Yurt camping options: For those seeking a glamping experience in Cumming, Georgia, several parks offer yurt accommodations. At Stone Mountain, one visitor shared, "The sites are color coded depending on size and there is even a yurt to rent. We went swimming and hiking. Close to Cartersville to enjoy great restaurants and shopping."
