Lake Park Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Canyon Lake Park anchors this small urban campground on the west side of Rapid City, putting campers within walking distance of a city park, nature trail, and lake access. The lake draws anglers but not swimmers; reviews note it is closed to swimming. Noise from nearby roads and neighboring sites is a consistent theme across reviews, which is worth factoring in for light sleepers. Sites sit beneath large, mature trees that provide substantial shade throughout the campground.

Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections are available, and the bathrooms stay open 23 hours a day, closing once daily for cleaning. Showers run hot. No open fire pits are permitted, though propane fire pits are allowed. Pets are not accepted. Tent sites without hookups run on the pricier side relative to similar urban campgrounds, according to recent visitors. Campers planning to explore campgrounds around Rapid City will find this location well-positioned as a base, with Mount Rushmore and the surrounding Badlands region reachable within 30 minutes or less.

"Quiet place for being located in town," notes Jonique D., though road noise does register. The lake path can be obstructed by geese and their droppings, so the nature trail may be a more practical option for a morning walk. Nearby alternatives include Rapid City RV Park & Campground to the east. Reservations are available and worth booking ahead during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, when the area fills quickly.

Woud visit again

Overall great experience, the hosts were sweet and very helpful. Stayed at a non-electric tent site and it was a little on the pricier side in my opinion, but it’s walking distance to a great park with a river and nature trail, and a 5-10 minute drive to Main Street, about 15 minutes to a lot of other main places in town. Lot of noise pollution from the roads+ other campers, but it’s near the city center so what do you expect. Good hot showers and potable water.

Nice family friendly site

Quiet place for being located in town. Close to a city park and lake for fishing (no swimming). Full bathrooms open 23 hours (closed once a day for cleaning). Playground for the kids, picnic tables at each site. No wood burning or fire pits, but propane fire pits allowed (though it was 90+ degrees when we were there and didn't need a fire). Great mosquito control, not nearly as many mosquito as I would have expected. I would stay here again.

Different Than Expected

Great friendly staff and beautiful massive trees throughout the campground. It wasn’t quite as close to the lake as I thought, maybe a 2min walk. Canyon Lake looks beautiful, but is disgusting! There is a great park and trails nearby. Not too far from downtown and all the tasty breweries.

Awesome camping place

We have stayed here for a week each year during rally week. They are super nice and very accommodating. Could not ask for better treatment.
