If you’ve landed on this review hopefully its because of a primary decision to visit one of the greatest beach communities in all of Florida – New Smyrna Beach. This super-slim archipelago boasts some of the most perfect white sugar sand beaches anywhere – plus, the best part is that this beach is a proper ‘drive-on’ beach, so whatever you would normally have to haul in a cart or wheeled by trolley to the beach, you can simply keep in the trunk or bed of your SUV / car / truck. And if you are here, hopefully you have planned to be here for some time – or, upon seeing how simply amazing New Smyrna Beach is, have decided that you need a place to stay ... but unfortunately, you and a couple thousand other people have come to the same conclusion. So what do you do?
Well, you look for simple and affordable accommodations nearby, and that’s what will attract you to Sugar Mill Ruins Travel Park, which is conveniently located only 15 minutes drive or so from beachside bliss. While this is definitely an RV-laden outpost, the vibe here is quite contagious, with its main office greeting you immediately upon arrival, where just past this wooden log cabin structure pure hedonism awaits with vibrant bouncing beach balls popping up and down in this overgrown campside Florida shaped-pool bursting with loud southern country music (yee-haw!) and nearly everyone en towe brandishing a coozie with some cheap domestic beer and endless “hey y’all’s” and smiles to boot at the ‘Tiki Hut’ (warning – there’s nothing here that resembles a ’Tiki Hut’ apart from the drinks they pour, although even here, no umbrellas!). This place feels like Spring Break for the adults toting 2-3 kids with them as they dwell in their mobile manufactured temporary housing.
With all the proper hook-ups being provided (30 / 50 amp electric, sewer, water), this oversized RV menagerie feels like it’s been carved out of a forest of tall needle-pine trees sheltering its residents from the sweltering heat of NE Florida. The family-friendly restrooms and shower facilities are fairly clean and there’s picnic tables and BBQ grills sporadically littered all over the place. Sugar Mill Ruins also rents out very affordable cabins (12 x 20) with twin bunk beds and fold-out futon (nice) complete with mini-fridge, table, chairs, microwave and even a porch with deck chairs. There’s more than 200 sites to choose from complete with a playground for the kiddos, game room with 2 billiards tables, plus 3 acres of lake fishing along with a cool pavilion with games and events (this is the main building that you’ll first encounter).
Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) While not exactly a destination, Sugar Mill Ruins is so dang convenient to some of the best beach experiences you might ever encounter, depending upon your leaning, leave early and spend as much time as you can at New Smyrna Beach; (2) If you’re looking for a different place to soak some suds, I highly recommend Norwood’s Treehouse Bar, which has fantastic cocktails and local live music; and (3) For simply sublime food, check out Outriggers Tiki Bar& Grille, which has a pretty gracious happy hour where you can spot manatees and dolphins while biting down on some of the freshest catch in Florida, but with outstanding accoutrement, like key lime coconut beurre blanc and sticky bamboo rice or pineapple and peppadew rhum butter infused fish entrees.

Good RV Park near Disney and it is a very pretty, lush, tropical park. Old town Kissimmee is right next door, and it has several loud amusement rides. This is definitely an active RV Park, lots of people out enjoying all of the activities. Spaces are tight and roads are narrow and lots of curves and curbs. The only bummer we noticed was the dumpster area in the middle of the park would get hot and it would stink pretty bad, Florida is breezy and it was pretty unpleasant.
They have golf cart rental, thought that was pretty cool.
They have a gate guard shack thing and lots of staff members. They have dark green polos ride around on golf carts. They were very friendly and they have many planned activities for guests and residents.
They have a few sections: -The premium spots on the south side of the park were the nicest with the most space. -Thousand Trails section is on the West side and they do not have sewer (they said they are working on this in 2020)
Lots of built in units for rental, some streets are narrow and challenging to navigate. Many spots did not have sewer, but they had free pump outs every Wednesday and a dump station. They will be fixing this during 2020- per management.

Why contemplate leaving the creature comforts of home when you can just haul everything that you love most to a place that provides all of the concrete paved, easy-to-access amenities that you likely have at home in the first place? If you find yourself in this dilemma, no worries, Orlando/ Kissimmee KOA has all of your manufactured outdoor camping needs covered … and what’s perhaps most interesting is that you won’t even have to drive out of the concrete jungle to encounter this experience, in fact, it’s right off a major 4-lane highway (HWY 192).
So, if you are dreaming of escaping your domesticated life for the thrills of an outdoor camping adventure that will have you appreciating the best of what nature has to offer, then just be forewarned, this is not that place. But if you are simply looking for a change of scenery and want to be near all of the action and attractions here in Central Florida’s ‘Magic City’ and want a different experience than paying overpriced rates at Tiki-hut themed entertainment hotels and relish the idea of dusting off your RV or unpacking your tent in a pseudo nature environment complete with all the astro turf your dog can poop on within a confined, fenced-in setting, then this KOA (and let’s be frank, ANY KOA) has you covered.
As far as amenities go, it’s a KOA, so there’s going to be more amenities here than you can shake a stick at. These include: heated in-ground medium-sized pool complete with tiled patio, lounge chaise chairs, tables with umbrellas and regular chairs, water-rinsing station, as well as a jacuzzi / spa, propane refilling station, bike rentals, 134’ max length slots, WiFi, pavilion, Kamp K9, firewood for sale, 24 hour laundr-O-mat, picnic tables, community fire pits, on-site market, recreation office, life-size Jenga, designated trash areas, fitness center, playground, dog wash, public bus service, basketball court, EV chargers, jump pad, taxi service back-in and pull-through perfectly paved, level concrete RV sites with full hook-ups (30 / 50 amp electric, water and sewage). There’s even RV sites that are dubbed ‘Deluxe,’ which are larger and come with a paved connected patio.
No RV? And REALLY don’t want to have an experience that is different than living at home? Even here at this KOA, that’s not a problem, where the proprietors will easily rent you a deluxe cabin, if there is one available. These 1BR or 2BR A/C cooled Deluxe Cabins sleep 4, 6 or 8 people and come with bunk bed set, futon / sofa sleeper and a queen-sized bed along with a private bath and shower, TV with cable offering over 20 channels, some with EV chargers, patio w/ charcoal or gas BBQ grill and fire pit, front porch with patio furniture and chairs, refrigerator, fresh linens, paw pen for the pups and a partial or full kitchen. They even have rustic cabins that are cheaper and don’t come with all the thrills for those that want some degree of ‘roughing’ it, so this means no kitchen and no bathroom or showers, although there is full bed, bunk bed, TV, mini-refrigerator, A/C patio furniture, brick fire pit with cooking grate.
Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) To continue with the simple, easy-to-access, manufactured experience theme here, for those that grow tired of trying to conjure up that next meal for the kiddos, who are grumbling about making every meal, head on over to any one of these nearby drive-thru windows or curb-side meal offerings: McDonald’s, Panda Express, Applebee’s, Steak ‘n Shake and Wendy’s; (2) If you want to heighten that suburban culinary experience you all have been craving though, I really do rate the silverware-free dining experience that is Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, which is literally just down the road and is actually a lot of fun for the kiddos and adults alike; (3) Should you find yourself in need of anything that you either forgot or may have run out of, then fear not, there’s a Sam’s Club that is in walking distance from this KOA and further south that definitely requires a drive, there’s a Walmart Supercenter; (4) I’ve noticed that this place has SIGNIFICANT discounts if you simply plan in advance – so for example, during the months of March OR April (it’s January now), they’re offering a whopping 25% discount; and (5) If you are looking for a slice of nature’s paradise, then I highly recommend driving a bit north to Wekiwa Springs, where you’ll be able to enjoy one of the most amazing springs in all of Florida where the water is 72 degrees year round.

We stayed in a cabin at this park. Beds were a little uncomfortable, but other than that, everything was great. Bathrooms were clean, staff was great!
GuideWe only started one night, thank god bc we would have left early. Long term residents made it not so private and made us quite uncomfortable for our family about d the campground and pool. Cabin faced the long term residents as well and was right in front of the dump station. Just uncomfortable feeling. I am so thankful that we decided not to tent, we would have never slept with the speeding, loud trucks on the highway. We could hear all of it through the walls of the cabin. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else 😬😬😬😬 Front desk woman was the only thing that was nice.

TravelerWe booked this campground for Orlando Questival 2017. Location is right in the heart of things so it is convenient. Not in a wooded area so if you prefer something off the beaten path this would not be for you. We rented a cabin to sleep 8. Short on towels but other than that it’s equipped sufficiently with cookware. We are in cabin 127. One of our burners doesn’t work on the stove so we are limited on how much we can cook indoors. Outdoors there is a grill and patio area to dine with tables and chairs. Nice bit of yard comes with this campsite. Perfectly suited for our needs, just needed more than 4 sets of towels for a party of 8 and a little maintenance on the stove. Unit is very clean and the kids are having a blast here!

This campground in located central to major attractions in the Orlando area. The campground is very small and very quiet. It is attached to a park and they have a swimming pool, disk golf, horseback riding and cabins for rent. The price is ridiculously low at about $25/day.

Warning: you are not actually on New Smyrna Beach at this RV wonderland, but rather, a good 15-20 minute drive to one of the most glorious drive-on beaches in all of Florida. So what you may sacrifice in terms of immediate beach access, you more than make up for in an affordable place to rock up your RV (max 50 feet length), rent a cabin (1BR or 2BR) or pitch a tent for the night. This destination marries ancient Oaks with swinging Palms and has a very nice forested feel encircling the place (and helping you forget all of that traffic that is whirring by just outside of the property).
As for the campground itself, all of the typical hook-ups (electric, water and sewage) are available for the mobile-inclined RV’ers out there. For those that prefer to camp au naturale, there’s a handful of spots, but honestly, you won’t feel as though you are out in nature whatsoever, as the noise in the place is pretty unsettling as the individual campsites are too close together. And if you have just rocked up in your car or SUV and are looking for an alternative to hotels, then you have just hit the lottery, as the cabins here, while small, are quaint and fairly new as well as offering a proper front porch swing.
New Smyrna Beach RV Park & Campground offers up amenities like a nice little swimming pool (at about 4pm, there were some pretty nice cocktails being poured poolside!) along with free WiFi, TV scattered relatively new picnic tables and stand-up BBQ grilles.
Insider’s tips? This spot is perfect whether you are heading to Daytona 500 or watching a rocket launch form Kennedy Space Center. I’d also highly recommend Central Florida Zoo, which has 116 acres of exotic animals and botanical gardens to explore. Of course, there’s 25 miles of pristine Atlantic shoreline encompassing the dunes and Mosquito Lagoon, which is one of the state’s longest stretches of undeveloped and protected preserve to explore.

TravelerThis KOA is definitely one of the nicer KOA sites I’ve visited. It’s a bit cramped, but has all the amenities you need. Bathrooms are super clean! Not many tent sites, but they’re located right next to the bathrooms and the pool. This location is very convenient if you’re planning to go to Disney but don’t want to spend a lot on a campsite. They also have cabins to rent (I didn’t rent one on this visit but would like to check them out).
LegendThis is a great campground if you want to visit Orlando/ Kissimee attractions without paying an arm and a leg. It is located by old town in Kissimmee. The RV resort is always neat and clean. Sites are well maintained with full hookups. You can also rent a cabin or even buy one on site for full-time rsort living. There are showers, laundry facility (at pool). pool side cafe, shuffleboard and wi-fi. This place is always busy with a calendar of scheduled activities like Holiday parties, block parties, etc.

Like me, they’ve come from the wintery north, so they sure enjoy the home and business they’ve founded next to Florida shores. One of the many things that they recommend is that if you are looking for somewhere to camp, there’s actually a handful of really great options that can be accessed by boat. Area fisherman have been flocking to these parts for over a hundred years in search of Redfish and Snook, where with the right bait, you’ll be sure to catch plenty. While this place rents waterfront cabins, complete with their own private piers, there is plenty of room for RV’s (no pull-throughs though), so you can either rent a cabin in addition to your RV or simply rent a plot of land to park your RV and take advantage of some of the best boat launch points on the eastern coast of FL. And if you’re a tent camper, sorry, this place doesn’t accommodate us.
There’s tons of natural wildlife in addition to all the fish you’ll be catching, where we saw dolphins, manatees and all types of waterfoul. From an amenities standpoint, in addition to the piers, there are boat slips if you brought watercraft, outdoor fire pits and BBQ grilles, picnic tables and the place is pet friendly. Insider’s tip? If you plan your stay well, you can time it to see one of the many launches from Cape Canaveral– and if not, no worries, the sunsets you’ll encounter will be some of the most amazing you ever experience. Another tip is if you have time, make sure to make it down to Haulover Canal where kayaks and canoes can launch from to discover some of the most amazing birds, alligators and endemic wildlife to Mosquito Lagoon.

We made our reservations on the app, you could also choose to book online at Koa.com or over the phone. It’s an easy process and you’ll have multiple site options to choose from. Sign up for the Value Kard rewards program if you think you’ll stay more than 3 nights a year, it’ll pay for itself. KOA will not assign a specific site until you arrive to checkin, however they will accept requests if you have an area in mind or friends you want to be close to.
This park has 3 types of Motorhome/Camper sites; back-in, pull-through and deluxe patios. They are all full hook-ups(50Amp, water, sewer and cable). They also have deluxe cabins and tent sites available. We were extremely impressed of the amenities the tent sites had. Large tables, chairs around the fire pit and covered kitchen area with sinks and electrical outlets. These are located next to the shower and bath rooms, this makes it very convenient for those quick trips in the middle of the night. They’re also diagonal to the heated pool, sauna, workout room, bike rental area and laundry area.
On the other side of the park is a great playground and jump pad. They even have a fenced in dog run and dog wash area. This is a beautiful KOA location and well maintained. We like that the campground is just lit enough at night to walk the dogs after sunset. The lamps look like little Mickey Mouse heads! The staff is friendly and helpful. The camp store is well stocked and kept clean. There is minimal noise from the major road nearby.
If you can’t stay at Fort Wilderness on Disney property this is the next best location!!!

Campground Review: Sunshine Travel RV Resort is an encore/thousand trails campground. The grounds are very well maintained with lots of amenities like pool, horseshoe, shuffleboard, Mini gold course, clubhouse with restrooms and an attached laundry facility. Since we were there for a soccer tournament, it was nice to have a place to wash the stinky uniforms in between games. We never saw any staff because the office is closed on weekends which posed a small problem when we had an issue in the laundry room. Other than that, it was a nice reasonably priced place to stay with a variety of campers, permanent residents and cabins for rent. Gear review: I wore my Xero Umara Z-trail shoes all weekend. It is my second pair to receive and I love them. So comfortable you hardly know they are there. No rub areas or hot spots from long use. I have worn them in a kayak, riverbed, soccer field, running track and just around the house. Highly recommend giving them a try!

If your idea of heaven is closely packed RV trailers lined up side-by-side with not a whole lot of space to stretch out and relax, then Mosquito Lagoon RV Park has you covered. While from my POV, that’s the downside, the huge upside is that this destination places you in the front row of oceanside vistas and supremely easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. Located in Oak Hill on the Space Coast, this seaside campground is easily accessed from I95 and is easily one of the best fishing meccas in the whole of the Sunshine state where you’ll catch the famed Oak Hill Reds in addition to gag grouper, snook, mangrove snapper and spotted sea trout, to name but a few.
While Mosquito Lagoon RV has about 30 RV sites (3 of which are pull through), you’ll discover all the usual amenities from 30 / 50 amp service in addition to water and sewage hook-ups, picnic tables, fire pits (by request), fairly clean and well-organized bathrooms, laundr-O-mat and fairly decent WiFi. They also rent a few cabins here, on-premise ice machines and have a pretty nice Tiki Hut& Bar (albeit makeshift, due to rebuilding from a recent hurricane), where they have no problem if you BYOB. Unfortunately, there’s no tent camping here, but for a $35 fee, they’ll let you park your car here and then boat to one of the many neighboring islands where you can engage in some pretty epic primitive camping options.
Insider tips? Here’s a few. First, this place has a handful of kayaks that they’ll rent to you for FREE! That’s pretty amazing, but you’ll want to call ahead and reserve one well ahead of arriving. Second, unlike many other campgrounds in the area, this place has their own boat launch and slips, making it quite ideal if you have your own watercraft. Also, if you time it right, as you are on the Space Coast, you can see a rocket or satellite launching into the pristine star-speckled nighttime sky. Lastly, if you want a break from cooking, I highly recommending heading a bit up the road from Mosquito Lagoon RV Park to Goodrich Seafood, where they have all the seafood you could expect grilled, fried or sautéed along with evening specials, live music and a pretty amazing bar. Ask for Oliver who likes to pour them strong!

ScoutThe park itself was really nice. Lots of trees. Sites were not huge, but had enough room. Lots of long term residents and regulars, so it was easy to get the local scoop.
But— and it’s a big one for those of us in the 21st century— the internet is worse than pathetic. NONE of the carriers have consistent coverage. I have ATT, and most if the time I had nothing. Sometimes I’d get 1 bar with barely enough to see if an email came in. As soon as we got on the street outside the park, text messages we had missed would start showing up. Users with other carriers said the same.
There is a paid WIFI available in the park. Talking with other residents it was good enough to stream movies, but nothing more. I work remotely (hosting zoom meetings) so I didn’t bother paying the daily rate.
If you work remotely, I’d suggest a different location. If you’re looking to get away for a bit- this is the place.
Bathroom and showers were modern and clean. Coin laundry is on site. Swimming pool was good. There’s even a bar by the pool to order drinks, ice cream cones, and hot dogs.
ScoutIf you like camping and water sports, you will love SISP. The park is sorrounded by water, you have the Indian River Lagoon, The Sebastian Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean. The campgrounds is located on the Sebastian Inlet. The sites on the 1st camp loop face the inlet. The views are breathtaking. You can watch the stingrays and dolphins jumping out of the water. You can watch the sunrise over the Atlantic and watch is set over the Inlet. There is an awesome cove area that is perfect for families with small children. There are two boat ramps located within the park, one for motorized vessels and one for non motorized vessels. They also have a marina about a mile down the road where they have boat, kayak and SUPB rentals. SiSP is home to the world famous fishing pier. There are two fishing piers that extend out into the Atlantic ocean. Great for catching shark, Snook and Redfish. You can snorkel and scuba dive in the Cove (great for small children), Inlet or Atlantic, you have to have your own gear. There is a reef just a few hundred yards off the beach. There is an abundance of sea life including , dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. Dont forget to bring your surfboard. The museam offers sea turtle walks during nesting season. If you have a boat you can go out to the sandbar and anchor out for a day fun on the water. There is a great restaurant that has dining views of the Atlantic ocean. I had lunch up on the deck one day and watched the Tarpon run. The restaurants serves breakfast and lunch. I recomend the Mahi sandwich with a cold beer. They also serve alcohol and wine. They show movies on the water. Enjoy a movie while you float in the cove on you tube.
