Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Joy RV Park and Jetty Park Canaveral Port Authority maintain cabin rentals with varying levels of amenities. Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Awesome stargazing and wildlife

If you love camping, wildlife, and stargazing but still want the convenience of amenities (i.e electricity, running water, bathroom, shower) then this is the place for you.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park is part of IDA International Dark-Sky Places. The park has little light pollution and also a stargazing pad where you can also camp on.

The campgrounds aren't large but the campsites are good for tents and RVs. The one site we stayed at had water and electric hook-ups and a firepit. We were close to very clean restroom area that also had showers, washer and dryer. They do have primitive campsites for the more rustic individuals. The campgrounds are about 45 minutes from town, but the ranger station sells ice for $2.50 and firewood purchase is by honor system. We also saw other campers with their dogs so pet-friendly as well.

Lots of hiking trails and so much wildlife. We saw deer grazing near our campsite!

Make sure to bring lots of mosquito repellent, especially in the summer months. Otherwise you'll get bit...a lot! But it is Florida after all.

    Fort Pierce-Port St. Lucie KOA

    Close to town and well-kept

General: Small family-run KOA campground (33 sites) located 1.5 miles north of Fort Pierce on Highway One. All sites are FHU with a combination of regular, premium, and extra-large sites. There is also a tent site area.

Site Quality: All sites are level and gravel with a fire pit and a brick patio area with a picnic table. Typical RV park layout with minimal to no privacy separating sites.

Bathhouse: Two unisex all-in-ones that were clean and air-conditioned. The shower had immediate hot water and good water pressure.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small playground and pet area plus a clean spacious laundry area. It is close to town. There is a manatee center and Navy Seal Museum (but we didn’t explore either one) close by in addition to shops and restaurants in Fort Pierce. I was able to enjoy a 3-mile run to town and back on sidewalks.

This campground was more expensive than we usually like to spend but it was a convenient location for us to have dinner with a family friend. We arrived after the office was closed so did not have any interaction with staff but our check-in paperwork was readily available. We appreciate that we were tucked in at the rear of the property which lessened the road noise (and we didn’t have neighbors on either side of us). I would rate this three stars for our purposes but as it was well-kept and for others may suit their needs, it merits four stars in general.

Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

    Isolated but fun

Tons to do on property including little stores, bbq restaurant, pizza, ice cream etc. Horseback riding, petting zoo, rock climbing. BUT, my only complaint is the noise level of the area. Lots of boat noise, gas golf carts (big property) & it just happened that my neighbors loved their gas blowers & pressure washing lol. Lots of great sites to choose from. Nice staff. Pet friendly.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Simple and well maintained

Our visit was relaxing and enjoyable. We visited in July and the shade from all the trees around our site helped keep the heat tolerable. The camp site’s aren’t dispersed and a little close together but we didn’t have any immediate neighbors around us so it was perfect. We stayed on site 008 and it was spacious enough for our large cabin tent, picnic table, additional table, dog pool, chairs, etc. Our site is conveniently close to the bathrooms. I liked that there is only one main dumpster and it’s kept a distance from the camp sites. I think this helped keep any raccoons that may have been around away from the campers. AMAZING star gazing location.

    Mill Creek RV Resort

Little RV Nature Respite Surrounded by Concrete Jungle

I have to admit, when I first discovered Mill Creek RV Resort on our smartphone’s GPS, I had nothing but low expectations and when navigating to get to this seemingly RV road stand, all of the traffic and commercial real estate surrounding this place was just begging me to turn around and hightail it out of here. That was, until we decided to check out this RV parking spot. And we were somewhat pleasantly surprised by what we found. While easily not a destination, if your aim is to simply find comfortable, affordable and safe accommodations to roll up your mobile living room for the night, then (especially for the price), you won’t be disappointed.

To begin with, the community and neighbors you will meet are incredibly welcoming and the owners / management couldn’t be more hospitable. This place on the one hand has a small neighborhood feel (because it is partly carved out of a residential area) and on the other, feels like a semi-decent nature preserve where RV’s aren’t jam packed next to one another. Sure, it’s tight in a few places, but all-in-all, one feels safe and secure here and offered a number of pretty great and new amenities. And if you don’t have an RV, no worries, the good folks at Mill Creek RV Resort will rent you one of their newly built park models.

Mill Creek RV Resort offers a number of amenities, including: complete RV hook-ups (20 / 30 / 50 electric amp, water and sewage lines) with pull-through and back-in flat concrete slab sites, picnic tables, heated in-ground pool complete with lounge chairs and umbrellas, recreation hall with ping pong tables, coin-operated laundry facilities, very clean restroom and shower facilities, kid’s playground w/ slide, doggie park (one for small and another for large), mail center, cable TV access, free WiFi access (near the office only though) as well as indoor and outdoor games (e.g. horse shoes, shuffle board, corn hole), propane refill station, LP gas, cable TV access and even sheds for extra storage.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a handful: (1) This location puts you within short driving distance to Walt Disney World, Universal, Seaworld and a bunch of other family-friendly entertainment options; (2) When you get tired of paying for overpriced amusement park food or can’t muster enough strength to plan your next meal from the confines of what might be available in your RV fridge, then venture out to one of these nearby eateries: Coqui Snacks, Sol de Borinquen Bakery Restaurant & Deli or Dolce Bakery and Café; and (3) If you brought a kayak or canoe, I highly recommend launching in nearby Kissimmee Lakefront Park, where if you go to the far eastern side, you can cast a line and catch some pretty good fish.

    Happy Camping!

    Sebastian Inlet State Park Campground

    Primitive Camping @ BG Marina

We did not camp in the Sebastian Inlet State Park campground, but instead chose the primitive experience through BG Marina. There are 10 campsites at the marina that are great if you want a place to launch your boat and camp out between fishing trips. Each has a picnic table and fire pit. They are also well shaded. However, the sites are very close together and not private at all- it can get a little loud if crowded. There are clean bathrooms, access to water, but no showers.

Kilpatrick Hammock Campground — Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park

    Long way from nowhere

Expect a long travel to this remote site.   It’s a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways. The only designated dark sky site in Florida.   It does not disappoint for night sky viewing.   If you’re camping here, please be courteous and keep your outdoor lights to a minimum.  The night sky’s are just breathtaking.   Check www.spotthestation.nasa.gov to see if you’ll get a glimpse of the space station while your there.   Hiking/biking trails are plentiful.   Be aware that there’s a LOT of loose sand.   So even on a mountain bike you’ll have to walk now and then.   Great birding.  Crested cara cara are frequent as are flocks of turkey strolling through the campsites.   Be sure to head out the road you came in back to the first turn and take the trail to the left (as you’re leaving).   There’s a gator hole just 1/4 mile down the trail.  Nature trail is a nice hammock view.  No pets on that particular trail.

There are 2 camp loops only the first camp loop has a bath house, which is very nice.   The equestrian camp has porta potties.  Many of those folks drive over to the bathhouse.  Even the bathhouse has outdoor red lights.

    Resort at Canopy Oaks

Could be great but currently Meh.

So much potential. Pool, food, games, billiards, pizza, a store, golf cart rentals, big spaces, dog-friendly, premium spaces with beautiful pads and fire pits, brick fire pits or even grills. Lots of space and 3 free wireless devices for your stay.

Cabanas at the pool are stupid expensive, ($350 a day as of this writing). They sat empty for our entire 11 day stay. In our talks with other campers, no one has ever seen one in use except as a consolation to an upset camper. So technically never rented.

Lots of rules; some good and some bad. However, seemingly none are actually enforced. This leads to dogs off-leash running around (their camp site and yours). No clear paths to get across the back sides of the park, which leads to campers routinely cutting through your site to get from point A to point B.

The first 5 days of our stay were quiet. After that, the park started filling up and you could see the place slip into free-form mode.

The Wi-Fi was great when it worked, and you were almost always connected. BUT, dozens of times a day the internet just froze. Devices would bounce on and off the WiFi dozens of times in minutes, prompting you to confirm terms of service every-single-time. It got old and we bailed on the WiFi by day 4. Although there was a 24/7 support number for the WiFi, it was worthless. The hosting company (AccessParks) really couldn’t have cared less if the WiFi ever worked and it showed, but only after two waits on hold for 1.5+ hours each time.

The views were beautiful, and the golf carts are in great shape and well maintained. Water pressure was wonderful, and the sewer hookups on all available sewer sites were very well maintained and at the correct height for any camper, they are flush with the concrete pad on every site.

The pizza at the shop was very good, and the little store has some great gems. But the Tiki bar has ridiculously weird limited hours, and neither the food nor the bar are anywhere near the pool and game areas. No restaurant choices in the park for sit down dining.

The soda machines on the premises are supposed to be connected, allowing for credit card or Android Pay, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay options. Similarly, the laundry facilities are setup for digital payments. BUT, and it’s a big but, even the machines seem to suffer from the internet oddities of this location. Most work once in a while, but really just spin the little orb and time-out before saying something went wrong, try again later. So even the on-prem machines can’t connect to the internet….hmmm.

The dog parks are nice, but not policed at all. Lots of un-cleaned dog poop that we ended up picking up. People parking in them for hours using them as their own fenced yard.

This facility has so much that could go right, but just needs some more interaction from management to make it great.

We would come back, but hope that these things could be addressed.

    Road Runner Travel Resort

    GREAT PARK....VERY FRIENDLY

Our stay is and was great decided to stay 3 months. Having great time. Lots of fun, relaxing and great activities...☺️☺️☺️ pet friendly kid friendly

Guide to Melbourne

Sebastian Inlet State Park offers fishing and beach access cabins that range from basic to fully furnished units. The park's waterfront location creates opportunities for wildlife viewing with minimal light pollution. Some cabins near Melbourne provide direct water access, while inland options typically offer more amenities and year-round availability.

What to do

Water activities: At Sebastian Inlet State Park Campground, visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking directly from their cabin area. "This was our very first camping trip with our new camper. Absolutely beautiful state park with so much to do and see!!! From bird watching to swimming, to paddle boarding, to kayaking, the possibilities are endless!!!" notes Roiann C.

Wildlife viewing: Cabin rentals at Kilpatrick Hammock Campground provide access to one of Florida's premier wildlife observation areas with minimal light pollution. "The animals just weren't afraid of humans. Our 6 teenagers were so excited to stand face-to-face, only a few feet from gentle deer, bunnies, and turkeys. We even saw some lazy baby alligators sunning on the Military Trail," reports Roxxy G.

Astronomy: Cabins at Kilpatrick Hammock offer access to Florida's only designated dark sky site. "Expect a long travel to this remote site. It's a couple miles of reasonably decent dirt roads to get there, after several miles of remote highways. The only designated dark sky site in Florida. It does not disappoint for night sky viewing," explains David G.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Brevard County Park Wickham Campground maintains well-kept cabins with responsive staff. "I enjoyed my stay at his park. I booked last minute and was still able to get accommodations, the park rangers were so friendly and also moved me to a more shaded area when requested!" mentions Cat A.

Launch viewing: Cape Kennedy RV Resort cabins provide unique views of rocket launches from nearby Kennedy Space Center. "Stayed for the night to watch the SpaceX rocket launch. Great view as soon as it cleared the trees. Trees on-site have some beautiful Spanish moss," reports Daniel G.

Waterfront access: Sebastian Inlet cabins offer direct water access for fishing and wildlife observation. "This park is right on the water. We saw a giant sea turtle bigger than a manhole cover. We watched dolphins play at sunrise. We were parked right across from the water. My husband and the kids fished off the rocks," describes Nora B.

What you should know

Bug protection: Most cabin areas near Melbourne experience significant insect activity, especially no-see-ums. "The inlet has friendly, helpful rangers, easy to access campsites, and is in a beautiful location. Great for fishing, surfing, boating, and going to the beach. It's Florida though, so bring bug spray for the no-see-ums and mosquitoes," advises Suzanne A.

Limited supplies: Cabins at Kilpatrick Hammock require bringing all necessary supplies. "Be sure to fuel up and have plenty of groceries. Astronomers love this park. In fact, they have a designated campground just for them. Be sure to ONLY use flashlights with red lense so that you do not disrupt the star gazers," notes Annell N.

Varied amenities: Cabin amenities vary significantly between properties. "An overnight stay with 25ft RV for 94$ including taxes for a partial hook up. Lovely lady at reception helped us book over the phone few hours before our arrival but you can also drive up after the office closes, park in the overflow area & register/pay the next day. Very clean communal toilet/showers if slightly dated," explains Annabel F. at Sonrise Palms RV.

Tips for camping with families

Entertainment options: Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo provides extensive family activities beyond cabin accommodations. "We stayed in West Gate River Ranch for 2 nights over a weekend. The campsites are very well kept but note that they are not full hookups as they don't have sewer systems. The resort has many amenities for the family. They have a pool, air-boat rides, a rodeo (Saturdays only), petting zoo, and a fun area for kids with zip lines and other activities," shares Ilena R.

Cabin alternatives: Consider varying your accommodation types for a mixed experience. "Group of friends and family decided to stay on this gem, I was pleasantly surprised! Clean bathrooms and showers. Lots of amenities for kids like mini golf, zip lining and mechanical bull riding," notes Philip H.

Beach proximity: Cabins near ocean access provide multiple recreation options for children. "Amazing little campground right on the water. Clean restroom facilities. Close to beaches. People are friendly. If you're trying to surf or fish stay here!" recommends Brian C.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Jetty Park Canaveral Port Authority, selecting specific cabin sites can significantly impact your experience. "Had the perfect corner spot for us to set up. 3 women. Love Jetty Park. Beach all day!" shares Celeste N.

Transportation: Many larger cabin areas require supplemental transportation. "Bring your bikes as everything is a bit of a walk from the campground," advises Ilena R. regarding Westgate River Ranch Resort.

Scheduling considerations: Book cabins well in advance for rocket launch days. "Easy check in even though we arrived after hours! Very friendly. We had a shady spot with a concrete pad and full hookups. This campground does offer many types of camping! Bonus activities include seeing cruise ships leave pier and space launches!!" notes Cindy A.
