You can’t get more centrally located that bill Frederick. Located In metro west, this park is close to both the theme parks, and a commutable distance to north Orlando. The campground is at the back of the park up against the lake shore making it quieter than you would think for being so close to the expressway. The bathrooms and shower leave something to be desired. They could be cleaner and the shower drains tend to back up but everything works and is serviced daily. Only campground downside is there are no fire pits by each site. Open fire is only allowed at the grills, in another area of the park.
A nice bike trail circles the whole park. RV’ers must use dump site to get rid of black and grey water. No sewer hookup.
This park fills up when events like renaissance fair or dragon boat racing come through.
This park offers every recreation in the book: boating, fishing, biking, hiking, frisbee golf, wildlife watching (petting farm), jungle gyms, horse boarding, grilling spots, swimming pool. There’s something here for everyone.
We stayed here a lot when we first moved to Florida and loved it. We stayed in the tent ⛺️ area because it was the most cost effective. What you should know about the tent area is that it is not drive up, you have to walk a short distance to your site.
One thing that we loved about the location is that it is close to all of the attractions. We actually walked home from Universal Studios to our campsite one night.
Some other things to know you can only stay for 14 days at a time and only 14 days in a month. This was an issue for us as we were working in the area and camping full time. This seemed to be the case with all of the county parks in the area, so we had to move every two weeks.
Apparently you can stay longer in the RV Park, but they wouldn’t let us with our roof top tent. They went as far as to say that it is illegal. We looked into it latter and found that not to be true. Apparently it is illegal in Orlando to camp in a tent within city limits. This does not apply to roof top tents though as they are not on the ground. They were a bit rude about the whole thing and after being lied to, it left a bad taste in our mouths.
Remember that the tent sites are not drive up? Yea, we couldn’t use our roof top tent there either, fortunately we carried a ground tent too.
Some other things to know, the tent sites are close to the highway/ turnpike so there is always traffic noise. Some weekends and during breaks it is a training ground for high school rowing teams (you are not allowed to use a canoe in the lake either, but somehow rowing is ok) and there are competitions. So it can be busy then and noisy in the morning when they are training and competing.
Don’t look too closely at the girls in their tight athletic outfits either. Our neighbor got tossed out for that and complaining about their littering (which was a legitimate complaint there were water bottles littered everywhere when they were there).
So those are the pros and cons. In spite of the negative stuff we would and have gone there again as it is a nice spot.
I live within a hours drive from this park and have been camping here for 40 plus years. This State Park is Old Florida, sites are secluded from the other sites compared to many other parks. There is a abundance of wildlife and plenty of hiking trails. This park to me is one of the best you will experience in Florida.
We decided to book a group primitive campsite in this state park. We were in the primitive group campsite on the Buster Island Loop. It was about 3 miles to hike in to the site. The path is very clear with markers and when you arrive at the site, there is a clear indicator to follow. The path to the site is right off the main trail.
Since this is a primitive site, there are no facilities and keep in mind you need to bring your own water for drinking, cooking, cleaning etc. At the site there were two picnic tables and a fire ring which was enough for our group. The area was cleared with a lot of space to set up all of our tents. We were here in late April when the weather was getting warmer so remember to bring mosquito repellent and enough water for your whole group to stay hydrated!
The hiking trails are loops about 6 miles long where you can experience different types of Florida environments and boating on the lake. And there are also history demonstrations showing the old Florida cowboys at the park.
All in all, this park has many options and activities. Whether you are into water sports or biking and hiking, this park has it all.
This review relates to River Ranch RV Resort, which is next to the Westgate property. I would personally not stay at the Westgate RV since it is basically just an open field with RV spots.
River Ranch RV next door is a beautiful place with fantastic spots. We stayed in spot 323 which had its own swing and fireplace. Our 37 ft rig fit perfectly and five year old loved riding bike around the park. Everyone was super friendly and I recommend renting a golf cart, though expensive at $60 a day,
Be aware of telephone phone reception. At our spot we could not get any reception with ATT. After buying a Verizon hotspot down the road in Lake Wales, we were able to WFH.a
Would highly recommend this spot in Central Florida.
This lovely state park in Central Florida gives campers the true feel of "old Florida!" Campsites are private, separated by lots of flora. Animals are abundant - wild turkeys, eagles, bobcats, AND the Florida Panther!
While sitting in our screen gazebo, I was awed by the passing of a male panther about 25 yards from our campsite. Wild turkeys visited us daily to hang out by a fallen tree near our site. Deer passed by every evening.
If you are seeking peace, quiet and beauty this is the place!
First time at Lake Kissimmee State Park! We loved it. We arrived just before sun down. First of all the drive into the park is beautiful. Classic Florida landscape and made us so excited to start camping. We were in loop 1 site 13. The sites are pretty private we couldn’t see the campers to the sides of us and they are very large. Bathrooms were very clean. Best part was all the wildlife we encountered. In the morning a family of deer walked right by our tent! There are three main hiking trails up to 6.7 miles. We did the 6 mile loop and it was beautiful and peaceful. Primitive hike in campsites available along the trails which we will be checking out for next time. Reservation was easily made through reservation America.
This park was clean, quiet and well kept. The bath house was tidy and the hot water was HOT. There are numerous trails, an observation tower, playground, boat ramp and fishing area. A replica 1870s Florida cow camp is also located on one of the trails. The sites are level and nearly all are shaded. The electric and water were good and the dump station had a hose to help with wash out. There is a small camp store with a few necessities but if you forget something there is a Dollar General about 20 minutes away.
Lake Kissimmee State Park and Westgate River Ranch Resort offer dedicated equestrian camping options near Rockledge, Florida. Located in central Florida about 1.5 hours west of Rockledge, these destinations provide campers with opportunities for trail riding through natural Florida ecosystems. The region's subtropical climate allows for year-round equestrian activities with average winter temperatures around 65°F and summer temperatures reaching the mid-90s with high humidity.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Lake Kissimmee State Park campers report abundant wildlife sightings throughout the camping areas. "Animals are abundant - wild turkeys, eagles, bobcats, AND the Florida Panther! While sitting in our screen gazebo, I was awed by the passing of a male panther about 25 yards from our campsite," reports Barbara J. at Lake Kissimmee State Park Campground.
Rodeo attendance: The weekly rodeo at Westgate River Ranch Resort provides entertainment for horse enthusiasts. "We really enjoyed the rodeo," notes Susan K., who visited Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo. Another visitor mentions, "The boys loved the rodeo that was held on the weekend. They even got to participate in chasing the calf to win a prize."
Trail riding: Multiple biking and horse trails wind through both parks. "Beautiful shaded sites and long biking/ trails," writes Alexandra E. about Lake Kissimmee State Park. The park features several miles of multi-use trails through pine flatwoods and wetlands.
Private, spacious campsites: Campers consistently praise the generous site spacing at Lake Kissimmee. "Campsites are far enough apart for privacy with lots of shades trees. Each site has a firepit," notes Stephanie G. Another camper mentions, "This site was very large, mostly level, with beautiful trees surrounding the site and great privacy."
Clean facilities: Visitors appreciate the well-maintained amenities. "Like all state parks the bathrooms were spotless and rivaled those of a Marriott," writes Perry J. about Lake Kissimmee State Park. At Bill Frederick Park, despite being in an urban setting, visitors note "free showers with hot water" as a "huge plus."
Family-friendly activities: Beyond horseback riding, these parks offer numerous recreational options. A visitor to Westgate River Ranch shares, "We went to the rodeo on Saturday night, did a swamp buggy ride, skeet shooting, petting zoo and rode a mechanical bull... and there was still more we could have done but ran out of time."
Limited connectivity: Cell service can be unreliable in more remote equestrian camping areas. One Lake Kissimmee visitor warns, "Cell service is practically non existent in the park and within 10 miles from the park. Keep an eye on gas, there's one place about 6 miles from the park and town is about 15 miles away."
Seasonal operations: Some amenities operate on limited schedules. "Cow camp is only open Oct-May. Only 30amp hook up and no sewer, but there is a dump station," explains Corey K. The Cracker Shack store at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake also operates on limited hours.
Cost considerations: Prices vary significantly between basic equestrian camping and resort experiences. "The prices are a little expensive, other than that lots of fun," notes Jennifer K. about Westgate River Ranch. Budget-conscious campers might prefer state parks, with primitive sites at Bill Frederick Park costing as little as $10 per night.
Rental options: Consider golf carts for larger equestrian facilities. "Bring your bikes as everything is a bit of a walk from the campground," suggests Ilena R. Another visitor confirms, "You need a golf cart or bikes to get around," noting the expansive layout of Westgate River Ranch Resort.
Educational experiences: Horse-oriented demonstrations provide learning opportunities. "The idea of cowboys in Florida was unexpected, but added a unique element to the park," shares Sara S., who visited Lake Kissimmee State Park. The park's historical cowboy camp offers insights into Florida's ranching heritage.
Activity planning: Schedule structured activities between trail rides. "We were able to fish right off the dock at our site, there was a fit pit and grill, as well as seating outside," notes Tina S. about her family's experience combining equestrian and water activities.
Site selection concerns: RVers should check for low-hanging branches when selecting horse camping sites. "If you have a tall rv low hanging branches in the camp area might be an issue," warns Corey K. Another camper advises, "Be careful of low hanging tree branches when backing in," specifically for sites at Lake Kissimmee State Park.
Utility limitations: Many equestrian camping areas have partial hookups only. "Most of the spots are fully shaded with trees. Spot 9 is fully concrete," notes a reviewer about Lake Kissimmee. For those requiring full hookups, "You can get a RV site through Westgate which is more of a field or through River Ranch RV Resort which has full hook-ups."
