Best Cabin Camping near Keenesburg, CO

My family and I stayed here for one night in a 34' travel trailer as a reward from crossing Kansas. :) We knew what we were getting into - a tight family campground, so we weren't disappointed in that regard. It's actually a little hard to write this review because there's such a mix of pros and cons. I think listing them out will be the best strategy.

Cons: 

- VERY close to the interstate. Take a look at a satellite map view so you will come prepared. The road noise is ever present, and if you can tune it out you will be a much happier camper. We were able to sleep ok with it, but it was a constant in our experience.

- Proximity to your neighbor. This is the way it is with KOAs, but it did feel strange hooking up utilities within arm's reach of your neighbors having dinner.

- Wifi. They advertise it, but it was so slow that not once was I able to successfully load a single webpage. Verizon is also not strong here.

- Cable. They had hook-ups but quality was too poor to watch.

- The hot tub was closed with no indication when it will open. 

Pros:

-The playground was pretty awesome, large and with multiple things to climb on for kiddies.

- They had a pool and kiddie pool. Both are small, though.

- The game room is really nice! (see pics)

- Pizza and ice cream on site.

- Affordable laundry. $2.50 for wash and 50 cents for 8 minutes for the dryer.

- Clean and tastefully decorated bathrooms and showers.

Other:

- Pancake and sausage breakfast on the weekends for $6.50.

- A BBQ restaurant run by the campground.

- 40 minutes to Denver. 

- Dog park.

Overall, not a bad experience, just not spectacular.

I was looking for a quiet place to get away from Denver but I wasn't able to take off on a long drive to get there, then I found this place. A flower farm, with rows of beautiful blooming flowers, a natural pool, a Jacuzzi, and a beautiful view of the Rocky Mtns? Sounds perfect for a midweek getaway to me!

When I pulled up, Terry came out to meet me and give me a tour. He took me to the tent spot and I quickly realized that they didn't get many tent campers, they mostly received RV and AirB&B guests. The tent site was big enough to fit a couple tents (or a large family tent) but there wasn't a bathroom or even many places you could nature pee around the area. Terry informed me that they don't have bathrooms yet, but they are in the process of turning the old silo's into bathrooms and potentially another bedroom to rent out. That should be done by the end of the Summer. 

Then he gave me a tour of the pool and the flower shop. The land here is just incredible! They only bought this property 9 years ago and only started growing flowers on it 6 years ago and it has obviously transformed into a stunning landscape. The flower storage was filled with stunning colors and smells of all the assorted flowers they grow on the farm. Meg came out later to say hi and tell me a little about the events they host on the property. 

The natural pool was beautiful! I was the only camper there so I had free reign of the place. I lounged for a bit on a float in the water until I had a friendly visitor in the water with me, A small king snake (the good kind of snake) was cooling down in the water and when we saw each other we both ran the other way. See my video of an alternative use for the morsel spork...:-) I didn't see him again the rest of the time out there. Terry laughed at my tomfoolery and said they normally don't come near in the water, but he likes knowing they are out there since they eat rattlesnakes.

As the sun went down I took my book into the hot tub and relaxed for a bit. While Terry and Meg's kids rode around on the golf cart and jumped on the trampoline on the other side of the property, it was very soothing to hear the quiet laughter and fun being had by a beautiful family and yet still feel like I had my privacy. 

All in all it was a beautiful stay at a lovely location. I would recommend this place for a girl's day trip, bridal shower, or bachelorette location too! It is screaming to be filled with sundresses and mimosas. RV camping or even staying at the AirB&B would probably be ideal for your stay until they get the bathrooms built.

The views, wildlife, and geology in the park are astounding---add to that the yellow aspens in the fall and you have classic Colorado camping not far from Denver. There are a lot of different options: typical state park camp sites, cabins, and a yurt, as well as backpacking/backcountry sites. We did the yurt in the winter and it was amazing, but make sure you have a jeep (or similar) and bring everything you need.

This was my first time staying at a KOA campground and I was blown away by the amenities offered here. Upon first pulling up to the campground, I was met by a security checkpoint and was directed to the main office to register and obtain a car pass. The attention to detail and security measures were another surprise to me, as I have always been more accustomed to primitive campgrounds. As previously mentioned, I was astounded by the variety of amenities offered to guests including wifi, a pool, mini golf, a massive playground, arcade, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits and more. This all in addition to the usual premium campground amenities such as showers, laundry facilities, RV dump station, camp sinks, an office store with basic goods and snacks, etc. 

This campground is super family friendly and seems to be much more focused on offering RV sites and cabin type lodging. As I am a tent camper, my review will be focused on what is offered for those at a tent site. There are 5 tent sites, which are only available from May 1stto September 30th. The sites are rather close together but in a lovely location right along the lake. The sites cost $45/night on week days and $50/night on weekends for one or two people with a single vehicle, additional guests cost $10/night, additional car $5/night and fire ring rentals are $5/night. Tent sites include a parking spot, a raised and level tent platform, picnic table and grill. Open fires, hammocks and clotheslines are not allowed even at the tent sites. 

Overall, this campground provides a very family oriented environment with luxurious amenities. This campground would be a great option for those wanting a camping experience without having to “rough it” whatsoever. The RV sites and cabin lodging also provide unique options for those not wanting to sleep in a tent. The price for tent camping seemed a bit steep for me, but made sense considering all of the facilities offered. The location just outside of Fort Collins provides easy access to town while still allowing for a more rural experience.

Hiked about 2.5 miles into a back country shelter site. It was quiet and secluded but only a short walk from a small lake and a historical cabin site. Loved it!

This is a very popular Colorado State Park and campground for alot of reasons! The park has campsites for all sizes, shapes and styles of campers, trailers, tents and has cabins and yurts to rent as well. I like loop B for the pull throughs and nice spacing between sites. Loop D is a favorite as well , it’s close to the restrooms with showers and laundry. The park fills up quickly over the summer weekends ( reservations required) but I check for cancellations ... you never know or try for weekdays if you can.

Have stayed here in a tent, in a yurt, and in a cabin. All are great! Bathrooms clean. At 10,000 feet, it can be colder than you expect and watch out for the altitude effects! Yurts are wayyy fun.

Camped in a cabin which was clean. I will camp here again!!

Note: If the GPS takes you to a dirt road with a closed gate at the end, get back on the highway and take the next exit to the park entrance.

Clean and well maintained campground. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our site was well spaced from our neighbors, but other areas were fairly dense. Electric hookup worked, but no water at the site, and "public water" in the area was a broken water fountain. We filled up at the dump station. Shower house was close, only open 6am to 10pm, pay showers minimum $2. Excessive road noise during the day, it did quiet down each night. If we stay here again we will stay nearer to the entrance or get a cabin.

Well, sorta camping if you consider a yurt camping. This was the perfect winter getaway for winter hiking. Unfortunately there was not enough snow to cross country ski as advertised. Overall the park has nice trails and some elevation gain. It made for a nice quick getaway.

This was only a 15 min drive from our house, right off the highway! Campsites we’re clean and numbered but very close together with no trees to separate you from your neighbor. They have a nice lake for swimming (gravel beach) with paddle board, kayak, and paddle boat rentals. We did the paddle boards for $20 an hour (seemed a little high for an hour) but it was so much fun! The view of Red Rocks was a treat!

One other note, most of Colorado has a fire ban because of the lack of rain and wildfires. We were able to still have a fire, which is a MUST for camping :) but still be careful of course!

Campground Review

My friends and I live in Boulder and this spot is a nice retreat about 90 minutes away near Fort Collins and is a good place to enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities.

The campground is quite spacious and offers a lot of staying options. RV, car, cabins, tent – all of those kinds of sites are available. They opened a newly renovated information center about a year ago, and it’s a great place to stop in to plan out your activities in the area and make sure you have any questions answered by park ranger staff. You could very well just show up here to camp without much of a plan and after a visit to the center have more than a few ideas. They have maps.

This area has boat ramps, rock climbing nearby, and even some caves to explore. You could find some bike and hike trails too without much effort. We were there as part of a large group, so we rented three cabins near the water. Each cabin comes with a bunk bed and a double. A basic, summer camp-like mattress for each. They also have combined A/C Heater unit. I didn’t see showers here, but there were primitive toilets with TP. I noticed even the basic tent campsites came with a fire pit and picnic table.

We opted for some hikes near the campsite while some others went climbing.

Ranger Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I am given product to test from time to time. For the last 2 months I've been testing out the Renogy Multi-Functional Solar Backpack. You can watch the video review here.

This is a 20L backpack with a lot of compartments best suited for those needing a daily activity/commuter bag. If you're looking for a true hiking/backpacking pack with solar panels, I recommend checking out Renogy's stand-alone panels.

How does it work?

The solar panel is slightly larger than a regular piece of paper (11.3" x 9.7") and can be configured to face inward when not in use for protection from abrasions. When in use, it provides a USB port to charge from (max output 1.2A and can charge a phone in 2.5 hrs.

Here's the thing: Renogy recommends you use the set up to charge to a power-bank, rather than directly to devices and I completely agree. This is because even in the best light, directly connected to my phone I was only able to maintain my power level, not improve it. I found out the panel is pretty sensitive because in partially cloudy conditions I could hear my phone beep when it would go on/off charge. Sometimes it would beep at me a few times a minute. With a power bank, you can still charge devices but also build up reserve power so at night you can recharge your electronics.

Who should buy this bag?

Anyone who wants a comfortable day pack with lots of storage options and loves the idea you can grab free energy to recharge your devices. I use it for all my media projects as it carries all my cameras, cables, and tripods plus in compartments so they aren't knocking into each other and the weight stays distributed evenly. Just check out the amount of stuff I put in this thing! It has pockets everywhere, and includes an option to slide this through larger luggage's extendable handles, making it a great carry on bag if you need to travel by a plane. You will need a different bag for long expeditions because you need more than a 20L pack for that, plus this bag lacks chest and hip straps.

Verdict?

If you're in the market for a 15-20L day pack and want something that provides power, buy this. Especially if you're outside a lot. The bag is lasting very well, the panel is going strong even after I spilled beer on it (it's waterproof and obviously it was an accident as I would never waste beer), it's comfortable, and I like how versatile I can configure it for all my stuff. In some social or business settings the solar panel isn't the greatest thing to be showing off, so it's great you can hide that away. Last I checked electricity isn't coming from a magic bean field, and I love how I'm able to go greener now by getting energy for my devices from the sun.

Great place to get away from the hustle bustle of the city yet close enough to get there quickly

This is a great campground for a quick getaway! The full hookup sites are few, but the campground is lively, lots of aspen trees and shade. Fishing nearby is stocked and great for children/novice as the fish hit fast

We stayed here for a total of 4 days and loved it! Bike paths were plentiful, a lake to swim in. They also had paddle board rentals for a good price, which we did and had a blast! Playground at the campground was perfect for my son as well! It’s now on our list of favorites!

Close proximity to the highway. Clean level spots. Geared more towards RV camping. Pros: great views of the foothills. Lots of park amenities like horse stables, archery range, swim beach, boat rentals, hiking trails, picnic areas. Con: Orange glow of Home Depot sign at night and no shade during the day. Your camping reservation (strongly recommended) includes park admission.

This campground was better than expected--the tent sites were well spaced for privacy, and even on a busy weekend, we felt like we had our own space to enjoy nature. We were right on the waters edge, and the view in the morning was incredible, looking out over the lake with mountains in the background. There was plenty to do there on site--hiking, cooking out, a designated swimming area, and even boat rentals. The nearby town was about 20 minutes, which made for a easy grocery shopping trip. Some essentials and food items were available to purchase on site.

It was absolutely beautiful the time of year I went. It didn’t feel like I was in Colorado, it felt like I was in a sea of gold. So beautiful and so out of the way. It seemed like no one knew about it!

We love to visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park early in the season because it is very busy all summer.  This is our second stay at the park in March, and we have had wonderful snow both times.  

The Reverends Ridge campground has limited sites available this time of year but is still well maintained.  The campground office restrooms were open, heated and clean.  Trash dumpsters were available as were recycling cans. The electric hookups were on. There is no water available except in the restrooms. 

The campsite (C-35) parking area was plowed open to exactly the width of our trailer, so with more than three feet of snow on the ground we needed to get some exercise and do a bit of shoveling so we could back in and be able to walk along side the trailer and open the door! .More snow was falling as we set up but the scenery was absolutely magical.  About 25 yards of more shovel work made it so we could find and dig out both the table and fire pit provided.  We had a warming fire going in no time.  

Golden Gate is a wildlife paradise and as we worked we could hear Turkeys calling form the trees.  We were also graced with the presence of four huge Moose who had taken up residency and were lounging in the snow.  In the distance we could hear the yips and howls of coyotes.  

Snow graced us for the first of our Friday to Sunday stay, but warmer temperatures  arrived Saturday afternoon and the great daytime thaw and evening freeze common to Colorado mountains in springtime began in earnest.  This made for some cautious walking around the snow piled nearly everywhere. 

One of the great things about this park is the winter activities available on the many trails, and the added benefit of Nederland, Black Hawk, and Central City Colorado being within easy driving distance for some small town amenities if desired.  This is a great park, and my wife is wishing to visit when there is no snow!   😎

This was our first time staying at Bear Creek Lake. The park is not part of the Colorado Wilds or CPW State Park system, but daily vehicle fees are included with your camping reservation. Our towed vehicle was included when we checked in at the ranger station.

The campground is at the back of the park, roughly 2 miles from the entrance. There is a lot of bike traffic and windy roads. Sites are mostly level, electric only, and relatively close together. We stayed in Site 41 which was walking distance to the pit toilets and water spigot. We had no trouble fitting our 29' Class C, tow dolly, and towed vehicle. 

We filled our 7 gallon water jugs at the spigot to top off our fresh water tank. The spigot is the terrible skinny faucet that is not threaded as to dissuade RVers from connecting a fill hose to it. If you want to fill water jugs like we did, bring a short (<6') hose and a water bandit so that you don't waste water.

Pit toilets and flush bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The bath house at the center of the campground features coin operated hot showers, $2 for 10 minutes. The water temperature was very hot, but manageable. A great convenience since there are no sewer hookups at the sites.

This is a great place to camp if you want to explore Morrison, Golden, or catch a show at Red Rocks. The main park entrance closes at 9:30 and a back gate accessible from I-470 opens that allows access to the campground. We had no trouble getting an Uber to pick us up to go to Red Rocks, but had several driver cancellations trying to get back after a concert.

Late October is very unpredictable in Colorado for a camper who is primarily a tent camper. That probably wasn't the best formula for me to pick up a friend at the airport and head out for our first camping experience. Heading out from the airport it was brisk but do-able, by the time we had arrived at the turn off we started to notice a rapid dip in temperatures. We opted to check out Look Out Mountain before heading to the campsite and well that is when everything went sideways.

I had already reserved a space at the campsite and it was a little early to try to check in so I thought, no big deal we will get some sight seeing out of the way. Little did we know that it was about to start a random snow.

We went in and when we came out huge flakes!! The temps had dropped even more!

Long story short, my friend having never camped before was not about to start with that. I was a little freaked out but only had $18 invested.

We went ahead and drove to the campsite to see if I could get refunded and to see if there was anything worth seeing before we tried to run away from the snow. The campsite was amazing!! I wish I had found it a day earlier in fact before the snows because I had instead opted for a much less awesome site closer to the airport.

The sites were placed nicely so you would have plenty of room, the grounds were maintained to a very high standard and overall it was just very impressive. Even in the snow it was looking like a place that was just waiting to be explored.

After speaking to someone they were kind enough to refund my money, which I wasn't fully expecting but I was very happy to know they were willing to do based on the conditions. They wanted our first trip to the site to be one that left a positive feeling not a negative one so they that was very kind.

TIPS:

• Ideal times to go here are between May and early September, anytime after that they get random weather.
• Checkout all the things this campground has to offer during season there are a lot of educational programs designed for families.
