Standley Lake Regional Park, near Westminster, Colorado, is a solid choice for those looking to camp close to the city while enjoying the great outdoors. The campground offers spacious sites, perfect for tents, RVs, or even glamping, making it a versatile spot for different camping styles.

One of the highlights here is the stunning lake, which provides a beautiful backdrop for your stay. Visitors rave about the mountain views and the chance to rent paddleboards and kayaks for some fun on the water. As one camper put it, “5 stars because of the lake, Mountain Views, and it not being far from town.”

You can expect to see wildlife, including nesting bald eagles, which adds a unique touch to your camping experience.

Beautiful water but no shaded areas

The lack of trees here is concerning. I did admire the beautiful water. The ramp is very short and you cant go into the water. If you planned on taking the kiddos :(

Overall great!

We had two vehicles we camped in and used one of the tv pull through spots. Trying to reserve online was a bit of a challenge (may have been user error) but I was able to call and the ranger I talked was very helpful in getting a reservation day of and answering all the questions I had. Perfect for a spontaneous overnight trip, we were wishing we would have brought paddleboard and fishing gear but next time! Bathrooms were clean even with all the camper everyone was very nice and quiet!

Nice but no privacy

If you are used to RV sites or KOA you will be ok with this. On a scale of 1-5 here are my impressions.

  1. Site cleanliness. 5
  2. Bathrooms 5. Running H20
  3. Convenience 2. They lock the gates at 10pm.
  4. Electric 1
  5. Water hookups none 1 Overall esthetic 2. The lake is nice. The rest of the area is well compacted dirt with some scattered trees. City/road noise 2.

Depends on What You’re Aiming For

Stayed two nights in July. Apparently quiet time is just a phrase here — multiple groups around us were loud well past 10pm but nobody came around to check. Bathroom access was an issue in the AM due to only one stall.

Not a lot of shade, ground kinda pebbly. If you’re looking for a quick post up near Denver or Boulder, sure. If you’re looking for peaceful camping, you could do far better. I suppose it’d be different in an RV, but tenting wasn’t good.

Either way, if you stay here, bring good earplugs.

Great place close to Denver

The campsites are very large. There’s no hook ups for water, electric or dump sites although there are water spigots that can be used to fill fresh water. The shower is an outdoor shower. Seems like there’s almost always a spot open during weekdays.

Customer service and conservative

The sites are really big and the person who took our reservations was so kind. The ranger crew is serious about conserving the area’s natural eco system, but still very inviting and kind!

Nesting Bald Eagles

I don’t know how you could not like a place with a huge lake that bald eagles nest beside. With a rookery, this is the spot for bird enthusiasts!

Oasis in the heart of the burbs!

Tranquil exotic oasis right smack in the middle of Suburban Arvada! Who would have known!?

But here I am sneaking off in the morning with a paddle board and kayak atop my car to get in a morning of lovely peaceful Zen Joy in the designated "Quiet" waters on the Northwest shores of Standley. Views of Longs Peak and the Indian Peaks can be seen to the West. I paddle with my friend and large smiles in the calm waters, heading toward Bird Island- you can hear the ruckus of Cormorants, Grebes, Heron, and others birds all marking their space. It almost feels like I am in Costa Rica or someplace exotic! I love watching them in flight with their wings expanded, coming in for a landing, sometimes awkward but always interesting. Inside the visitor center there is a large "Eagle Cam" TV with live footage of the endangered Bald eagles nesting their eaglets. Several times a day if you're patient you can view them being fed. Something to see. If you don't have a paddle craft they rent them there. You can rent a kayak, a paddle board, a canoe, or a paddle bicycle on a pontoon! Take a friend and a picnic for a lovely day on this beautiful lake right here in Arvada. Your worries fall away and you can experience the joy in nature around you. Maybe weird but true!

First time Pop Up Camping

We got site 47, which is labeled as an RV site, but it is NOT suitable for pop up campers. the site doesn’t have even a hint of a levelable spot. the rangers weren’t very helpful the first night, and we had to speak with the head ranger to get permission to setup on our friends site, #46, which is a great size and worlds more level! You can’t swim/wade in the lake unless you’re participating in water sports, so that’s a bummer. they do have canoes, paddle bikes, and paddle boards for rent though. It’s an easy site to get to, and is in the middle of the Denver suburbs.

Open field

Was pretty unimpressed with this campground. We showed up without reservations and there were many open sites but the only ones available without a reservation were in the middle of a field and shared a driveway with the site next door. So, no privacy. Wind was pretty intense since we were in the middle of the field, make sure if you have a tent it is well tied in. Most of our stakes came out despite being hammered in, we relied on luggage in the tent to keep it down.

Simple campground

This campground was very plain. The campsites were wide-open, meaning there was little privacy. The restrooms were mostly clean, but we couldn't find any showers. There are 12 first come, first serve campsites, and the rest must be reserved. We loved seeing lots of stars at night.
