The region experiences hot summers and cold winters, with most campgrounds like St. Vrain State Park open year-round. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer months when weekend spots fill quickly. The proximity to I-25 means easy access but can bring highway noise to some camping areas. Water features are common at several locations, though mosquitoes can be problematic during warmer months. One camper noted, "It is near I-25 highway so there is road traffic noise but becomes background noise after a day or so. But if that bothers you you won't like it."

Campers frequently mention the fishing opportunities available at several campgrounds in the region, particularly at St. Vrain State Park with its network of ponds. Wildlife viewing represents another popular activity, with many sites offering birding opportunities along walking trails. Despite being close to urban areas, several campgrounds maintain natural settings with water features, though tree cover varies significantly between locations. The mix of full hookup and basic sites accommodates different camping styles and budgets. A reviewer described St. Vrain as "an odd place for a state park as it's RIGHT off I25. On the plus side you're close to food and access. On the bad side you have interstate noise constantly. Sites are level, many concrete, and spaced nicely apart, clean facilities, quiet campground."

    LaVern M. Johnson Park

    Downtown Lyons

Nice campground downtown Lyons and on the river. Full hookups. Tents sites right next to the river. Slow and not reliable wifi but 5G. Showers nearby closed and further showers you need to pay for. Very nice camp host. I will return.

    Applewood RV Resort by Rjourney

    Great hiking and biking trails

The park was okay if you are looking for something overnight. And very expensive and very crowded and no room between rigs. Looks like fulltime living in some spaces. It does have laundry service. And it has a great park just beside it. And there are beautiful hiking and biking trails right next to the facility. And it is very dog friendly.

    Allenspark Dispersed Camp Spot

    Great spot, quiet

Good spot, this is my second time staying here. You have to drive through a neighborhood to get to the serving road. Follow the directions on Google and you’ll be fine. The best spots are a little further back. The road will come to a Y go left. Once you go left down be hill you’ll go back up a hill and go around the curve to the right. There’s a creek on the left and great spots.

South Bay Campground — Horsetooth Reservoir

    Eh… it’s ok

For what you’re paying for it could be better. Vault bathrooms are not clean and smell awful. Look I know they smell and are dirty but people do your part to close the lid and clean up afterwards. Showers are good but you have to pay $2 per shower Dump is $15 too! Good cycling around here Cell service is ok. Sometimes drops. Verizon and att People working here are very friendly and helpful. Leave it better than you found it.

    Fort Collins Lakeside KOA

Central to Fort Collins and the Northern Denver Area

I had a medical emergency and had to stay in the area for a few days. After one night in the hospitals parking lot we found this KOA nearby. The camp ground staff were impressive in their help and understanding. They said they would make sure we had a site for our 45’ bus. Once in the site they continued to show care for how I was doing to the point of holding our site in case we needed to stay longer. I could not ask for better customer service. I give Mandi and Mark solid 10’s!

Now the bad. Many sites, like ours lack grass or weeds to keep down the dirt and mud. Tree stumps are left protruding inches above the soil level leading to a tripping hazard on the way to the restrooms and shower house. We had exposed roots in our site. I cannot imagine that the owners would not see these hazards and want to remove them for safety. Our elderly dog tripped and fell on one such stump. Sites are fairly close together.

For the price, I expect nice grassy areas not just at the sites but other larger expanses of areas around the park. I think the owner can do much better ascetically.

We would stay again but only for the customer service.

    A-Lodge Boulder - Car Camping

Quiet, cozy, very close to Boulder. Only 3 van/car spots

Overall vibe and convenience to Boulder rate 4 stars. Although there was a wedding one evening, it was mellow & over, with folks dispersing, by around 8pm. Minimal bugs so we did not use screens for a good part of the time, the overall land the site is on, is long and narrow and so parking/car traffic can be a little tight. We did go out the exit on far side and drove down the hill back to the entrance which necessitated more than 180 degree turn, so try to avoid that. Three clean bathrooms, 1 men's with 2 toilet stalls and shower (toilet stall were very small--knees bumped against door), 2 co-ed bathrooms (one with toilet/sink/shower, one with toilet & sink only). One sink in co-ed had very hot water coming out of both faucets (no cold from this sink). Paper towel dispensers ran out and were empty for a day but then roll of paper towels appeared.

Wifi was spotty & disconnected regularly, no Verizon service. There is a small 'store' in office: A fridge with drinks and burritos, some shelves with some Mountain House dinners, and snack bars. There is a pool, dry sauna with great LARGE window looking at creek, and hot-tub (sauna worked great). Did not get a chance to see any of the rooms. Tent sites are up a VERY steep path and on platforms on side of hill (perhaps 50-60' up the hill?). There's an area with some slack lines set up, as well as electric vehicle charging stations.
