Camping near Keenesburg, Colorado ranges from tent sites to full-hookup RV campgrounds, with options for different budgets and comfort levels. St. Vrain State Park Campground, located in Firestone about 20 miles northwest of Keenesburg, provides both tent and RV camping with electric hookups and full-service options. Several privately owned campgrounds like M+M Dream and Udder Joy and Milkiness complement the state park options. Most developed campgrounds in the region accommodate tent and RV camping, with some offering glamping alternatives for those seeking more comfort.

Road access to campgrounds around Keenesburg is generally good with many sites designed for drive-in access. The region experiences hot summers and cold winters, with most campgrounds like St. Vrain State Park open year-round. Many campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer months when weekend spots fill quickly. The proximity to I-25 means easy access but can bring highway noise to some camping areas. Water features are common at several locations, though mosquitoes can be problematic during warmer months. One camper noted, "It is near I-25 highway so there is road traffic noise but becomes background noise after a day or so. But if that bothers you you won't like it."

Campers frequently mention the fishing opportunities available at several campgrounds in the region, particularly at St. Vrain State Park with its network of ponds. Wildlife viewing represents another popular activity, with many sites offering birding opportunities along walking trails. Despite being close to urban areas, several campgrounds maintain natural settings with water features, though tree cover varies significantly between locations. The mix of full hookup and basic sites accommodates different camping styles and budgets. A reviewer described St. Vrain as "an odd place for a state park as it's RIGHT off I25. On the plus side you're close to food and access. On the bad side you have interstate noise constantly. Sites are level, many concrete, and spaced nicely apart, clean facilities, quiet campground."

South Bay Campground — Horsetooth Reservoir

      Urban Camping on Horsetooth Resevoir

Nice flat sites on the water. Beautiful surroundings with geese, bats, and deer visiting the site daily. Easy water access for SUPs and kayaks. The road is noisy but becomes background noise but there’s also a high voltage power buzzing above site 45. We had 44 and 45 and the kids had plenty of space to run around the sites were fairly private. It also was cooler at the site than the surrounding area and we had a nice breeze coming of the res and some shade from trees.

      Gopher Gulch RV and Campground

Gopher Gulch is a nice place

All in all we would not hesitate to come back again!
The good - Clean, well spaced sites, new facilities, friendly staff, well maintained, reasonable rates, convenient location, semi-rural location, pond on site has a covered dock and a paddleboat for rent.

The not as good - I rated it a 4, based on things the owners cannot control - highway noise and no shade. The noise from Hwy 66 is normally calm but rarely has a break in traffic, and some vehicle are loud. Being a new campground the trees are not yet grown to provide any shade, but they have planted many trees!

      Cherry Creek State Park Campground

Big, busy park but well cared for

Lots of separate loops with spacious sites and space between neighbors. Bathhouse/Laundry are in great shape and kept very clean. Note that showers cost $1.50 for 5 minutes and only take credit cards (but not Amex).

We only stayed one night but wished we had more time to explore all the trails. Plus there's the lake. We can see what this park is so popular.

      Riverview RV Park & Campground

      River view RV campground

This is a nice campground. They have two bath houses. One is good and the other is ok. They have a decent laundry mat. Store is good. Close to town without feeling close. Camp site are close together so buddy camping is good but if not with friends you will get to know your neighbors. I would recommend.

      Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir

      Needed A Bigger Vehicle

We could only get to campsite 6 in our manual Subaru Crosstrek. The road did not allow us to make it past with how deep the holes were in the road. Our car became unbalanced in our third attempt to get up- whole driver side was in the air. But we still found a good spot. Just wish we were able to see the other 30 sites.

      Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir

      Needs clearance and 4x4

You need decent clearance because there is huge ruts in the road. We tried to view past Camp Site 6 and almost got stuck. I would stay with the first few unless you got some good tires. Not a good road for a trailer. We didn't get a pic of Camp Site 2 because someone was in it but is very nice (fav spot). Camp Site 3-5 are a stone throw apart with Camp Site 1 being solo. Camp site 2 is within view of Camp Site 3 (bundle of trees a part)

Camp Site 6 is also solo but has very bad ruts and is down a decent hill. We had to get a running start to get past the ruts. Didn't get pics of Camp Site 6 due to someone being in it.

Decent with a truck. We had a high clearance 2 wheel drive and was able to make it to the first few camp sites. Jeeps should be fine.

Cottonwood Campground — Boyd Lake State Park

A Great Spot for a Relaxing Outdoor Getaway

I really like campgrounds that offer easy access to both water activities and basic amenities. Cottonwood Campground seems like a solid option for a relaxing weekend, especially if you enjoy boating, fishing, or simply spending time outdoors with family and friends.

      Allenspark Dispersed Camp Spot

      No access 36 side

Terrible luck. No access from the 36 side anymore. It is gated off and if you want to camp, you’re going to have to park and hail everything in.

Inlet Bay Campground — Horsetooth Reservoir

      A cute spot

Being RV campers there is something to be said about pulling up to a site and it being already level. Already off to an amazing start.

This spot was well maintained, had just enough shade, incredibly close to hiking trails, close to the water, and walking distance to the camp store, and also close to a vault toilet. All in all I have no real complaints about inlet bay campground and absolutely loved this site :)

    Guide to Keenesburg

Camping options near Keenesburg, Colorado range from state parks to private RV sites. The region sits at approximately 4,900 feet elevation on Colorado's eastern plains, with fewer trees than mountain campgrounds. Weather patterns include strong winds and summer thunderstorms that can develop quickly, requiring campers to secure equipment properly during afternoon storms that typically occur from May through August.

    What to do

Bird watching opportunities: At St. Vrain State Park Campground, visitors can observe diverse bird species including bald eagles. "There are several water bodies one even had a nest of eagles," notes Michele W., while another camper mentions, "There are a couple of bald eagles nesting in the tree in the middle of the lake that is amazing to watch!"

Fishing in stocked ponds: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing as a primary activity with stocked waters. "My friends and I love this campground! Numerous ponds, stocked ponds, trails, biking, birds, paddle boarding," reports Kate B. about her experience at St. Vrain State Park.

Paddle sports and water recreation: Several reservoirs provide water activities beyond fishing. Jackson Lake State Park Campground features a marina with a swim beach for summer visitors, though water levels can fluctuate seasonally. One reviewer observed that "the lake must be very low, looked about halfway full" during their visit.

    What campers like

Mountain views from plains camping: The eastern plains location offers distant mountain scenery without mountain access difficulties. One camper at St. Vrain noted, "The view of the mountains is to die for!" while another mentioned, "Great little walks around ponds with Mountain View's in the background."

Concrete parking pads: RV campers appreciate the level sites at Cherry Creek State Park Campground, which one reviewer described as having "clean bathrooms" and "nice level primative spots." Another camper mentioned the benefits of "level concrete" sites at St. Vrain.

Accessibility to urban amenities: The region's proximity to metropolitan areas allows for convenient access to supplies. "Close enough to Walmart for groceries, etc." mentioned one St. Vrain visitor. Another noted it was "RIGHT off I25. On the plus side you're close to food and access."

    What you should know

Highway noise impacts: Many campgrounds in the area experience road noise due to proximity to major highways. One camper at Denver East-Strasburg KOA reported, "Literally right next to highway I-70, there's no way you'll get a restful nights sleep."

Insect issues during summer: Jackson Lake campers warn about significant insect populations during warmer months. "The bugs were very horrible. While I know that it's part of camping, they were swarming so bad you heard a constant loud buzzing," one camper detailed.

Reservation requirements: Most established campgrounds require advance bookings, especially during peak season. One frustrated visitor noted, "January of 2019 the park, like many in the state moved to a reservation only system" at Boyd Lake State Park, adding that they couldn't book on-site even when spaces were available.

Cost considerations: State park camping fees add up when including required day passes. A visitor to Jackson Lake reported, "For the price, I would say it is a little expensive for how it looked this time of year."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Cottonwood Campground at Boyd Lake State Park offers family-friendly amenities including playgrounds. "Great facilities (including the dump station), close enough to town for a quick adventures and a nice playground for the kids," noted one visitor.

Educational ranger programs: Some state parks offer weekend activities for children. Jackson Lake was described by one camper as having an "amphitheater [that] always has fun family type activities which is cool."

Swimming areas for children: Multiple campgrounds feature designated swimming areas during summer. One Jackson Lake visitor mentioned the "swim beach is lots of fun too," making it "great for taking kids."

    Tips from RVers

Extension cords and hoses: Bring extra-length hookup equipment to campgrounds like Denver East-Strasburg KOA. One RVer noted, "Connections are a little far for some RV models, so make sure you have extensions for cords and hoses just in case."

Electrical concerns: Verify power stability before setting up. One Chatfield State Park Campground visitor recommended that "without a reservation you put your name on a list that they start going through at 1pm to assign sites... be wary if you need certain hookups."

Laundry facilities: Multiple campgrounds offer coin-operated laundry services. Chatfield features "coin-laundry available" with "laundry room[s]" in each loop, according to camper feedback.
