Horse Farm at the Base of the Rockies is one of the few equestrian-specific camping options near Keenesburg, Colorado. This establishment provides drinking water for horses, allows campfires, and offers picnic tables at campsites. The property accommodates both tent and RV camping with drive-in access. Trash collection is available on site, which helps maintain the cleanliness of the horse areas. While the campground does not feature dedicated horse corrals according to the data, it does offer suitable accommodations for those traveling with horses. Firewood is provided on-site, eliminating the need for campers to bring their own. The campground requires reservations in advance to secure a spot with your horses.

Pets are permitted at the campground, allowing visitors to bring dogs along with their horses. The combination of mountain proximity and designated camping areas creates a practical option for horse enthusiasts looking for overnight accommodations with their animals. Trail access information is limited in the available data, but the property's location provides reasonable access to various riding trails in the region. Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir

      Good spot!

Site 5 was a great spot for a bigger group. It was nice to be tucked away in the corner with no groups behind us or next to us. There were other campers near by but it felt pretty private. The weather was great. We didn’t make it to the gross reservoir but it was nice to have the option of a good hike near by. It is very important that you have a high clearance car to drive on the road. It’s a lot like off roading on some parts. I would go back!

Indian Paintbrush Campground—Bear Creek Lake Park

      Best of City Camping

Close proximity to the highway. Clean level spots. Geared more towards RV camping. Pros: great views of the foothills. Lots of park amenities like horse stables, archery range, swim beach, boat rentals, hiking trails, picnic areas. Con: Orange glow of Home Depot sign at night and no shade during the day. Your camping reservation (strongly recommended) includes park admission.

      Beautiful Park in the City!

Although it was a quick overnight trip for us, don’t let that be you! It’s we’ll thought out with lots of activity areas like, mountain bike trail, shooting area, off leash dog area, model airfield, equestrian trails, lake and hiking trails! It’s a 4200 acre park with 850 acre reservoir. It’s a destination, really!

      Chatfield State Park Campground

      Busy park, lots to do

Stay here a couple times a year, great amenities and lots to do with a swim beach, shore line, horses, boat ramp and model planes. Model plane field is close to the campground, can hear it early in the morning. D loop is quietest, C loop is electric only so you have to wait in the dump line, and I've found A & B loops to generally be the rowdiest. Recent construction has started of a big housing development right up against the park so get there before you're surrounded by houses!

      Chatfield State Park Campground

A great balance between nature and access to amenities

Chatfield State Park is a great mixture of access to the outdoors with availability of many of the benefits of a metro area close by. We arrived a day earlier than what we had reserved and had site 10 for our first night. We stayed on site 59 for the remainder of our time at Chatfield. Both sites offered a level, concrete camping pad with full hookups. There is also a picnic table, fire ring, and a gravel tent pad set back about 10 yards behind the site. There is plentiful access to a number of different walking trails, many of which are paved.

A few things to be aware of if you haven’t been here before:

      1. As others have pointed out, the WiFi is broadcast from the center of each camping loop, is slower than dial up, and has a very short range. I would not count on using this for anything more than light web browsing. We used our personal hotspots and had 4 bars of 5Ge on AT&T.
      2. The trash dumpsters are also at the center of each loop. This is the only location on each loop to dispose of trash and can be a decent walk if your site is on the outside of the loop. They were overflowing with trash for several days during our stay.
      3. There are two washers ($1.75/load) and two dryers ($1.50/load) available at each shower facility at the center of the loop. Consider doing your laundry early in the morning, as campers during our stay had a bad habit of leaving their wash in the machines for several hours after their cycle completed, leaving them unavailable for others to use.

Indian Paintbrush Campground—Bear Creek Lake Park

The perfect spot to camp to enjoy Red Rocks

This was our first time staying at Bear Creek Lake. The park is not part of the Colorado Wilds or CPW State Park system, but daily vehicle fees are included with your camping reservation. Our towed vehicle was included when we checked in at the ranger station.

The campground is at the back of the park, roughly 2 miles from the entrance. There is a lot of bike traffic and windy roads. Sites are mostly level, electric only, and relatively close together. We stayed in Site 41 which was walking distance to the pit toilets and water spigot. We had no trouble fitting our 29' Class C, tow dolly, and towed vehicle.

We filled our 7 gallon water jugs at the spigot to top off our fresh water tank. The spigot is the terrible skinny faucet that is not threaded as to dissuade RVers from connecting a fill hose to it. If you want to fill water jugs like we did, bring a short (<6') hose and a water bandit so that you don't waste water.

Pit toilets and flush bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The bath house at the center of the campground features coin operated hot showers, $2 for 10 minutes. The water temperature was very hot, but manageable. A great convenience since there are no sewer hookups at the sites.

This is a great place to camp if you want to explore Morrison, Golden, or catch a show at Red Rocks. The main park entrance closes at 9:30 and a back gate accessible from I-470 opens that allows access to the campground. We had no trouble getting an Uber to pick us up to go to Red Rocks, but had several driver cancellations trying to get back after a concert.

Deer Creek Campground — Golden Gate Canyon

      Early Camping in the snow!

We love to visit Golden Gate Canyon State Park early in the season because it is very busy all summer.  This is our second stay at the park in March, and we have had wonderful snow both times.

The Reverends Ridge campground has limited sites available this time of year but is still well maintained.  The campground office restrooms were open, heated and clean.  Trash dumpsters were available as were recycling cans. The electric hookups were on. There is no water available except in the restrooms.

The campsite (C-35) parking area was plowed open to exactly the width of our trailer, so with more than three feet of snow on the ground we needed to get some exercise and do a bit of shoveling so we could back in and be able to walk along side the trailer and open the door! .More snow was falling as we set up but the scenery was absolutely magical.  About 25 yards of more shovel work made it so we could find and dig out both the table and fire pit provided.  We had a warming fire going in no time.

Golden Gate is a wildlife paradise and as we worked we could hear Turkeys calling form the trees.  We were also graced with the presence of four huge Moose who had taken up residency and were lounging in the snow.  In the distance we could hear the yips and howls of coyotes.

Snow graced us for the first of our Friday to Sunday stay, but warmer temperatures  arrived Saturday afternoon and the great daytime thaw and evening freeze common to Colorado mountains in springtime began in earnest.  This made for some cautious walking around the snow piled nearly everywhere.

One of the great things about this park is the winter activities available on the many trails, and the added benefit of Nederland, Black Hawk, and Central City Colorado being within easy driving distance for some small town amenities if desired.  This is a great park, and my wife is wishing to visit when there is no snow!   😎

      Chatfield State Park Campground

      Great for exploring Denver

This is the first time I’ve found a state park so close to a major metro area!!

Because of its proximity to Denver, Chatfield fills up quickly, so book well in advance. When I stayed in mid September, there was a zero percent chance of a walk in getting a space.

I stayed in Loop B, site 126. This is on what I’d call the “park side” side of the loop. If you’d like views of the lake or mountains, I’d suggest sites like 111 or 112. But this site was the cleanest I’ve ever camped at. The gravel was freshly raked, both around the picnic table and on the tent pad. Some very curious bunnies made their appearance each morning!

The bathroom was very clean, but there was no soap provided for hand washing, nor are there any trash cans within the actual bathroom, which I found incredibly odd. There is also a laundry area just outside the bathroom (which was a god send because I really needed to do a laundry!) and there was a trash can out there. The showers are coin operated and the water comes out almost directly onto the wall; there is no way to adjust the shower head.

There is a trail around the entire reservoir, which is great for a bike or a run, although many die hard road cyclists choose to use the actual street that runs around the park. And, of course, water activities abound.

The two entrances to the park make getting in and out very easy!

    Guide to Keenesburg

Horse Farm at the Base of the Rockies provides a unique experience for equestrians camping near Keenesburg, Colorado. Located about 38 miles northwest of Keenesburg, this destination sits at the transition zone between Colorado's eastern plains and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Summer temperatures typically range from 55-90°F, with cooler nights even during peak season.

    What to do

Trail riding opportunities: The region surrounding Keenesburg offers multiple options for horseback riding enthusiasts. At Chatfield State Park Campground, campers can access "lots of space for biking and all kinds of water sports" according to Rick, who appreciated the park's layout.

Water recreation: While not directly in Keenesburg, nearby reservoirs provide cooling options during summer months. Cherry Creek State Park Campground features "a nice swim beach with brand new building. Many covered picnic sites," as Kay S. notes, though she warns visitors must "arrive at the break of day to secure one."

Archery and specialized activities: Several parks in the region offer unique recreation beyond standard camping. At Indian Paintbrush Campground, Joshua H. appreciated "the hiking and biking trails. Beautiful lake for swimming and paddle sports. Will definitely be returning for the archery and horseback riding."

    What campers like

Mountain views close to urban areas: Campers appreciate being able to access mountain scenery without long drives. Jennifer L. notes that Indian Paintbrush Campground offers "great views of the foothills" while still providing "lots of park amenities like horse stables, archery range, swim beach, boat rentals, hiking trails, picnic areas."

Space between sites: Many campers value privacy and adequate spacing. At Chatfield State Park, Rick observed that "sites are spread out giving plenty of room between sites," a feature that makes this park a preferred option for those visiting the Denver area.

Wildlife viewing: The area provides opportunities to spot various animal species. Cassandra T. stayed at Chatfield State Park and reported, "The wild life was beautiful, the facilities were clean, and the staff was friendly and helpful!" Her June visit yielded a peaceful stay even when weekend campers arrived.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most established campgrounds in the region require advance booking. Cherry Creek State Park fills quickly, with Kay S. noting "Campground is usually fully booked all season. Reservations can be made six months out. Two week limit."

Access challenges: Some dispersed camping areas require appropriate vehicles. At Winiger Ridge at Gross Reservoir, Graham S. warns about "a gnarly hill with deep ruts" and advises against bringing "a camper/RV, or anything that doesn't have high clearance and power."

Fire restrictions: Rules vary by location and season. While Horse Farm at the Base of the Rockies allows campfires and provides firewood, other sites may have seasonal restrictions based on fire danger levels.

Park entry fees: Many state parks charge daily entrance fees in addition to camping costs. At Cherry Creek, Stephanie S. mentions "an $11 day pass fee not included in your camping stay," which visitors should budget for when planning their trip.

    Tips for camping with families

Look for kid-friendly amenities: Some campgrounds offer facilities specifically designed for children. At Deer Creek Campground, Pam B. appreciated that "they had a nice little store and playground," which enhanced their family camping experience despite the somewhat cramped sites.

Consider noise levels: Family-oriented campgrounds may have more activity and noise. Jennifer S. observed that Deer Creek Campground is "such a beautiful place. trails are amazing. although the sound of screaming children that pervades the campsite kind of ruins the experience," suggesting families and those seeking quiet may have different preferences.

Plan for weather variables: The foothills area can experience significant temperature changes. When camping with children, prepare for cooler evenings even in summer months, as temperatures can drop considerably after sunset.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: RVers should research utility connections before arrival. Stephanie S. noted that Cherry Creek offers "full hookups. The sights were concrete and level," providing a comfortable base for visiting family in the area.

Site spacing concerns: Some RV areas place units close together. Meg G. shared that at Cherry Creek, "I didn't love the campground feel ... I felt like I was very close to other campers," suggesting those seeking more privacy might prefer dispersed options.

Access roads: Some horse campgrounds near Keenesburg have challenging approach roads. At Farewell Gulch, ashley L. reports "we only made it just past the coordinates and parked on top of that hill. Thought we could get in farther but a quick walk showed us that it's little too washed out and steep for our pickup camper."
