Best Cabin Camping near Denver, CO

Several cabin rentals near Denver provide convenient access to outdoor recreation while offering more comfort than tent camping. Golden Gate Canyon State Park features cabin accommodations at both Reverend's Ridge and Frazer Meadow campgrounds, with electric hookups and basic furnishings. KOA properties in Central City and Strasburg offer cabin rentals with varying levels of amenities. "The sites are really big and the person who took our reservations was so kind," notes one visitor about their experience at Standley Lake Regional Park, which also offers cabin options. Most locations provide beds, tables, and electricity, though bathroom facilities vary from shared campground restrooms to private indoor facilities depending on the specific cabin.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Denver East-Strasburg KOA and Denver West-Central City KOA feature the standardized cabin designs typical of KOA properties, with options ranging from basic sleeping cabins to deluxe units with kitchenettes. Jellystone Park at Larkspur provides family-oriented cabin rentals with additional amenities. Reservations are essential during summer months when cabin availability becomes limited. According to a camper at Denver West-Central City KOA, "It was a great spot for families that is quiet and very clean. Quick and easy camping experience." Pet policies vary by property, with some locations allowing dogs for an additional fee while others prohibit pets entirely.

Most cabins include basic furnishings but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen facilities range from none in basic cabins to partial kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves in more deluxe units. Several properties offer on-site camp stores where guests can purchase firewood, ice, and basic provisions. Propane grills or fire rings are common at cabin sites, though fire restrictions may apply during dry periods. Visitors staying at cabins near Bear Creek Lake Park or Standley Lake have access to nearby grocery stores in Littleton, Westminster or Golden for additional supplies.

Castle Mountain Recreation Area at Wellington Lake

    Private but Crowded

Beautiful lakeside camping just outside of Denver. Campsites are a bit close together, but great for groups! No hookups here but you have bathroom facilities and a visitor center where you can buy firewood. Campfires allowed in the fire pits. If you have an RV beware quiet hours from 10pm to 8am, no generators allowed. Lake is perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing and you will most likely have phone service if you are with AT&T or Verizon. Many day use areas, however vehicles and individuals are charged. For campers, if you bring more than one vehicle you will be charged daily for any additional ones. No drinking water is available, you must bring your own. Dirt roads to the lake are rough and narrow. Close to Deckers for incidentals. Intersects with the Colorado trail for hiking and biking and close to the Colorado River for tubing!

South Shore Campground at Carter Lake

    Nice Spot

I stayed in spot S18 for 2 nights. Large gravel pull through spot (as were all of the sites on this loop), with a picnic table and fire pit. Some trees around this site providing shade on both sides, but this was not true of my friend’s site as S20. Also enough foliage between sites to give a feeling of privacy. Nice view of the lake and boat ramp. Electric hookups at site, water and vault toilets available.

Deer Creek Campground — Golden Gate Canyon

    Tons of camping options

The views, wildlife, and geology in the park are astounding---add to that the yellow aspens in the fall and you have classic Colorado camping not far from Denver. There are a lot of different options: typical state park camp sites, cabins, and a yurt, as well as backpacking/backcountry sites. We did the yurt in the winter and it was amazing, but make sure you have a jeep (or similar) and bring everything you need.

Reverend's Ridge Campground — Golden Gate Canyon

    Perfect Quick Escape

Trees, trails and tranquility just an hour from Denver? Yes please! This is one of my new favorite spots -perfect for a quick weekend escape. We loved the roomy pull through spots for our camper, easy electrical hookups, super clean bathrooms and shower house. So many other campgrounds in Colorado have been hit hard by the pine beetle epidemic, but Reverends Ridge still has towering trees that make the loops feel private and remote. Dont mIss the easy hike to Panorama Point. From there you can let link to the rest of the extensive trail system through the park.

Castle Mountain Recreation Area at Wellington Lake

    Good Campground for Social Distancing

Currently they don't have day-use open, so there's plenty of space at the lake to set-up and spend the day playing with the kids. We stayed in a mountain site (not lake-front) and the kids loved climbing the rocks and exploring the mountain. Really friendly staff. Quiet hours are not well kept and that would be my only complaint. No motors allowed on lake. Great for paddleboarding (rentals available), kayaking, canoeing & kid's floats.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Mountain High

Yes Mountain High!! 8100’ high. 7 miles off I-70 at Idaho Springs. 25 miles into outskirts of Denver. Don’t worry they have oxygen! Not kidding!!

Nice campground, friend staff, laundry, fun little gift shop with some food stuffs, beer and liquor. Pizza cooked there but we didn’t try it.

Our space was a big rig space on concrete pad with ample seating, a table, a fire pit, and a propane grill stove… use you own propane! Full hook ups. It was still reaching freezing at night and so we didn’t hook up our water.

    Red Daisy Farm

Quiet Spot Away from the City Filled with Peace and Quiet

I was looking for a quiet place to get away from Denver but I wasn't able to take off on a long drive to get there, then I found this place. A flower farm, with rows of beautiful blooming flowers, a natural pool, a Jacuzzi, and a beautiful view of the Rocky Mtns? Sounds perfect for a midweek getaway to me!

When I pulled up, Terry came out to meet me and give me a tour. He took me to the tent spot and I quickly realized that they didn't get many tent campers, they mostly received RV and AirB&B guests. The tent site was big enough to fit a couple tents (or a large family tent) but there wasn't a bathroom or even many places you could nature pee around the area. Terry informed me that they don't have bathrooms yet, but they are in the process of turning the old silo's into bathrooms and potentially another bedroom to rent out. That should be done by the end of the Summer.

Then he gave me a tour of the pool and the flower shop. The land here is just incredible! They only bought this property 9 years ago and only started growing flowers on it 6 years ago and it has obviously transformed into a stunning landscape. The flower storage was filled with stunning colors and smells of all the assorted flowers they grow on the farm. Meg came out later to say hi and tell me a little about the events they host on the property.

The natural pool was beautiful! I was the only camper there so I had free reign of the place. I lounged for a bit on a float in the water until I had a friendly visitor in the water with me, A small king snake (the good kind of snake) was cooling down in the water and when we saw each other we both ran the other way. See my video of an alternative use for the morsel spork...:-) I didn't see him again the rest of the time out there. Terry laughed at my tomfoolery and said they normally don't come near in the water, but he likes knowing they are out there since they eat rattlesnakes.

As the sun went down I took my book into the hot tub and relaxed for a bit. While Terry and Meg's kids rode around on the golf cart and jumped on the trampoline on the other side of the property, it was very soothing to hear the quiet laughter and fun being had by a beautiful family and yet still feel like I had my privacy.

All in all it was a beautiful stay at a lovely location. I would recommend this place for a girl's day trip, bridal shower, or bachelorette location too! It is screaming to be filled with sundresses and mimosas. RV camping or even staying at the AirB&B would probably be ideal for your stay until they get the bathrooms built.

I requested that Meg send me information in regards to events at the site and she sent me the following:

Red Daisy Farm Event Space: We have a beautiful 4 acre property for you to host your special event at. Reverend's Ridge Campground — Golden Gate Canyon

    Choose your loop carefully

We were going to give this a 3 star review based on our first night here in D loop. No water, sites close together and a long walk to the vault toilets, plus the site was not level. Our second night was in E loop. Sites are over 100 feet apart, level, flush heads, near free showers, and water available plus dish washing area, but no tent pads. Loops are either RV or tent. Tent loops also have sites too close for our taste, about 37 feet apart. Though if you choose carefully, a few sites are more remote. Some of the tent loops let you park adjacent to your site (loops H and I). Others you park in a common area and walk to your site. Volunteer staff very friendly. In season camp programs. Much jet noise from airliners leaving Denver. Some road noise also, but very quiet at night. Your experience will vary with your chosen loop and site. Overall nice, much more so in E loop and B loop looks similar. For tenting, I’d suggest H or I loop. Good T-Mobile.

    Denver West-Central City KOA

    Nicest KOA we've been to

And in fact I believe they were KOA of the year 2023 or 2024. More expensive than we're used to, but has nice amenities. Sites level with concrete pads, fairly large. Some space between with trees. Nice metal patio furniture provided at each site(chairs, table, fire pit). Has decent showers, hot tubs, and off leash dog park. Inexpensive pancake breakfast and pizza/wings to your site are available, also an onsite store. Kind of at the top of a rise, so good views but also kind of chilly for July (60s/40s). Massive thunderstorms with hail and heavy rain two evengings (CO mountains tend to get afternoon t-storms). Communicate via text to let you know about goings on. Good radio station out of Idaho Springs KYGT 102.7 and 103.9

Guide to Denver

Cabin accommodations near Denver provide year-round options for outdoor activities, ranging from 7,500 to 9,000 feet in elevation. Most cabin locations offer access to hiking trails, fishing spots, and mountain views within a 30-60 minute drive from the city center. Golden Gate Canyon State Park features both Frazer Meadow and Reverend's Ridge campgrounds at higher elevations where temperatures can be 10-15 degrees cooler than Denver.

What to do

Explore hiking trails: At Golden Gate Canyon State Park, numerous trail options surround the cabin areas. "This park has great trails for hiking and mountain biking. There is also a high elevation lake as well as fantastic views of the continental divide," notes Mike M. in his review.

Fishing opportunities: Several cabin locations provide pond or lake access. Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon is located near fishing spots. According to a visitor, "This campground was tiny and a little cramped but was very clean and had running showers that was a plus. It was surrounded by trees but they were small which didn't help block the wind."

Wildlife viewing: Standley Lake Regional Park offers bird watching near cabin accommodations. "I don't know how you could not like a place with a huge lake that bald eagles nest beside. With a rookery, this is the spot for bird enthusiasts!" explains Blair S.

What campers like

Quiet environment: Reverend's Ridge Campground receives praise for its peaceful cabin settings. "Loop E (electric hookups) is very spacious and well laid out. Every campsite is a pull thru allowing you situate anywhere along the paved area to best suit your needs. Mostly level, fire rings, and very large metal picnic tables," writes Dennis G.

Mountain views: Cabins at higher elevations offer scenic vistas. A visitor to Frazer Meadow Campground shares, "This was a great campground tucked away in the mountains. There are plenty of hiking trails from the campground and throughout the park. The sites were very private and very quiet."

Water activities: Many campers appreciate the lake access at Bear Creek Lake Park. "Loved the hiking and biking trails. Beautiful lake for swimming and paddle sports. Will definitely be returning for the archery and horseback riding," mentions Joshua H.

What you should know

Elevation considerations: Most cabin locations sit at higher elevations than Denver. At Base Camp, a camper notes, "This campground is great in that the hookups work, the sites were level and the access to Golden Gate Canyon State Park was amazing. However, the campground is right on a busy road into the State Park so road noise is almost constant."

Weather variability: Mountain cabins experience rapid weather changes. Pack layers even in summer months.

Reservation timing: Most cabins require advance booking, especially during peak seasons. For Denver East-Strasburg KOA, a visitor shares, "We stayed one night to wait out weather in the mountains west. Staff are friendly. Golf cart escorts to your site. Sites are flat but a bit cramped. The laundry, bathroom and showers were clean with nice hot water."
