Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Hasty, CO

Lake Hasty Campground at John Martin Reservoir State Park accommodates pets throughout its spacious, well-maintained sites. Dogs must remain leashed in all areas of the campground, with multiple pet waste stations available throughout the property. The campground features both RV and tent sites that welcome pets, with some campsites positioned directly on the shoreline of Lake Hasty. Visitors note the campground remains uncrowded during weekdays, providing ample space for dogs to enjoy the outdoors without crowding other campers. Point Campground, also within John Martin Reservoir State Park, similarly allows pets but offers a more open setting with fewer trees and greater distance between sites. Sundance High Plains RV Park & Cabins provides another pet-friendly option with full hookups and designated pet exercise areas on grassy terrain.

Campers should be aware of wildlife encounters when camping with pets—reviews mention sightings of skunks, rattlesnakes, and various bird species throughout the park. During summer months, the lack of shade at Point Campground can create uncomfortable conditions for pets, while Lake Hasty Campground's cottonwood trees provide essential shade. The small swimming beach at Lake Hasty provides water access, though pets must remain leashed near the water. Sportsman's RV Park & Horse Motel offers another family-friendly environment that welcomes pets without hesitation, making it suitable for travelers passing through the area who need accommodations for their animals.

Sundance High Plains RV Park & Cabins

Cozy atmosphere; great knowledgeable engaging staff!

Fair Pricing! A perfect one night stay for campers who need a place to stay and won’t be using the extras as they do not use a dump station or electric. If your on the road, out of state (quasi-retired aft. 65) trying to see YOUR country and not having deep pockets. Colorado not only charges you a fee to drive into their state Parks but also charge site fees for a camping site. (They should make allowances regarding out of staters & 1 night stays.) This Park was great and does that. It is level, pet friendly for ppl who travel with a pet. (We do not) Plenty hot water in the shower. Happy to have discovered them via local C’ty Rec Ctr. ALSO, really enjoyed friendly knowledgeable staff!

Point Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Point Campground

We stayed here 4th of July weekend. The lake hasty spots were all booked up but there was some on the point available last minute. These spots have some of the best views for the sunset. Some things to consider. No water so bring your own or you’ll have to go fill up at the lake hasty one. Bathrooms were available for few so you have to walk or drive up to them. Clean spots but no shade and very windy/buggy. The breeze at night kept us cool and didn’t get very hot until after 10am. people were walking down to the water to fish from the camp spots. We were able to drive our car into the wildlife area where you could park very close to the water and post up all day. I think you can also disperse camp like that but read the rules. We also drove across the dam and found some awesome sandy spots on the water. Dispersed camping was also available there. We posted up all day and had a blast playing in the water with our dog. Hardly anyone around. We went and got more ice on our second day at the bait shop right outside the park down the school road.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Great relaxing campground

The campground was uncrowded when we stayed. It was quiet. The small Lake Hasty was a great spot for a short canoe trip. Most people waved at others in the campground but with Covid there was less interaction with others than in the past. It is possible to take a walk around Lake Hasty. The restrooms were spotless. There was good cell service.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Stop over

Stayed in September 2022, stopped in on the way home to KS. Unfortunately lake down to 4% at present so don’t plan on fishing swimming. They are going to be working on the dam. Campsite level & nice on Hasty lake side of Dam. Shower are pay. Probably a nice place when the lake is full.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Sleeping by the Dam

It's hard to give this place the credit it deserves when you come off of a mountain over 10,000 feet!!! Sites 1-20 something are up next to the dam and levee. Site 9 is the farthest from the road that separates this section from the bigger portion of the campground. There is only electricity at these sites with community water. There are restrooms (that we didn't use) and garbage containers scattered throughout. This park's saving grace is the lake and the abundant wildlife... mostly birds, but beaver and skunks were seen! Roads are paved, sites are rock with little cabana-type shelters, a picnic table and fire ring. Sites 1-20 something have scattered small trees... site 9 probably had the largest... a young cottonwood. The largest section of Hasty campsites are well treed, some at water's edge. If you're going to stay longer than 1 night, especially during the summer, try to reserve in the big section with trees! It's a popular, year-round park with fishing on Hasty Lake and boating on the reservoir side!

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

Make sure you check your camp site on a map!

Initially made reservations at the point campground. There is NO shade. Cancelled and remade for Lake Hasty campground. Had a good time. Visited in spring, but it was HOT!! Very glad to have had the shade. Lots of owls. Lots of birds to watch. Bathrooms were a bit of a walk, but we were right next to the playground. Did some fishing, had a muskrat steal our fish. Lots of rattlesnakes. Also learned that rattlesnakes can swim. Easy drive to Bent's Old Fort which was great. Overall, nice but factor in weather when making reservations.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

Popular state park in SE Colorado

John Martin Reservoir is huge and is a big draw for fishermen and boaters. There is some camping above the dam which is very basic and the main campground is located on Hasty Lake in a stand of Cottonwood trees. As you enter the Hasty location there is a dump station ahead on the left just after the turn into the campground. The first camping sites are on the right and shade is limited to metal pergolas. Continuing into the park you pass the bathroom with laundry and showers and take any of several loops to access your campsite. These are mainly under a dense cottonwood canopy. There are a few sites right on the shoreline of Hasty lake, which are quite popular and have great views across the small lake.

There is cellphone service, I don't recall if there is wood for sale, but campers did have fires. Sites have fire rings picnic tables. If you drive out of the park past the dump station and follow the road you arrive at a swimming beach and kayak launch area. The area is home to many birds including hawks, herons, and pelicans.
