A smooth dirt road leads to a small turnaround alongside the Arkansas River in Melon Valley State Wildlife Area, managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife outside Swink. This is dispersed camping in the most literal sense: no designated sites, no level ground to speak of, and no fires allowed. What you get is direct river access and a place to park for the night.
The site works best for smaller vehicles. Multiple reviewers note the ground is uneven enough to make sleeping difficult in anything but a truck or van, and one flags a sharp approach from the east that rules out large rigs. Cell service is reliable on Verizon. Shell casings and occasional trash left by previous visitors are part of the reality here, though at least one camper made a point of packing out a bag of litter. Road noise from the nearby interstate is a factor some nights, while others report it fading by the time they turned in.
"Place was quiet, besides animals," notes TRISTAN B., who also spotted what looked like bear tracks. Wildlife activity along the river corridor is a reasonable expectation. Campers who have parked parallel to the water report the position helps with leveling and puts them close enough to hear the river. For those passing through the region, Rocky Ford Campsite provides a nearby alternative with a different setup. Melon Valley suits the overnight traveler who needs a place to stop, not a base camp.
