Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Eads, CO

Neenoshe Reservoir provides free dispersed camping accommodations for pet owners near Eads with designated parking areas in grassy patches that include bushes for minimal shade. Campers with pets have access to basic composting toilets but should note there is no drinking water available on site. The reservoir area permits both tent and RV camping with established fire rings where fires are allowed. Visitors frequently observe abundant bird activity throughout the day with many species creating a natural soundtrack for camping experiences. Lake Hasty Campground at John Martin Reservoir State Park offers more developed pet-friendly options with electric hookups, picnic tables, and showers, though pet owners should prepare for the coin-operated shower facilities.

Walking paths around Lake Hasty provide exercise opportunities for dogs, with many campsites positioned under mature cottonwood trees offering essential shade during hot summer months. The campground features lakeside sites that are particularly popular for campers with dogs who enjoy water access, though rattlesnakes are common in the area and have been observed swimming in the water. Most sites at Lake Hasty are well-spaced and level with approximately 80% having substantial shade trees. The Sportsman's RV Park & Horse Motel in Lamar offers another pet-friendly alternative with full hookups in a family-friendly environment about 30 minutes from Eads. Campers report high winds are common at Neenoshe Reservoir, making tent camping challenging at times, while the more protected sites at John Martin Reservoir provide better shelter for overnight stays with pets.

Sundance High Plains RV Park & Cabins

Cozy atmosphere; great knowledgeable engaging staff!

Fair Pricing! A perfect one night stay for campers who need a place to stay and won’t be using the extras as they do not use a dump station or electric. If your on the road, out of state (quasi-retired aft. 65) trying to see YOUR country and not having deep pockets. Colorado not only charges you a fee to drive into their state Parks but also charge site fees for a camping site. (They should make allowances regarding out of staters & 1 night stays.) This Park was great and does that. It is level, pet friendly for ppl who travel with a pet. (We do not) Plenty hot water in the shower. Happy to have discovered them via local C’ty Rec Ctr. ALSO, really enjoyed friendly knowledgeable staff!

Point Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Point Campground

We stayed here 4th of July weekend. The lake hasty spots were all booked up but there was some on the point available last minute. These spots have some of the best views for the sunset. Some things to consider. No water so bring your own or you’ll have to go fill up at the lake hasty one. Bathrooms were available for few so you have to walk or drive up to them. Clean spots but no shade and very windy/buggy. The breeze at night kept us cool and didn’t get very hot until after 10am. people were walking down to the water to fish from the camp spots. We were able to drive our car into the wildlife area where you could park very close to the water and post up all day. I think you can also disperse camp like that but read the rules. We also drove across the dam and found some awesome sandy spots on the water. Dispersed camping was also available there. We posted up all day and had a blast playing in the water with our dog. Hardly anyone around. We went and got more ice on our second day at the bait shop right outside the park down the school road.

Point Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Overpriced for what’s there

$20 for campsite plus $9 fee if you don’t hold a Colorado State Park pass, total $29 for no electric or water and pit toilets not near campsites. No shade at the “Pointe”. It’s a dam on the Arkansas River set in the prairie. Buggy. No easy access to the water near campground. Smell of cattle feed lots on the breeze.

Point Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

Reserve ahead of time - camp reservation system unrealible using phone

This is more of a review on the Colorado's reservation system than the campground it self.  This is a by reservation only campground, which I did not know about before arriving as I was traveling and this was not my intended stopping point for the night.  As it turned out I was unable to camp here.  Arrived at 7pm after hours and they only way to make a day of reservation was to use their online system which started out fine.  Made a account with Colorado, then made one for the reservation system got to the final step and then it would not let me agree to the terms of service, tried numerous times with out luck.  They have two ways to pay for your entrance to the park, by paper or electronic means at a kiosk, but only through their reservation system for a campsite.  Would be nice if the kiosk would let you reserve a site.  So if you are traveling and need a campsite get here early while park staff are still on duty or you might be out of luck.

Point Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Not exactly what I expected

Very large open gravel and prairie area. Long drive from there entrance to sites on gravel roads. Sites near water are still about 100-200 yards from the water. Lots of wind, no trees. The basic sites have a table, grill, parking pad, and tent pad, all on gravel. The area is very large so getting to the bathroom is a hike. Requires reservation plus a park pass you can buy at an automated kiosk. Access to site is via the visitor center boat inspection area which has the self serve kiosk. Overall the site is fine, and when I went on a weekday in July there was only one other camper in the whole area - right next to me. The water is pretty but that's probably where others will camp just FYI.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

    Clean and Well Maintained Campground

Spent the night in early March 2023 on our way back to Colorado from picking up our new Casita travel trailer in Texas. Only four sites were occupied on the evening that we stayed there. The trees were leafless and the grass was that lovely winter brown color, but we loved the solitude and peacefulness of a nearly empty campground.

Safe & Secure under tornado warning

Right after we set up, a huge storm went through. Never lost power and all was fine. Staff was friendly. A weird set up here, but it works well!! Facility is all gravel. Plenty of room to maneuver. Nice grass area for dogs.

Lake Hasty Campground — John Martin Reservoir State Park

Make sure you check your camp site on a map!

Initially made reservations at the point campground. There is NO shade. Cancelled and remade for Lake Hasty campground. Had a good time. Visited in spring, but it was HOT!! Very glad to have had the shade. Lots of owls. Lots of birds to watch. Bathrooms were a bit of a walk, but we were right next to the playground. Did some fishing, had a muskrat steal our fish. Lots of rattlesnakes. Also learned that rattlesnakes can swim. Easy drive to Bent's Old Fort which was great. Overall, nice but factor in weather when making reservations.

Guide to Eads

Eads sits at 4,213 feet elevation in eastern Colorado's high plains environment, characterized by wide-open grasslands and limited tree coverage. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically between day and night, particularly in summer when daytime highs often exceed 95°F before cooling significantly after sunset. Wind conditions create unique challenges for overnight camping in this area.

What to do

Birdwatching opportunities: Neenoshe Reservoir provides excellent wildlife viewing with minimal crowds. "I only saw one other vehicle at the location and that person was taking night sky photos. Lots of birds to listen to and watch," notes Glen F.

Night sky photography: The remote location and minimal light pollution create ideal conditions for stargazing and astrophotography. "When the sun went down the stargazing was incredible! saw at least 40 satellites and several shooting stars," reports Stephanie S. from Lake Hasty Campground.

Fishing access: Multiple reservoir locations provide fishing opportunities with varying water levels. "We were able to drive our car into the wildlife area where you could park very close to the water and post up all day," shares Diana H. at Point Campground.

What campers like

Uncrowded camping experience: The remote nature of camping near Eads means fewer people and more privacy. "This lake bed is nearly dry so the camping was super empty. I loved how remote and empty it was," writes Kimberly E. about Neenoshe Reservoir.

Mature shade trees: At certain campgrounds, established trees provide crucial relief from summer heat. "The main campground is located on Hasty Lake in a stand of Cottonwood trees... These are mainly under a dense cottonwood canopy," explains Judy B. at Lake Hasty Campground.

Diverse wildlife encounters: Beyond birds, campers report interesting wildlife sightings. "Saw a calm gray rat snake looking for food and had nests of baby birds in the trees overhead," mentions Stephanie S. about her stay at Lake Hasty.

What you should know

Weather challenges: High winds frequently affect camping experiences in the area. "While sun was setting the winds picked up enormously (over 18mph) and whipping tent around it was too windy to tent camp so left around sunset," reports Camper R. about Point Campground.

Wildlife safety concerns: Venomous snakes are present in the area. "Lots of rattlesnakes. Also learned that rattlesnakes can swim," warns Lisa K. from Lake Hasty Campground.

Dry conditions: Water availability varies significantly by location. "No water so bring your own or you'll have to go fill up at the lake hasty one," advises Diana H. about Point Campground.

Hidden fees: State park camping includes additional costs beyond site fees. "I made a reservation online totaling $30.71, to arrive and having to pay an additional $10 for a Colorado State Park Daily Pass," reports Meghan B. at Lake Hasty.

Tips for camping with families

Temperature management: Summer heat requires planning for comfort. "The breeze at night kept us cool and didn't get very hot until after 10am," shares Diana H. about her family's experience at Point Campground.

Activity planning: Several areas offer kid-friendly facilities. "We were right next to the playground. Did some fishing, had a muskrat steal our fish," mentions Lisa K. from Lake Hasty Campground.

Alternative accommodations: For pet friendly camping near Eads, Colorado when weather challenges tent camping, consider cabin options. "For a few bucks more than camping, we opted for a nice room with queen beds and a hot shower. Delightful change after 11 days camping," suggests Alan K. from Sundance High Plains RV Park.

Tips from RVers

Strategic parking considerations: RV campers should plan carefully for hookup access. "Tip — park further away from hookups than you think you should," advises Georg U. at Sundance High Plains RV Park.

Alternative options: When traveling through the Eads area with pets, full-service RV parks provide reliable amenities. "Was a great family friendly environment and pet friendly... Would recommend them without hesitation," states Fred G. about his experience at Sportsman's RV Park & Horse Motel.

Late arrival planning: Some areas accommodate after-hours camping. "I arrived after dark, which wasn't optimal, but it worked out well. I drove past the compost toilet shack on down closer to the boat ramp area and car-camped for the night," explains Glen F. about Neenoshe Reservoir.
