John Martin Reservoir State Park offers basic camping options about 3 miles south of Hasty, Colorado. Located in the eastern plains at 3,800 feet elevation, the area features a semi-arid climate with seasonal temperature extremes. Campsites at Point Campground lack shade trees and natural windbreaks, creating exposed conditions during summer heat and prairie winds.
What to do
Fishing from shore: Access fishing spots directly from Point Campground at John Martin Reservoir State Park, where campers can walk down to the rocky shoreline. "People were walking down to the water to fish from the camp spots," notes Diana H.
Sandy beach exploration: Drive across the dam to find secluded sandy areas along the reservoir. "We drove across the dam and found some awesome sandy spots on the water. Dispersed camping was also available there. We posted up all day and had a blast playing in the water with our dog. Hardly anyone around," shares Diana H.
Stargazing after sunset: Take advantage of minimal artificial lighting for exceptional night sky viewing. "Low light pollution," mentions Tad C., making Point Campground ideal for astronomy enthusiasts or casual stargazers.
What campers like
Privacy and seclusion: The Point Campground offers widely spaced campsites away from crowds. "Closest campsite was about 100 feet away," reports Tad C., providing a sense of solitude even during busier periods.
Budget-friendly rates: Basic camping at Sportsman's RV Park & Horse Motel offers affordable overnight stays for travelers passing through the area. "We were traveling through and needed a place to crash for the night... Was a great family friendly environment and pet friendly," shares Fred G.
Wildlife viewing areas: Designated wildlife observation zones allow for nature watching from your vehicle. "We were able to drive our car into the wildlife area where you could park very close to the water and post up all day," explains Diana H.
What you should know
Limited facilities: Point Campground lacks immediate water access and nearby restrooms. "No water so bring your own or you'll have to go fill up at the lake hasty one. Bathrooms were available but few so you have to walk or drive up to them," advises Diana H.
Insect preparation: Summer months bring heavy insect activity, particularly mosquitoes. "Mosquitos can drain a cow in 15 minutes. Bring Deep Woods Off," warns Tad C. from Point Campground.
Weather considerations: The open prairie location experiences significant wind with no natural barriers. "It is wide open with trees only off in the far distance. If it is windy, which it often is in eastern Colorado, come prepared," cautions Doug W.
Additional fees: State Park fees apply beyond campsite costs. "Overpriced for what's there. $20 for campsite plus $9 fee if you don't hold a Colorado State Park pass, total $29 for no electric or water and pit toilets not near campsites," notes Karl M.
Tips for camping with families
Timing considerations: For comfortable temperatures, avoid mid-summer heat when possible. "The breeze at night kept us cool and didn't get very hot until after 10am," shares Diana H. from Point Campground.
Supply planning: Stock up on essentials before arrival as local options are limited. "We went and got more ice on our second day at the bait shop right outside the park down the school road," mentions Diana H.
Alternative accommodations: Mapes Lakeview RV Campground offers more amenities for families needing additional comforts. "Brandy was very kind to us and we stayed for 1 night passing through. It was nice to be able to shower and get a quiet night to relax and sleep in. Check out is at 12 so that's always nice as well!" reports Monica T.
Tips from RVers
Dump station access: RV campers should note service availability varies between campgrounds. "If you need a dump station there is one in the Hasty campground also in the park. It has 4 lanes but it does not have water of any kind so you do not have the ability to wash your tanks," advises Doug W.
Generator noise consideration: During busy summer weekends, prepare for ambient noise at non-electric sites. "During the summer the sun will be unrelenting. I have no doubt on a hot summer weekend, the sound of generators will be very annoying," warns Doug W.
Reservation requirements: Point Campground requires advance booking through Colorado's reservation system. "This is a by reservation only campground, which I did not know about before arriving as I was traveling and this was not my intended stopping point for the night," cautions Dexter I.
