      Piñon Campground — Lathrop State Park

      Nice place place for overnight

      I got in about 3 and had no trouble getting a site on Monday. I was escaping the wind. Not crowded and plenty of room for big rigs and me.

      Soda Pocket Campground — Sugarite Canyon State Park

      Great Park, good hiking & fishing, cheap and has showers!

      I live in Raton 5 miles from Sugarite State Park and hike there frequently.  The campground is still $10/night a serious bargain, given the sites are spaced out and sheltered by oak trees and brush, creating privacy, and come with bear boxes, and a metal shade structure.  The showers are down by the park entrance, but that's either a 4 mile hike or about the same by road.

      The access road is dirt and the Soda Pocket campground is only open in the warmer months, although there is a second campground open year round off the paved park road.

      The views from Soda Pocket are gorgeous, and there are nearby hikes.  Raton has a grocery store and ample repair and equipment shops for vehicles, a few restaurants and other amenities like a swim center (best for kids, but has showers as well).  

      It's an overlooked gem of a park and campground right on the state line (some of the trails cross over to Colorado, although none connect easily to Trinidad, the nearest town to the north.)

      Chill vibes/Quick stop

      We needed a place to camp our RV for one night, and it was kind of last minute. The people who run the cafe also run the RV park, and you pay inside. I called to ask if they had availability, which they did, and they took my info down. They said if we were there past 6:00pm (which is when the cafe closed), we could just pay the next morning. There was no specific checkout time, but they let me know we would just need to pay for another night if we decided to stay.

      Lathrop State Park

      Accessible and fun!

      This is our second trip to Lathrop. Electric hookups, water fill station near the entrance as well as community spigots and showers at each campground. Hiking trails all around and a playground for the kids!

      Terrible campground

      This campground charged upfront for full 5 day stay. They closed due to fire which is understandable. They are back at park now. They do not return calls or emails. They will not refund. Buyer beware.
