San Isabel National Forest encompasses Cordova Pass, a drive-in campground that requires navigating six miles of dirt road from the Highway of Legends. The route proves manageable for sedans, though campers should expect some rough patches along the way. Views open up during the ascent, revealing mountain vistas that compensate for the bumpy access.

The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with only a handful of sites clustered together in a wooded area. Sites lack privacy and sit close to one another, making this better suited for solo campers or small groups rather than those seeking solitude. Three walk-in tent sites require hauling gear a short distance from the parking area at the trailhead. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, with a pit toilet serving the camping area.

West Spanish Peaks trailhead provides direct access from the campground, drawing hikers who start early in the morning. Amanda N. notes the area is "very clean & quite" with good mountain views. The remote location means minimal traffic once campers settle in for the night.

Fees apply for both camping and day use at this US Forest Service facility. The campground works well for hikers planning an early start on the Spanish Peaks trail system or those seeking a mountain basecamp without full amenities.

Small CG near popular trailhead

This is a set up where you park your car at the trailhead and haul your gear to your site. It’s not far to haul since all the sites are scattered together in the wooded area. Sites aren’t very private or very far apart. Good for a night.

Astonishing views

Had my gear and saw a sign, so decided to drive up the mountain to this campsite from the Highway of Legends. There’s a six mile drive up a dirt road with some great vistas on the way up. It was totally manageable in my sedan.

There are only a handful of sites and they are first-come-first-serve. Only three sites were taken when we arrived and the available sites were still great.

Beautiful views!

We came on a holiday weekend so the main camp area was full. We carried our stuff down the trail a bit and made a temporary site. It was the best ever because we woke up with views and everyone else woke up to busy hikers getting ready at the crack of dawn. Ha! It would still be beautiful over there, don't get me wrong, just trying to keep myself jazzed about making a bunch of trips back to the car.

Quiet Remote Campground

Spent one night on our way to New Mexico. Great campground, very quiet and remote. Road is a little rough getting in and out but vistas were beautiful.
