Hermits Rest Boat-in Campsite

Within Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests, Hermits Rest Boat-in Campsite requires a demanding 3-mile hike descending 1,800 feet into the canyon. This Bureau of Land Management site features eight tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus a vault toilet. The challenging access keeps visitor numbers low, with typically only a few camping parties present at any given time.

The adjacent reservoir provides fishing opportunities for trout, while day hikers occasionally pass through the area. Campers exploring the region can find sites near BLM Land — Gunnison Field Office for additional options. Plan for a strenuous hike with full gear and consider the significant elevation change when preparing for this remote camping experience.

Relaxing and secluded

Since you have to hike 3 miles, decending 1800 feet into the canyon, there weren’t many people at the campsite. A few day hikers passed through, but there was only one couple camping in addition to our group of 4. There were 8 tent sites with picnic tables and fire rings. The vault toilet was clean and convenient. The reservoir was beautiful and we caught and ate two big trout.
