Natural Features

The steep canyon walls in this part of the reservoir were carved out by the Gunnison River, which once flowed with powerful intensity fueled by the snowmelt of nearby mountains. Today, the Gunnison river is dammed in three places, creating three large and beautiful reservoirs to be enjoyed by visitors. The land is characterized by semi-arid shrubland with vast expanses of sagebrush. The natural features and ecosystems of Curecanti vary greatly, with Riparian habitats, epic canyons and lush patches of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and aspen trees.

Nearby Attractions

The recreation area is just south of Gunnison National Forest and east of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. There's no shortage of options for Scenic Drives and Hiking. Try hiking the Curecanti Creek Trail or Hermit's Rest Trail off HWY 92..

Parking lot camping

The view of the lake and surrounding mountains is pretty. But no showers.

Clean restrooms and great views!

Great view of the lake! Basically two glorified parking lots with picnic tables and fire pits, but they had the cleanest restrooms I’ve ever seen at a campground! I’ll be coming back.

Almost perfect Verizon service

Good for a Parking Lot

Lake Fork Campground is three camper parking lots, a walk to tent area and one huge boat ramp. There are clean flush toilets, but the shower building is not open. There are trees only around a rest room and the little amphitheater. The only time we had connectivity on Verizon was in the early hours before dawn. AT&T was good until about noon. Then it was spotty at best, but got a bit better in the later afternoon. The interior pull through sites are just big enough for big rigs. Those on the lake side get quite windy most afternoons. During the week it is quiet except for some low highway noise. However, on the weekends it gets noisy from the influx of campers. It is easy to get here, but U.S. 50 has some tight curves coming from the east. That could be improved in the future. As of June 2022, there was major construction on it. It is close Mon. - Thurs. except for two time slots around lunch and dinner time. If traffic is too heavy, they will require vehicles to go alternate routes: which will add about 50-75 miles to a trip.

Fish persons paradise!

This campground is ideally suited to boaters and RV campers. There are a few walk in sites but most don’t have a pad for tents. The grounds are well maintained and clean. There are pay showers and flush toilets. The views are pretty darn good.
