Fishing, creek swimming, and hiking the Rainbow Trail draw campers to this San Isabel National Forest site along Hayden Creek Road, where the creek runs close enough to several sites that the sound of moving water carries through camp at night. The campground sits within a forested corridor in the Arkansas River Valley, and places to camp near San Isabel National Forest extend well beyond this single location for those planning a longer stay in the region.
Sites include picnic tables, fire rings with grates, and access to a vault toilet. The campground has no host on-site, which reviewers note can lead to a loose atmosphere on busy weekends. First come, first served. Arrive early on Fridays, as sites fill fast. Cell service from AT&T and T-Mobile is absent here, so plan accordingly before leaving the highway.
Navigation deserves attention before the drive out. Using Google Maps rather than Apple Maps is strongly recommended, as Tommy C. notes that "Apple Maps sends you to Cuttys down the street." The access road is dirt and generally manageable, though campers towing pop-up rigs report it requires some care. Several dispersed sites line the road before the established campground, free to use but without tables or grills. Supplies are available in Cotopaxi on Highway 50.
Campers wanting a more developed alternative nearby can look into Coaldale Campground, about 1.2 miles east along the same corridor.
