Poncha Pass Dispersed

Poncha Pass Dispersed follows standard Forest Service dispersed camping regulations, which include a typical 14-day stay limit. Campers must practice Leave No Trace principles, pack out all trash, and properly dispose of human waste. Campfires may be permitted in established fire rings when there are no fire restrictions in place. Camping is allowed only in previously used sites to minimize environmental impact. Poncha Creek dispersed camping is located along Marshall Pass Road in south-central Colorado. The area sits near Poncha Pass, which connects the San Luis Valley and Arkansas River Valley. You can access the camping areas by taking Marshall Pass Road, which eventually continues to O'Haver Lake and can be followed all the way to Sargents. The dispersed sites are scattered along Poncha Creek, which runs alongside the road as you travel through this scenic section of the San Isabel National Forest.

Poncha Pass Dispersed camping offers minimal amenities as it's true backcountry camping with no developed facilities on site. Nearby O'Haver Lake provides fishing opportunities and more established camping options. The town of Poncha Springs, a short drive away, offers basic services including gas stations, restaurants, and supplies. For more extensive amenities, Salida is nearby with grocery stores, outdoor shops, and medical facilities. Bring everything you need for self-sufficient camping, including water, as there are no potable water sources or restroom facilities at the dispersed sites.

The best seasons for camping at Poncha Pass are late spring through early fall (May to October), when the roads are clear of snow and temperatures are most comfortable. Summer brings warm days and cool nights at this elevation. Be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms, particularly in July and August. Fall offers beautiful changing colors but cooler temperatures. Weather can change quickly in the mountains, so pack layers and rain gear regardless of when you visit. Winter camping is possible but challenging due to snow and cold temperatures.
