Within the Kaibab National Forest, Long Jim Loop Campground offers free dispersed camping just one mile from Grand Canyon National Park's south entrance. The US Forest Service maintains this dirt loop road that extends approximately two miles through pine forest before ending at residential buildings where elk frequently roam.
The campground accommodates both RVs and tent campers across an estimated 40-50 dispersed sites of varying sizes. Large motorhomes up to 40 feet can navigate the well-maintained entrance road, though some sections develop significant potholes requiring slow speeds around 5 mph. Bill A. notes the area remains "very quiet even though it's near the main road going to the park." Sites feature fire rings and offer decent separation from neighbors, with some spots providing more privacy than others.
Cell service works well for phone calls, though internet connectivity proves inconsistent. The proximity to town means supplies are available within a mile, though prices run considerably higher than in Flagstaff. Wildlife encounters are common, particularly elk sightings that delight first-time visitors. Most sites receive good sun exposure for solar panels.
Crowding varies significantly by season and day of week. S H. found it "pretty crowded on a wednesday in early May" with rapid fill-up after 4:30 PM, while winter visitors report far fewer campers. The road experiences evening traffic as RVs search for available spots, with some larger rigs having to turn around if they reach the end without finding suitable sites.
For the best site selection during peak season, arrive early in the day and be prepared with backup options among the campgrounds near Grand Canyon.
