FS Road 302 cuts south off SR-64 just outside the town of Tusayan, putting campers within a short drive of the south entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. The terrain is open ponderosa pine forest with red dirt pull-ins scattered along the gravel road. No fees, no reservations, and no formal facilities. Campers who need a restroom have noted that the gas station in Tusayan is close enough for a quick run.
Site conditions vary with season. In late winter and early spring, snowmelt can turn the pull-in areas muddy enough to require four-wheel drive, so vehicles with limited clearance should plan accordingly. Summer and fall visits tend to find the road and sites in better shape. Elk have been spotted in the area. Loops A and B sit directly under the flight path used by sightseeing helicopters returning from the canyon, and the air traffic runs consistently from around 9 a.m. onward. Campers who want more distance from the noise should head further from SR-64 along the road.
Crowd levels are generally low. Multiple visitors report arriving to find only a handful of other campers, with sites spread far enough apart to feel uncrowded. Cell service is available. Campfires and pets are permitted.
