Kaibab National Forest's FS328 corridor puts free dispersed camping within a short drive of the Grand Canyon's south rim entrance, making it a practical staging point for campers who want to avoid the park's paid campgrounds. The road itself is in good shape according to multiple reviewers, and sites with visible fire rings begin appearing after roughly the first half-mile from the forest road entrance. The initial stretch has no camping allowed, and a section of numbered lots follows, so campers should continue past both before pulling off.
Eight or more pullouts line the forested road, none with picnic tables, water, or trash service. Pack-in, pack-out applies strictly here. A paved trail runs alongside the campsites, useful for an early walk or bike ride before heading into the park. Cell coverage is available, with at least one Verizon user confirming two bars. Dennis C. describes it as "just a quiet forested area to camp for the night, or several," which captures the no-frills nature of the spot well.
Wildlife sightings have been reported, including antelope and wild horses near the end of Fire Road 605F, a spur off the main route. RVs up to 25 feet can access the road, though site width is limited in places. Nearby, Kaibab NF Dispersed off Forest Service Road 328 and F328 dispersed camping spot provide additional campgrounds near Kaibab National Forest if this stretch is full. Arrive with a full water supply and expect no facilities of any kind.
