    Must to visit

Set right along the water at the end of Hope Highway, it gives you that peaceful, tucked-away feeling while still offering easy access to trails like Gull Rock and stunning views across Turnagain Arm. The campsites feel nicely spaced, with a semi-private vibe thanks to the surrounding trees. You’ve got the basics covered, fire rings, big picnic tables, and clean pit toilets that people consistently appreciate. Water stations are available too, though they can be a bit hit-or-miss at times, which is pretty typical for more remote Forest Service campgrounds. What really makes this spot stand out is the balance between calm nature and a bit of social energy.     Five Mile Campground

    It Feels Safe

    This camp is unique in the sense that it is just an open, dirt parking lot. But it felt very safe for us (only people tent camping). Also I would guess that this site gets looked over compared to Coldfoot and the Arctic Circle camp, so it was not busy (we were there in August). In total, 4 groups were there. There was 1 private site right above the lot. Below there was a little gift shop and parking area, but I am unsure if that is active or not. Very basic camp, but it was mighty beautiful.

    Galbraith Lake Campground — Dalton Highway

    Beautiful Camping Experience - Outside of Gates of the Arctic NP

    On the way up to Deadhorse, we stopped at Galbraith to tent camp. You have to go passed the airstrip to get to the camp— probably about 3 miles from the turn off from Dalton. There are some great sites, unfortunately only 1 restroom, so if you pick camps 6, 7, 9, or 11 you will be the furthest from the bathroom. As for site 10, if you trek through the foliage, you can make it. Site 12 was the best, personally (easy out, close enough to restroom). We also stayed at site 6 which was pretty decent. Beautiful hiking opportunities. You could fairly easily hike into Gates of the Arctic Natl Park.

    Arctic Circle Campground — Dalton Highway

    We camped at the Arctic Circle?!

    Really, who else can say they’ve done that? But honestly, cool site. About 1/2-3/4 mile up the backroad from the pull-off (where the sign is). When you leave the pull-off, turn right instead of left. There was bear activity unfortunately for at least 2 nights in a row— but what else would you expect? Thank God it did not get to us at site #17, but it attacked the guy staying at site #10 (where we almost set up). The camp is pay-to-stay, but there is no service on the Dalton so we couldnt pay by phone. Food storage available and bathrooms were decent. 5/5 just for the experience of it all. We dont mind dry camping.

    Tanana Valley Campground

    3.5/5 - wouldnt have stayed here if there were other options in Fairbanks

    This was one, if not the only, campsite in Fairbanks that we saw. The park map was confusing and the first site we picked ended up being sketchy. The first site was right along the road inside the camp and a intoxicated man wandered in and sat down in the camp next to us. We spoke to the camp host and we were able to move to a more secluded area, thankfully. He (camp host) was great and friendly. Camp price for a tent was $30 (another reason we didnt want to stay here). Got to do laundry, though, so that was a plus. If you are a woman camping alone, please do not stay in the t40-t45 area of the map. Wanderers from College Road will stay there. We moved to the 35c-38c area and we felt better there.

    Sourdough Creek Campground

    Average Campsite (probably 3.5/5)

    My husband and I were trying so hard to find a camp heading north on hwy 4 all the way from Valdez. The Gulkana River camp ended up not working, so we just kept driving until we found one. Sourdough Creek was fine. Very, very buggy (August), but amenities were average. It was cool to see the midnight sun. We tried to find dispersed camping, so we were sad we had to pay for a campsite.

    Homer Spit Campground

    Almost 5/5!

    First overnight stop on our Alaska trip and it was incredible. The most beautiful place I have ever camped. We camped beachfront with a tent. Amazing views. Only negatives are the cost, paying to shower ($2 I think), and paying for wifi (didnt need it- I think $5?). Close to the touristy things. You can walk where you want to go, but depending how far back up the spit you go it may take a while. We were there on the last day of July; it was chilly, but very manageable. Cant forget the midnight sun!! funny story: my husband and I were setting up the tent and we heard some birds squabbling in the air. We look up and saw an eagle being chased by two seagulls, trying to get the fish in the Eagles mouth. As the seagulls got closer to the eagle, the eagle dropped the fish right on our campsite

    George Parks Hwy Pullover Dispersed

    Probably 3.5/5 - good enough!!

    My husband and I stayed here before heading to Denali the next day. It is just a pull-off from the highway, and if you have the right car you can go up the steep hill to find more spaced-out spots (that is what we did). Mind you— all of the photos are from up on the hill. The maps are accurate and show the pull-off where the RVs and other vehicles were. I can only speak for tent camping up on the hill. The ground was pretty tough to sleep on and I think it popped my camp pad. Uncomfortable mostly, but beautiful scenery and way better than paying for a hotel. Love a free option. Less than 5 miles to town to do the touristy things; less than 15 miles or so to the entrance of the park. Really not a bad spot if you can tough it out.
