Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park Campground

Wow, where to begin. We weren't ready. We had a concert in Birmingham and wanted to camp beforehand. We thought it would be relaxing and fun and we'd have nature time before being in a huge crowd at a concert. Wrong. Very. Very. Wrong. We came a few days before Halloween and we stayed 5 days. Halloween, is apparently, a huge deal at this park. I mean literally thousands of people in the park. Hundreds of decorated camp sites. So. Much. Noise. That lasted for 3 days. On the 4th day, we woke up and almost everyone was gone. But, some mountain bike gang decided to set up a warm up area for their trail, all around our campsite, which was weird bc there were other areas it could have been. After the 3 days of Halloween it was surreal at this point. Our van being circled by mountain bikers warming up..this place is wild. Im writing on the 5th morning, we're leaving today. It's pretty peaceful out, I can actually hear birds. I wish it had been this way for the entire trip. I think if we had known what we were getting into and could have planned to participate in the festivities maybe I would have ranked higher. Also this park seems more geared towards selling campsites, some are ridiculously placed and they try to squeeze in as much as they can. Its for mountain biking, almost all the trails are bike trails. And there's history here which is actually really cool.

      Palomino RV Resort

      Great layover

We stayed at Palomino RV Park as a layover on our trip from Indiana to Destin, and it was an excellent stop. The campground is right off the highway, and from the exit to pulling into our site was literally just a few minutes, which made it incredibly convenient for an overnight stay.

The staff was very friendly, the campground was in pristine condition, and the amenities were great. Our kids especially enjoyed the paddleboards and kayaks on the pond, and our dog loved having a fenced-in dog park to run around in.

Our site had full hookups, a nice concrete pad, and a freestanding fireplace, which made for a very comfortable stay.

If I had one complaint, it would be the $8 bundle of firewood. Compared with other campgrounds we’ve stayed at, the bundle was extremely small. That’s a very minor issue, though, and certainly wouldn’t keep us from coming back.

We would 100% book here again when traveling through Alabama. It’s a convenient, clean, family-friendly campground and an excellent overnight stop.

      Chilton County Minooka Park

      Nice Campground (bathrooms need attention)

Stopped in late for an overnight on our way to Gulf Shores. Nice level concrete sites Seems secluded…for a non dispersed campground. The bathrooms however were terrible. One non -functional One over flowing and clogged One has a line as if you were at a rock concert with only porta johns.

Pretty sad for a $45 fee.

Hopefully they get that figured out and we can make it a regular stop when headed south

      Birmingham South RV Park

      Close to Interstate

Conveniently located right off of Interstate I-65 with lots of pull thrus for an overnight stay. We stayed for a few nights as we had friends in town and wanted to see some of the sites and eat at the great restaurants in town. The campground is about fifteen miles from downtown Birmingham. The park is on the older side but decent enough. Roads are paved and have some potholes to navigate. Campsites are gravel sites and some patios are paved (although very small) and others are grassy. Tiny dog park. There is a covered pavilion with picnic tables that has a sink and campers outdoor kitchen although it looks like it had not been used in a while. Heated swimming pool, game room, and playground. Our park features a newly renovated store and office, a fenced playground, a heated swimming pool, descent wifi. Overall, we like the convenience of this campground to the interstate. If you have time, check out Vulcan Park and the Sloss Furnace National Historic Landmark. Definitely go to the Alabama Peanut Company for the best and most tasty peanuts you’ve ever had.

      Birmingham South RV Park

      Great Stop Over

Nothing fancy here, but exactly what you need for a stopover. The park is peaceful and clearly well run, with full hookups and a nice pool to cool off after a day of driving. It has that classic former-KOA feel to it — clean, simple, and functional.

Don’t be deterred by the industrial area surrounding it — once you’re inside, there are so many mature trees you won’t even notice what’s outside the gates. The whole place stays surprisingly quiet.

Check-in was great — they actually drive you to your site to make sure everything’s hooked up and working before they leave you to settle in. Small touch, but it makes a difference. They also sell ice on site, handy if you’re running low.

If you’re passing through and need a reliable place to land for the night, you can count on this one.

      Birmingham South RV Park

A perfect gem off of I65!

Shady full-hook-up sites and LOTS of activities for kids and kids at heart! Pool, game room with ping pong, foosball, large playground, FIREFLIES! I also appreciate the beautiful gardenia and jasmine blooming around the park. We will definitely stay here again when in the area.

      Great Spot

Owner was very detailed with location and ammenities. He took the time to let us know there will be a late arrival and not be startled. It is private and spacious.

    Guide to Midfield

RV camping near Midfield, Alabama sits at the foothills of the Appalachians, with elevations ranging from 450 to 600 feet above sea level. The region experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters where freezing temperatures are rare. Most campgrounds in the area maintain year-round operations, though autumn brings higher occupancy rates during football season at nearby universities.

    What to do

Outdoor recreation at Smith Lake: At Thousand Trails Hidden Cove, campers access Smith Lake for boating and fishing. "This RV park is right on a lake, but a bit away from anything else. If you have any sort of boat, kayak, paddle board, bring it! There is hiking about an hour away at the Bankhead National Forest," notes one visitor who recommends planning water activities during your stay.

Local entertainment options: RV parks near major roads provide convenient access to regional attractions. "This spot seems to be where the sheriffs like to come and chill," reports one camper at Wind Creek Atmore Casino RV Park, which offers gaming credits with stays. Another camper adds, "Costs $37 a night, and includes free game play at the casino. While they are paved sites, we found that you do have to level out still by around 3 inches."

Kids' activities: Several parks offer child-specific amenities. "Super easy to get in and out. Easy hooks ups and good WiFi available. Playground and rock climbing area a plus," mentions a camper at Hoover Met Complex RV Park, which maintains sports facilities adjacent to camping areas.

    What campers like

Secure environments: Birmingham South RV Park earns praise for its controlled access. "This was a very secure campground with a lot of amenities. No concrete pads but nice small sites," notes one reviewer. The campground features gated entry points at certain hours.

Convenient locations: Multiple parks position themselves strategically for travelers passing through the region. "We used this campground as a stopover on our way to the beach. They put us in a pull though site which was awesome for being easy to make quiet exit. Never unhooked the truck. Campground is close to the grocery store for the last few items before heading south," shares a Birmingham South visitor.

Site spacing: Unlike typical parking-lot style RV parks, some locations offer more natural settings. "There's quite a bit of space between most of the sites (particularly the back in sites)," notes a visitor at Rolling Hills RV Park, adding "We had a pull through spot so we didn't have to disconnect our tow dolly. Gravel site was fairly level despite being in a hilly area."

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Extreme weather affects visitor patterns. "Hurricane Ian sent a multitude of people fleeing from Florida that were now headed to the Hoover Met RV. I called and verified that we still had site reservation for one night. But now the RV park was completely full," explains one camper who witnessed emergency accommodations during a major storm.

Mixed amenity quality: Facilities vary significantly between parks in the region. "The pads are very uneven and there are just not many amenities. Very close to sports fields though," reports a camper at Hoover Met Complex RV Park, giving it 3 stars despite its convenient location.
