Bastrop State Park sits within Texas Parks and Wildlife's network of central Texas parks, carrying visible evidence of the 2011 wildfire that burned through more than 90% of its Loblolly pine forest. The recovery is ongoing and uneven. Some sections retain tall, old-growth pines, while others show open terrain with charred trunks and new understory growth coming up beneath them. Caitlin H. put it plainly: "Lots of charred and dead trees, but some new growth coming up underneath." The result is a campground that looks quite different from one site to the next, and shade varies considerably depending on where you land.
The facilities are a consistent strength. Bathrooms and showers have been updated in recent years, and multiple reviewers single out cleanliness as a standout feature. Full hookups are available, including water, electric (up to 50 amps), and sewer, with sites accommodating RVs up to 60 feet. Some pull-through sites are level and long enough for a truck and trailer with room to spare. The tradeoff on hookup sites is exposure: less tree cover means more sun and, on sites near the park perimeter, audible road noise from Highways 21 and 95. Site-to-site privacy is limited throughout.
Hiking is the main draw beyond the campground itself. Trails range from moderate to steep, with elevation changes and CCC-era structures visible along some routes. The park also has a seasonal swimming pool operated by the local YMCA, a playground with accessibility features, and fishing access. A scenic 11-mile drive connects Bastrop State Park to nearby Buescher State Park, though it's not recommended for towing.
Reservations are strongly advised. The park fills up, particularly on weekends and during spring and fall, which are the most comfortable seasons given the intensity of Texas summer heat. Danielle R. advises: "Bring sun screen and plenty of water." The town of Bastrop is close, with grocery stores and restaurants within a short drive. Campers who want a different setup can check The Pines at Bastrop RV Park to the northeast or browse camping near Bastrop State Park for additional options in the area.
